Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Where would you rank him in all your current commits? Like did you lose a top three recruit or meh

Not really a surprise there, is it. Figured it would be coming at some point.

He only committed back in Febuary, it wasn't like UW wasn't already struggling at that time. I guess the turn around wasn't fast enough for him. Regardless, not a good thing for the program to lose yet another recruit. More evidence that Eaves isn't going to be able to fix the program.

At this point probably not top 3 but definitely not "meh". He's a year and a half out and has played 27 games of juniors (BCHL) as a 17 year old. Has 18 pts., which isn't bad at all. It's not like losing Schmaltz after Osiecki left... On the other hand if you figure the Badgers could have perhaps landed Fabbro and this kid... well... perhaps it will turn out exactly like the Schmaltz's.

I assumed he would be at high risk because Shuchuk recruited him.

And UW doesn't have anyone with those kinds of Western Canada connections at this point.

Rockwood is out this weekend, an upper body injury. Ford was on the 2nd line per Baggot. Interesting to go from not playing to the 2nd line, I guess he didn't want to mess with the chemistry on the 3rd and 4th lines.

Was surprised to see Ford out before as I thought he had been doing some good things. I don't know if there was some other reason he didn't play?

Normally I'd be very depressed at Rocky being out, but in this case it's at least a probable upgrade in the D-zone based on the DU series. Michigan has scored 5 or more in 7 of 12 games so far. Making it 8 games is obviously going to be trouble for Bucky. Ford is fast and fundamentally sound, so I don't so much mind him being in the line up. Puts extra pressure on the first and third to produce some offense though, as well as we will be missing Rocky on the PP. Seamus is just going to have to make some plays on that second line, or get some contributions from the blue liners.

I don't even know who'll be in on the 4th, but I like Freytag and Wagner together so I'm glad Eaves didn't split them up.

Should be a good series in Ann Arbor this weekend. Hopefully Kunin can net a few on his "homecoming". Hoping for a win this weekend but a tie and probably a loss is the most likely.

Why the heck is the game on Comcast this weekend. Doesn't Michigan know that the good residents of Wisconsin don't have that option???

Hmm... I didn't see this last year. Maybe winning won't put fans in the seats again. B1G conference champs actual attendance last year wasn't so good either...

I would be fascinated to see how the transition in conferences has impacted attendance at all of the schools that currently had programs previously. Then correlate those numbers against the programs from the old WCHA and CCHA. That would be a fascinating study to determine if, in fact, college hockey attendance numbers across the board are down or if the re-alignment had an impact on interest/attendance for the D1 schools.

Last year I charted attendance since '02 for UW, MI, BU, DU, UNH, MI ST, MSU, St Cloud, U MASS, UNO, and Maine. All of which have had north of 5k averages in the recent past. Pretty much all peaked between '06 and '10 and all were in fairly steep decline from '10-'14. Which jives (obviously it would) with overall attendance decline across the board since '10. I'd repost, but if I recall correctly, I was called several rather creative names at the time for pointing it out, so I think I'll pass. UND is almost the only place in hockey that was flat at near capacity. There very well could be an additional drop off in there since realignment though. It seems somewhat likely, but it's hard to say exactly what you can attribute it to.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Geezus, what a period! 4-4 after 2.

Bring back the trap. My heart can't take this firewagon hockey.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

They can't close yet, but scoring 4 goals is a good sign.

It is, but it probably should have been 7 or 8 with the number of prime chances the Badgers had. Haven't seen that many great looks in any three games all year.

There is talent on this team, it boils down to the winning the mental game. We are not mentally tough enough which can partly be attributed to inexperience, and partly to leadership on the ice. I hate saying it but if I had to pick the guy that made the most mistakes last night, I may very well be picking Captain Eddie. Perhaps it's a little unfair as he logs a ton of ice time, so he has a lot more opportunity to mess up, but he's made a number of very questionable plays in back to back games now. Loss isn't his fault by any means, but honestly Eddie and K.Schulze cannot just continue to be minus players and still be leaders. Contrast the performance with Compher, who when down 4-2 went out and made plays and helped lead his guys back. Eddie is probably not going to score much but he certainly can quit turning the puck over and get in the right positions and make plays and lead. He can't turn into Chase Drake now.

I thought Linhart had maybe his best game as a Badger. Tischke, Malone, Johnson, all showed they belong. Seamus especially impressed. Turns out Ford, while playing pretty well with 2a, got beat off the wall in exactly the same way Rocky did twice at DU, so my improved D thoughts were a off the mark.

Just be better tonight Badgers. A split would be a huge boost. Just play the right way all night and get it done. Go Red.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I'm already ****ing sick of blowing leads and losing. You shouldn't lose this often with 1, 2, or 3 goal leads in a game. ESPECIALLY if you have them in the third period.

Have you ever watched a Mike Eaves team play in the 3rd? Get a lead, turtle, and hope to hang on.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Hughes -2
Wittchow -2
Kunin -3
Besse -2
Soleway -2

6 goals is great but our transition defense sucks (see: Wittchow on goal against #5).

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

You guys can ***** all you want. IMO that was a hell of a hockey game to watch.

I listened in for a bit and it sounded fun (or at least the bits in the 2nd period did) but,...where are the wins?

This is WISCONSIN Hockey, one losing season is more than enough for about a decade or more, they need to start winning, period. I don't care what Eaves or Alvarez says about this team or the staff. win and win now.

In better news, the women's teams swept the rats and are now 18-0. Congrats!
