Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

First season (in the modern era) without a weekend sweep.

They can get an unconventional "sweep" next weekend...that would be more than pretty cool. I'm telling you there's a chance! I want to play either the rodents or the wolvies in the first game.

Curious that some D did the shootout before some of the F, but the staff knows who has the goods based on practice. It's kind of a sad commentary though that some of the D's are better than some of the F's in a shootout. It wasn't like Brendan Smith and Jake McCabe talent was out there shooting.

Petersen played very well. Too bad they got outmuscled on that first goal, but it wasn't a shock to see that happen. That D on that side was totally overmatched (I don't want to throw him under the bus). Awesome to see Navin pop a couple on Sr. night and have LaBate get some A's.

Shootout skills can be a strange thing. Sometimes the guys who are quite proficient are the guys you'd least expect.

This is what Friday night crowds have looked like since the Christmas break. We estimated it at less than 5,000 people.

Maybe I'm bad at estimating numbers, but I find that very hard to believe. Even if there were literally zero people in the upper deck, that would mean the 100 and 200 levels would have to have been much emptier, thinking in terms of percentages.

You are correct. Believe it or not, it was Dougherty beating out Cavallini in the team's practice shootout this week.

Guys like Matt Hendricks fit that mold and are fun to find.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Does anybody know how many people the lower bowl holds? If all of the 2nd level people and the 3rd level people (there were very few in the 3rd level) had moved down to the lower bowl, there would still have been quite a few empty seats in the lower bowl.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Given the fact the shootout didn't matter at all I couldn't believe all the seniors weren't given a chance.

From UW
The Kohl Center seats 17,230 for men's basketball, which includes courtside seating, and 17,142 for women's basketball. These figures include approximately 7,500 seats in the lower seating bowl and 4,500 in each of the two balconies.
So less than 7500 for hockey, of course.

Shoulda sent Rumpel out!

How was this not a penalty? Wasn't it shoulder right to the head?

Is it because Cavallini didn't roll around on the ice afterwards?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Do you have to play the goalie who played the game, or can you substitute? Not that I would have supported putting in Rumpel.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Anybody know what's up with Besse? I thought he was expected to play last night.

You can switch goalies. To clarify my previous remark, I meant they should have sent Rumpel out to shoot.

Petey was very solid in goal all night. Giant save on that late breakaway too. Wish he was a Junior this year, but that's the haps.

Also I don't know Besse's status but it wouldn't surprise me if they'd err on the side of caution with him for this weekend anyway as the games don't matter and next week's do.

Love that video.

We made an effort to imagine, "Take that group in the second level and put them in that block of empty first level seats, now take that group and put them in those empty seats, ...". Our section in 221 was well under 50% and that was a well populated 2nd level section. Estimating crowds is hard, so we certainly could be off, but I'd be surprised if attendance exceeded 5,000.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

From what I understand the coaching staff creates a shootout lineup befote the game starts and they stick to it. I could be wrong with that though. If the points mattered in the shootout and I were Eaves I would have strongly considered putting Rumpel in for the shootout. But that may just be me.
