Re: Wisconsin-Minnesota Border Battle
Too bad the refs got in the way. They chose to play the entire third period with their whistle in their pocket. Then with 2 minutes left in overtime...they call a penalty that was no worse than a half a dozen others? Call it one way or the other. But don't decide to change it up with major detriment to one side or the other at the last minute. Pretty terrible.
I've got to say, I think the refs did as good of job as can be expected. The OT penalty wasn't worse than some other ones they had let go, but in that situation, with a defender racing back after a breakaway, it's going to get called nearly every time. (The number of people around me calling for a penalty shot on contact that wasn't even from behind almost made my head explode however).
I think Wisconsin won in large part on the goalie battle. ARD made some saves on at least 2 plays I thought were sure Gopher Goals. Leveille had a strong game, but as others mentioned, the rebounds were an issue, and a pretty soft rebound she gave up played a big role in the Badgers second goal.
I was perhaps most surprised on the number of icings by Minnesota, and usually in what seems to be stretch passes to nobody. I don't think I've ever seen so many icings called in a game, especially on cases where the puck started between the blue line and center ice.
The crowd last night was the best I've ever seen at LaBahn. Maybe not the loudest, but the tension was certainly there. Looking for more of the same this afternoon.
I do have 1 extra for today if someone is in need...
