You really like the term "blue chippah", I would say that is a great stretch to call Soleway a blue chip recruit.

Depends on your definition I suppose, but I'd say at this point Soleway is doing a reasonable Brendon Woods impression. I think he's got more offensive upside coming, if he just keeps working. I'm not going to be surprised if Woods (playing @ AHL Charlotte) makes it to the big show at some point in his career and I guess that might make him retroactively a pretty good recruit.

I don't know... I see what you mean, but Soleway has tremendous athleticism and down the road we may be looking back pretty happy.

Any chance Hartzog redshirts this year? Since he's not likely to see the ice this year, but could be a warm body for next year?

Thanks Andy,

Yikes, where are the goals going to come from next year? Seeing it on this chart, we are in deep doo doo next year.

Chuck, thanks for the insight on the 2013 recruits. You are the man.

Correct, I was not taking a shot a Soleway. I was just stating that when he was recruited he was not considered a "blue chippah".

Nor is Besse, for that matter. But they should be very good four year players. Need a lot of those to win games.

IMO, the blue-chip moniker is for kids like Kerdiles, Kyle Turris, Brendan Smith, Ryan McDonagh, etc.

I didn't know enough about Beese, but I knew Soleway was in no way considered a "blue chippah". The way I think of a blue-chip player is if they are considered a high to mid first round draft pick. The term seems to be tossed around a lot.

I look forward to watching Beese grow into a solid goal scorer. On a side note, I am happy to see Barnes finally put away some great goals. He has always been a good stick handler, but has had a hard time putting away the great chances he creates for himself.

The blue chip thing sells magazines and generates headlines, but a lot of times a lesser heralded recruit is more important to a team. It's nice to have a Kyle Turris impact on campus for a year, but what wins you championships is finding those 3-4 year impact guys.

It's a tough balancing act. You recruit these kids at 15 because otherwise you're in a situation like Wisconsin is right now with 5 forward spots to fill at the last minute. At the same time, you don't know that Kyle Turris is going to go from an NHL draft middle round guy to a top 3 player in two and a half seasons. It could have gone the other way and he could have been undrafted like Morgan Zulinick.

Even Minnesota, who seemingly has an unlimited supply of whatever recruits they want given their proximity is bound to make mistakes because you can only do your best to project how a kid will develop.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Of course Pavelski was a seventh rounder... Just sayin'... :p

Edit: Chuck's post snuck in between there. Pavelski is a good example of how things change, or are there are a lot of uncertainties. He ended up a top flight player for his age group by the time he was 20.

Pavelski was not a big time recruit when the Badgers offered him. He was close to committing to Mankato and people I've talked to said Wisconsin only offered him a half scholarship. Not bad production for a kid on 1/2 scholarship eh?

Yes, kind of amazing considering Pavs was only the third freshman in Badger history to lead the team in scoring. The others were Eaves (7th rounder) and Dennis Olmstead (5th rounder).

'Blue chip' is really semantics as it specifically means 'high value' as in a blue poker chip. It's meaning in recruiting I suppose though is a high end, 'can't miss' type of guy, but the reality is, there is no such thing. Pavelski, a 7th rounder, and Robbie Earl, a late sixth rounder, produce 56 and 50 points respectively on a team that really isn't set up to score and win the NCAA's. In 2003, Pavelski's draft year, Ryan Suter is the first American taken at #7 overall, (a genuine Blue Chipper, right?) The second American 'Blue Chipper' taken at #12, (ahead of Dustin Brown and Zach Parise, btw), was Hugh Jessiman. 8 years later he would finally play in his first of two career NHL games and is now playing in Europe.

I grant that the Tony Mandarich's of the world are rare, probably a lot more so than the Abbrederis's are, but you really never know what you have until you have it.

Interesting aside, Jessiman attributes some of his difficulties to leaving college hockey (Dartmouth) a year too early. In many ways Kerdilles seems practically a lock to leave but I'd say he still has some things to improve upon at this level. If the season ended today I think it would be good for him to come back. There's a long way to go and I think he has to show he can dominate in the B1G and down the stretch. If he doesn't improve and meet expectations he could be back. Hopefully he's so awesome that it's a forgone conclusion by April and we have to fill his spot.

I would agree with everything you've said here. Also Turris is another example of a player who was set back in his development by leaving too early.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Yeap...Pavs was not a blue chipper and only sniffed that zip code at the very tail end of his recruitment process. Wisconsin jumped in with a partial scholarship and then in the 11th hour Minnesota threw some kind of offer at him too. Blue chip recruits are kids that have full offers from all the major college powers (UW, Minny, North Dakota, BC, Michigan, ect) and the CHL teams chasing them too.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

To me, Pavelski is the blue print for kind of kid I'd have on the top of my list every year. A character kid with elite athletic skills regardless of how elite his hockey skills are at 16. This kid at Michigan, Andrew Copp -- he was an honorable mention all state football QB in Michigan high school, (holds MI record for most yards passing in a game) then was a 4th liner on the development team. (still pretty good just to be on the team, I grant) He went undrafted in his first year of eligibility but Michigan gets him in and he has a solid freshman year on a semi-struggling team. After a year's work, it's not surprising at all to me this type of kid gets picked up in the 4th round by Winnipeg and is now leading MI in scoring.

Not that these kids grow on trees.

Am I the only one checking back here frequently hoping to see news of a Cameron Hughes commitment?
