Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

"a bit" is an understatement, especially in regards to F's. 2013 has one (Besse) maybe 2 (Soleway) impact F's, and the 2014 has zero. 2015 has 2 - Malone & Dvorack. It would be great if Kunin, Wager and Boeser spend more time developing and come in 2016, I'm not a big fan of rushing these guys to college.

Zulinick will also be a 2014 assuming his redshirt is granted...

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I was starting to wonder if he had another injury that would require a redshirt for this upcoming season that I was unaware of.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I too am confused at what we have up our sleeves for the 2014-15 season. We lose Zengerle, Mersch, Barnes, Dahl, & Little to graduation with Kerdiles and LaBate early flight risk. We lost 4 forward this off season which brings the tally to 9 for sure this and next off season. We currently have Beese, Cavallini, McGuire, Soloway, & Malone lined up as possibilities coming this or next fall. Seems we are short at a minimum 2 if not 3 forwards with no early departures/attrition for next fall. Hope the staff knows something we don't and one or two of that something probably needs to be real high end (Gropp/MacInnis type) as we are losing some high quality guys to graduation. If I hadn't heard there was some ruffled feathers over Stepan leaving, I might hold out hope his cousin might be an option with Oz gone at OSU.

LaBate an early flight risk? I know a guy. I'm not that close to him, though. He had a class with LaBate freshman year. He said LaBate told him he was drafted by Vancouver but wants to stay all four years. With this anecdotal evidence from over a year ago from such a definitive source, how could he be a flight risk? ;)

If we manage to get Kerdiles and McCabe for 2014-15, I'm going to be quite giddy.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

LaBate wouldn't be the first kid to say one thing end do something different (very shortly in the case of Robbie Earl) shortly later. I know you are a bit tongue in cheek....but if Brendan 12 point Woods can leave early...anyone can. I don't think LaBate can do the leave after his junior year and become a UFA by the fall ala Wheeler as he came direct from high school so Vancouver may not pur on too much pressure because of that, but make no mistake...if Labate improves his production marginally the Canucks will be all over him to sign with as shallow as their prospect pool is currently (they are among the worst in the league and are attrocious with LW options and not much better at C).

History tells us, if it ain't Labate, it will be someone leaving the program early as there are seemingly always one or two every year. As we sit now, we don;t have the bodies coming in to cover what we already know will be going out.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I don't know how much it matters now, but back when Labate was drafted in 2011, he did say his goal was to spend three years at UW and then sign a pro contract.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

UW officially announced that Jedd Soleway signed his letter of intent today. Nothing on Cavallini, nothing on Grunwald. Assuming that Cavallini is basically a walk-on, that's not too surprising, but Grunwald not being announced certainly raised an eyebrow...

I was just about to come on here and ask why Grunwald wasn't on there. Could they be delaying him another year?

I honestly don't know. I'm looking into it, will obviously report back when I find out what's up.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

3 Questions on Grunwald -

Being born in March '93, he turns 21 during next season. With that in mind,
  • He is still eligible to play junior hockey next season, correct?
  • I can't find it now (I didn't look too deeply), but I remember reading something from College Hockey Inc. saying that an athlete loses one year of eligibility if he plays a game in Junior A over the age of 21. Can anyone confirm this is or isn't true?
  • Assuming he is brought in next year, can we assume he'll be redshirted?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Grunwald is going back to juniors, coming in fall 2014

This is concerning. What is the reason for this? Is there another potential goalie recruit out there? Hopefully this isn't another Crandall situation.

I think Rumpel and Peterson both play a factor in this. At some point, there just isn't need for 3 goalies when only 2 generally play. Yes, you will always have a third guy on the roster, but that third guy is a walkon/practice type.
