Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Chuck is correct. The Big Ten rules changed in recent years. Stepan could have received a scholarship from any Big Ten school right away but he would have had to sit out a season without a full release from OSU. No way is a kid going to sit out a year of development at this stage when he can play college hockey elsewhere right away.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Casey Jerry from River Falls made the Cedar Rapids 30-man roster out of their main camp. I don't know if he'll make the final roster when the season starts, but that's a nice accomplishment for an undrafted Wisconsin high school player. I stumbled upon him a couple years ago at a random high school game I was watching and he piqued my interest. I don't know if he'll ever turn out to be anything, but from what I remember he had some really great hands. Never know on a kid like that if they grow as a player in a league like the USHL. Interesting none the less.

On a somewhat related note, the newest Wisconsin recruit Ryan Wagner reportedly had a pretty strong camp for CR. Scott Herbst that posts here a little bit and is a CR fan said he had two goals in the All-Star game last night. From what I know he'll likely be on the team next season.

Adding it up quickly, Wisconsin could have up to ten players getting USHL games next season, with the realistic number being probably seven. Boeser told me he's going back to Burnsville next year, and Grunwald says he's either going to be in the NAHL or USHL (I'd bet NAHL). I don't know on Berkovitz yet, depends on how things shake out at Chicago's camp but I'd assume he'd be back with Team Wisconsin and his HS team.

Dvorak (Chicago), Ford (Dubuque), Kunin (USA U17), Linhart (Green Bay), Malone (Dubuque), Tischke (Chicago) and Wagner (Cedar Rapids) should all be in the USHL.

Yes Wagner looked really good last night. Smaller forward but hits everything in his way. Last night he had one crazy skilled play. Ryan came down the left wing, toe dragged it around a defender and fired a wrister across his body into the top corner. It was by far the best offensive move of camp. As far as Ryan making the roster I do not know. Cedar Rapids potentially returns 12 forwards from last year's team, so spots are limited. Coach Carlson has been known to trade away veterans in the preseason so this could change come September. We shall see. Ryan is good enough to be playing in the USHL next year that is for sure.

so Boeser, Kunin and Wagner are all 5'11" or under, I like this trend...it reminds me of BC recruiting, UW could use these types of guys to balance out against the Mersch/LaBate types and provide different types of offensive threats

For the people who know more than me -

I would have guessed that Junior A is "higher" than the NAHL. Is my perception correct? If so, why would they bother drafting a player from the OJHL? Or does that 21-year-old rule come in to play for NCAA eligibility years? If not, do you think he'll go to Springfield?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

the nahl is junior a. The ushl is tier 1, nahl tier 2, I think tier one has no expenses and tier 2 has to pay for the billet. OJHL has a wide range of teams some very good some not very good at all. Someone else might know if it is better top to bottom than the nahl, I would think they are pretty similar

ecjd answered most of this already, but I can answer the Sprinfield part. Yes, I believe he will play for them next season. When I talked to him last week about being reclassified as a 2014, he said he was not going back to the OJHL, and that he would be in the USHL or NAHL. Given that he'd have to make a team as an undrafted player in the USHL, I'd say it's almost a guarantee he'll be in Springfield.

As for the 21 year old rule, all players born in 1993 (Grunwald is 3/15/93) are eligible to play junior hockey this season. Anyone born in 1992 is too old. Sooo, Grunwald is fine.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Grunwald tried out with Sioux Falls in the USHL and made their all-star game but didn't make their roster. He might go to some other camps, but the tough thing is that he's not a starter in the USHL, and most teams aren't going to use one of their four overage spots on a back-up goalie.

If he is not a starter in the USHL, is he starting material for UW?

Good question. He made some gains statistically last year. I think Sanger is a great goalie coach, he certainly has helped Petersen raise his game. Rumpel is as good as advertised, Sanger should get credit for his improvement as well. I'd be confident Sanger can help Grunwald become a legit D1 goalie, though I hope Eaves lands a blue chippah goalie when Rumpel and Petersen leave to challenge Grunwald and be an insurance policy. You can have a team full of future NHL skaters, but if the goalie isn't Elloittesque, the big trophy will elude them.

Another 2 great articles by Andy. I can't wait to see Cavallini get on the ice. I love the real physical players.

Note: due to my lack of tech skills, not as pretty as Andy's article post above.

Thanks for the kind words. Features on Tim Davison and Aidan Cavallini so far this week. We'll feature Christian Dvorak on Friday.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I feel like a bunch of posts were just deleted from this thread. Am I on crack?

no, you're not. I reported Jdubbs cause I'm sick of his interference (we don't trash the MN threads). so they took down his posts and all responses to it evidently.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Hearing Grunwald tried out in Chicago this past weekend in attempts to make the Steel's roster but failed

He's been to a couple different USHL camps, very difficult to come in as a non-tendered, non-drafted goalie and make a roster out of camp (as a goalie). I'd be stunned if he's not in Springfield in the NAHL.
