Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

So did anyone notice the item in the paper stating that the programs will no longer be produced? Apparently there will only be some kind of electronic program accessible on a smart phone or tablet. Kinda sad. The programs were the reason Johnson didn't put the players names on their jerseys. Back then they were produced by the Blue Line Club, and the profits went to support youth hockey in the state. So no names on the jerseys, more bucks to develop the sport statewide. Smart man.

To clarify on this a little bit...

The large program, with 40-70 pages, will no longer be produced. There will be a free app with a free weekly download to give you all of the information that would have been contained in the program (interviews, player profiles, pregame analysis). To help offset this, there will be a information tri-fold available for a small amount (I think $2) that will still have all of the player names/numbers/statistics and some relevant gameday information.

I believe that the plan is to initially offer these at concession stands, but that may transition into stand-alone sale points based on demand. This will likely be sorted out curing the first few football games and should be solidly in place by the time home hockey games roll around.

I agree it's sad. I for one still enjoy reading printed media like magazines, newspapers and the like. It's cool to grab an old program off the archives shelf and look through it.

For those with Time Warner Cable, the 1990 NCAA Championship game will be shown on Tuesday the 26th at 7:00 pm. It will be on the Time Warner Cable Sports Channel, 32 or 1332 in the Green Bay/Fox Cities area.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

It's not close to a full roster yet.

Now that I counted it...yup. I think they're just adding the names as they put out those "Introducing..." articles.

Wow, the revenue section has some interesting information. The most shocking is revenue has gone down substantially since 2012-13 with a prediction to go down again this year from 133 million in 2012-13 to 99 million predicted this year. That's a 25% reduction in 2 years.

Concessions was down in 2013-14 from a budget of 7 million to actual proceeds of 4.6 million. Actual sales of concessions went down by 2 million (2012-13 to 2013 -14) from W club / Coke to national firm and RC. That is over a 30% decline in revenue in one year. Maybe they shouldn't have bailed on the W club as that seemed to backfire on them.

On the other hand, they lost $5,844 in 2012-13 and gained $272,740 in 2013-14 according to that chart.

I don't understand why there would be such surprise about any of these trends. Here is attendance the last 5 years...09/10 316,014 (15048/game), 10/11 290,970 (13226/game), 11/12 235,458 (11773/game), 12/13 199,942 (9521/game), 13/14 209,570 (10478/game). You can't lose 2-3000 people per game and not feel that in your bottom line when you are selling that many fewer tickets, hot dogs, popcorns, pops, ect.

they must be seeing erosion in all sports and less concession sales across the board. I guess based on the ads for football ticket sales going on right now that makes sense. I just didn't realize it was this bad. It also looks like they had some huge donations in 2012-13 that are above normal that they don't have this year and next. I read that in an madison.com article I found online.

Watching the 1990 championship, I had forgotten that Badger Bob was the color guy for the broadcast.

That 2009-10 figure includes the game at Camp Randall. That's not to say that it doesn't count, but it shouldn't be compared to years that don't have such an event.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!

Any thoughts on Wisconsin going to Ferris State next season? I certainly lifted an eyebrow with that news. Not only is it an interesting location, but it means Wisconsin can only play 18 home games again next year. They are scheduled to go to Boston for a series as well as North Dakota on top of the Ferris news. Six non-con road games plus 10 Big Ten road games only leaves 18 home games.

Eaves mentioned earlier this summer (to the WSJ) when they had the opening in the schedule he wanted a road series because of the bonus PWR points. We could be seeing a shift in philosphy on how Wisconsin schedules games now. Interesting move giving up a home series ($). I would have liked to be in the meeting with the coaching staff trying to get that approved with the AD's.

That is the same as this year, other than having to pay full price for the Saturday series for the US under 18 team exhibition.

My 2 cents is that I guess I would rather see them play some tough non-conference opponents on a home and home series like Ferris, than pay to see some of the super low end teams at the Kohl center. Make the 9 home series the 5 big ten teams and 4 quality non conference opponents.

I am shocked UW would give up a home series, but I guess in the big picture of revenue, 1 hockey game worth of revenue is a very small % of the overall revenue stream. I like the fact UW seems more willing to do 1 for 1 deals, hopefully it will open the door for other opponents like MT, UMD and CC, old time wcha rivals. As far as scheduling to benefit the PWR goes, as long as they win, it doesn't matter who they play. And being in the B6 it's easier now to win the conference tourney and get the autobid.

They already have a deal with CC (and Denver).
