Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

What do you know, the Cap Times actually has a reporter covering the attendance issues.

It's very sad to see the massive drop off of student season ticket sales as well. 3,700 on Friday night. Good god.

Barry is most definitely reaping what he was sowing.

Todd is a great reporter so if he is writing for Cap Times again, that is a great thing.

3,700 actual butts in the seats Friday. wow, just wow.

It's a shame that we are approaching these levels, now we're just like the rest. Big recruiting advantage lost by not being able to say you'll get to play in front of 15,000 fans in a rockin house. You can't tell me a high school kid didn't used to be jacked up on a recruiting trip when the house was packed, now it's almost embarrassing.

I'd have been back at games in a second if they'd have hired a new coach. We're all diehard fans on here that would love to throw our support behind a new coaching staff. Just a huge mistake bringing Eaves back.

Anyone else scared as hell that we go close to .500 this year and they give Eaves a contract extension? I have night sweats about this.

I'm absolutely frightened at the prospect Alvarez would extend Eaves' contract. I'm mortified in fact.

3,700 in the stands I hope actually computes with blockhead Barry.

As to your point on recruits you bet your *** in years past kids would come in and be swayed by the atmosphere and history. Ask Tony Granato, or read about his story in Shot And A Goal by Bill Brophy and Julie Kluge.

Now? I can't imagine what high-end kid would A. Want to play for Eaves and B. Play boring hockey in front of no-one

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I'll preface this comment by saying that I'm pretty certain this did not have a significant impact on the total tickets scanned...
...but a bunch of students were let in when one of the ticket-taker's scanner wasn't working. :) But as I said at about 6:10 that evening: attendance will be garbage anyway, so their "actual attendance" may as well be slightly under-reported, for the sake of a wakeup call.

I want to echo this. Even with a great school in a great city, the crowds were one of the most valuable recruiting tools at Wisconsin's disposal.

I think the student totals on that graph are doubled, as they are full-season. Even in 2011, when the second level wrapped around to 210, the capacity wasn't near what's on the graph.

Edit: If you use the drop-down menus to select specific subsections of the ticket sales numbers, they appear to be correct. I felt a bit of gut-wrenching sadness when looking at that today.

Just bought my Wisconsin-Syracuse bouncyball tickets for the Dec 2nd ACC-Big 10 challenge game! Splurged for better tickets. Wife got her master's at SU (got "early sale" alum tickets!). Son is a junior at SU. (I got my PhD at UW back when hockey was King. We had Sat season tickets at the Dane. I cried a bit when I saw the photos taken at this weekend's games)

Horrifically lower than I had though it would be. It's downright embarrassing. I hope they don't have any campus visits of recruits planned until the B6 season kicks in.

Overall I am shocked at how many people eat their tickets across all the sports. Must have a lot of disposable income in Dane County.

Elsewhere a pair of former Badgers will face off this weekend from behind the bench.

Head Coach Greg Poss (UW '89) and the Florida Everblades will host Head Coach Andy Brandt (UW '07) and the Atlanta Gladiators (formerly Gwinnett) in the first pair of 10 scheduled ECHL games on the season. UW's Brad Navin should skate for the Gladiators, as will Brandt's fellow Wausau, WI native, Nate Condon. I imagine Brandt really has his hands full trying to rehabilitate Condon as Nate attempts to recover from 4 years of being a gopher.

I work 5 minutes from the Atlanta Gladiators rink. I'll have to try and make a few more games this year (only made it to one last year.) My kids would love to see a former Wisconsin player on the ice.

5 Minutes? From my recollection of Atlanta traffic, that must be like across the street!

I wish Navin the very best of luck, but I do admit I'm not sure how I'd take it if he put up 50 points this year... But yes, see a real life Badger, and point and laugh at a gopher. Great fun for the whole family!

The Gwinnett arena is about 30 minutes north east of Atlanta. I would hate to live anywhere near downtown, ugh.

Gopher/Badger stuff is always a challenge for me. My kids get Gopher stuff from my in-laws, so I have to tolerate seeing a Goldy pillow pet in their room right next to Bucky.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Brian Posick's daughter Maddie commits to play for UW Women's hockey and Mark Johnson. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy than Mr. Posick. Class act every time I have met him.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I highly doubt that $13 brat, soda & bag of chips combo is enticing many families to come to the games. You can get better deals at Brewers, Bucks or Packers games.

you are right and I addressed this in my season ending survey the last two years.

$4.50 for a bottle of water. I can get a 36 bottles at kwik trip for that price.

No doubt. You are much better off buying the family 4 pack deal since it comes with a ticket, hotdog, and soda for $16 per person.

Hmmm... I do believe I have some vague connections in Atlanta of somewhat questionable character. Give the word and I'm pretty sure that Goldy pillow might one day just up and decide to take a dive in the Chattahoochee.

Permanent-like.

If you know what I mean...

That'll be a fun threat to dish out to my daughter if she misbehaves. Clean your room or else Goldy will have an unfortunate.... accident...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Can't say that I'm a fan of the website changes. Giant pictures that take up 80% of the screen where you can't see the "next image" for the next story until you scroll down make it pretty annoying to navigate. Sadly, I'm becoming a crotchety old man that longs for the days when sites like the one below were the peak of internet development.
