Wisconsin @ Minnesota 12/1 and 12/2 -- Let the Hate flow through you

Re: Wisconsin @ Minnesota 12/1 and 12/2 -- Let the Hate flow through you

Whatever.

We have a ways to go and this won't be the year that we get there.

Gophers don't look much better.

At least it was an up and down game though.

Yeah, not a lot of good hockey out there. Lot's of energy, and lots of up and down, kinda fun, but neither team played great games. Of course there were a lot of whistles and that tends to suck the flow out.

The Gophers had some nice dangerous passing plays but it wasn't a very good game all around honestly. Two of the Gopher goals were either just bad goaltending, the first Hayton was off his angle and the 4th goal was an unscreened shot from the point. I wouldn't say Schierhorn was great either by any means, he was at least serviceable though. And yeah, Berry should definitely be starting tomorrow, no question.

I can't say I was overly impressed at how the Gophers played though, the first ten minutes of the game were a drag and they ended up getting out attempted at EV strength 50-43, shots on net 27-18. I wouldn't be surprised if the Badgers had more even strength scoring chances or all strengths for that matter. Part of this might've been the crazy line combinations, Don really switched things up and had the 4th line C playing 2nd line wing, Reedy played his first game at center, and then I think they might've switched this up midway through.

Gophers were fortunate to come out with a W, could have gone either way. Wisconsin had some good looks, both teams had two pipes. Don was switching up lines during the game lookin' for chemistry.

Some positive takeaways for me were the 4/5 Gs were 5x5, of which they had zero last weekend; and they came off the walls and executed much better plays as 4/5 Gs were very nice tips.

Schierhorn has been avg. since the Mich. series. If you compare his GAA before and after that series, it's almost a 2 Gs/game differential. He doesn't seem to be anticipating shot locations as much as he did a few weeks ago. That's an intuitive skill you can't teach, gotta be in the zone.

A negative was the sudden stack of penalties. If you give any NCAA D1 team not only one, but two 5x3s, bad things happen. Once again, they need to learn to protect a lead and close teams out. They need a W tonight if they expect to catch ND.

You're right, the penalties are an issue for sure and probably correctable but it remains to be seen.

From the looks on Don's face whenever a penalty was called, I don't think we'll see a repeat tonight. Clymer made the prediction Mittelstadt would be scoring multiple times this series. That would great, but I don't see it unless he shoots the puck more. He's got very good full ice vision and creative passing skills to Pitlick, but he tends to pass at times when he should look for holes.

To be fair the pass he made on the primary assist he had was just as good as scoring a goal. Also recall he hit a crossbar off a one timer and was inches away from scoring a goal.

Indeed, his passing skills are exceptional. But If you look at his shot totals over the past 6-8 games, he avgs. about 2+ SOG and he's wide a lot. The pipe was an open net on the strong side...gotta bury those.

Re: Wisconsin @ Minnesota 12/1 and 12/2 -- Let the Hate flow through you

That's true, though the team as a whole needs to get more shots just generally speaking, it's not just a CM issue, this team last I checked has been playing relatively low event hockey all year.

IDK if it's coaching or the loss of Collins/Bischoff and more likely a combination of the two but this has definitely been a team where the process doesn't really align with the results so far. They have a ton of offensive firepower and you see it when they actually control the puck but those moments are just fewer and further between than years past.
