Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXIX: Yes, this is the Rumpel Rink!
Boy I hope you guys are right. I just don't have the confidence with this team. I hope they prove me wrong...
I think it's possible, but it's all a question of character and mental toughness. This team is very capable of getting up for big opponents, so I do feel they will play well in the B1G tournament, where a win or two may be the key to getting a top seed. The next six are the problem. They are all low in the rankings and harder to get up for, but there's no room for error as we can't make up ground until the B1G tournament. If no one's RPI were to change (obviously, that won't happen) I believe WI would need all six to get to #4. (Plus maybe a tourney win to stay there. Sadly, sweeping OSU would have had us there now.)
Going to the NCAA's a #1 seed is a huge advantage, but the question is, can the Badger player leadership make the mental connection between winning on Friday with winning a NC? Seems easy enough, but in practice it just isn't very easy. Plus MI ST has lost only 1 of their last six, and a tie could be almost counted a virtual loss for the Badgers. They play extremely tough defensively and every game is likely to be a huge grind.
There are signs they certainly can be prepared... Zengerle played very well this weekend, Mersch had limited success but was a beast... Barnes was coming on... Schulze is really turning into a shut down D-man. But the turnovers and poor decisions creep in... Kerdiles didn't play particularly well either game last week and McCabe has been a slow starter on Fridays, albeit a strong finisher. All the guys need to adopt Matt Paape's attitude every game. Here's a young man who has played a lot of games coming into his Senior season and rather taking the easy road and being disappointed at his lack of PT, when he's been called on, he's answered the bell with everything he's got. Might not be the most talented player, but the guy has really demonstrated his mental toughness in being ready and putting the team first. If that can become even more contagious, Badgers can do a lot of damage.
Of course losses won't mean the sky is falling. Badgers are getting close to locking a tourney berth. And really that's all it takes to have a chance. But the most realistic road all starts with rising to the mental challenge and getting a 60 minute win on Friday.
