Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

To "retire" from the boards is a thing, though, especially for long-time members....just sayin'. And no announcement, either.

It bums me out a bit but you're right, I miss quite a few of the old forum members who've decided to stop posting here...and holy crap I just read your sig again, Old Pio died???? GD that sucks:(

Yeah, we just recently found out. Not that I was friendly with him on here, but you know...he made it interesting. ;)

Guess he passed back in May.

Dean Anderson was the first UW goalie I followed closely and became enamored with. I remember UW being in the Great Lakes tourney for the first time in years with him in goal and they won it. Back then I was a So. in HS and had just found UW hockey on grandma's old 13" black and white tv with the rabbit years....wow was I jacked to get a tv in my bedroom. That was a fun time, a carefree highschooler....never dreamed that things would get to where they are now.

USCHO Posters.....old posters never die, they just fade away.....

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I'm calling BS. It may not be much of a chance, but it is absolutely greater than zero.

I fully acknowledge the probability of any given event is unlikely to be zero. Badgerice puts it at even money. Name your odds. The book is open and I'm taking all bets. If Kunin plays to his ability his draft status will be fine regardless of the team's record. If he doesn't, there are so few scenarios in which bailing out on his team mid way through will positively impact his status that I would deem them negligible. Kunin had 12 and 13 total shot attempts against NMU, he had 3 and 2 attempts against BC/BU. That's not all on his teammates, (Soleway got shots off, for example) he has to play at this level too.

I was a student then. There's zero chance this year's team is going to win 25 games. (Sorry, I mean nearly zero.) But let's not write them off totally for the season. Those 84-85 guys started out 3-7 getting swept by BU(10-7), NMU(17-7), and UMD(10-3), around an overtime split with Providence and sweeping a terrible Lowell who were in their first year of D-1. They were 10-10 after getting swept by BC (11-4) in Madison in January. These young guys may not win a lot, but it's a long season yet.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Barry will never get fired by the Board of Trustees, he makes the University too much money including the new deal with Under Armour. He'll play out his contract with the University and leave his mark on his legacy with hiring a new BB coach. With Kunin leaving I would put it at 50-50 he'll be gone for second semester. Wants to be a first round pick and if the team is sucking, he'll bolt to better his draft status.

BA getting fired.....agree 100%
Kunin gone at break.....disagree 100%, which makes the odds -50%, right? (I'm not a math guy).

Apparently the 2nd goal Miller have up was a bouncing 70 footer....yikes. Strand thinks Jurusik staked a claim to the starting job, which says volumes on the Grunwald whiff. Strand also used a nice metaphor....."That's either personnel-wise, putting the right people in the right seats on the bus," Strand said. "The bus it what it is. You've got to get the guys in the right seat."

Ferris State will be an interesting series, then ASU after that. Ferris is more in UW's league than the Baustin teams, then fledgling ASU come into the KC. I can see UW being 3-2-2 before the Sue come to town.

Wisconsin Hockey: We have a better record than the rodents

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Let's assume the seat gets too hot and Eaves is let go... what are the prospective favorites to replace him? I just realized Gwozdecky is a Wisconsin alum. Is he an option or is he too old?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Kunin's OHL team that owns his rights is doing quite well (Sarnia).

This is his draft year, if things get real bad I wonder if he bolts at the break. He is good friend's with Tkachuks kid who plays in.....you guessed it the OHL (London) and is doing very well.

Eaves will be nervous over Christmas break to see who actually comes back of the few players on this team that have other options.

2 players before the season already bolted for what they felt were better options.

I guarantee Kunin will bolt...who wouldn't?

Because the team will be playing better, he values the coaches, he's having fun in college and he wants to be true to his commitment, he knows Turris and Kerdiles left early and wandered/are wandering in the minors when they could have developed and got an education at the same time. He may be around 2-3 years, he's a really young guy.

I don't think the guys (players and coaches) inside the walls look at their team as a dumpster fire. We're only 4 games in. The first 2 games they played their way into 2 ties from behind, that is a good sign. Last weekend they were over-matched, but we knew that going in.

With due respect, Tim, has HE told you this? Times have changed; kids have changed. The CHL will use great pressure to get him to sign. Recent UW history including win/loss record, loss of commits, loss of recruits, etc, will come into play. 5 years ago he may have stayed, but I'm not confident he'll be around. In addition, Sarnia is Major Junior, not an NHL or AHL team, which Kerdiles and Turris signed with.....huge difference.

Plus: In the CHL, you don't have to wear a bird cage over you face! ;)

Of course he hasn't, but from what I've read he's a standup young fella, kinda reminds of an older-school type of guy. It's just unprecedented for someone to leave early to not tarnish their draft status. They leave early for all sorts of reasons as we've all seen, but that would be a new one. I'm trying SO hard to remain on a positive plane (it's not easy), and most of my compatriots are just trying to drag me down. :) :(

We are better than the rodents record-wise, that is an awesome thing! Take pleasure in their pain. We have a little talent and suck, they have a lot of talent and suck. It's better to suck w/o talent than suck with talent. Maybe the tDon for Eaves trade will happen after all.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Very few players leave mid-season. In my experience some type of negative team chemistry is a major factor: they don't want bail on their teammates. The wildcard with Kunin is his draft status. If he is struggling and not putting up the numbers he feels he needs to that could push him provided the improved numbers in the OHL would overcome the hit from the perception of selfishness and not being mature enough to handle adversity of a struggling situation.

I suspect that it's unlikely that Kunin leaves mid-season, the damage to his draft status will have already occurred and I'm not sure even half a season in the OHL will change that.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

You know...I totally understand why guys want to elevate their draft status, but at the same time...does it matter for anything other than pride? These guys all end up in the same development camps, and once they go pro, the same training camps. They end up on equal footing with players who were drafted above and below them.

I don't know who Alvarez would consider really. He's shown no effort or consideration to the hockey team. That's underscored by the quote in my sig which he ACTUALLY made to a reporter during the 2010 Frozen Four run IIRC.

If you ask us fans: Don Granato, Tony Granato, George Gwozdecky (though he'd be a 4-5 year guy), Mark Osiecki, and potentially 2-3 darkhorses...Chris Tok? Mark Strobel? I just don't know who is out there anymore.

Maybe they should go outside the box and chase another Minnesota guy. Worked out well w/Badger Bob:)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Holy ****, memories indeed! Vic Posa was one of my favorites back then; I think he was partnered with Gary Suter if memory serves? He was built like a fire hydrant, tough bastard.

yeah, this was the first year I started to go to games with my Dad. I recall Granato, Mellanby, Maley, Wiitala and Ranheim but surprisingly I don't recall Suter...Although at 12 years old I was distracted constantly by the band, and well...girls

I don't think they have to pick an alumni as HC, I think it's more important to pick someone with a track record of winning as a HC at the college or junior (USHL preferably) level.

I agree, though it appears Don G has what I takes not to mention the Granato name could help lure back some fans who've written the AD and team off
