Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Stated attendance wasn't great, either, it looks like.

Was the biggest Friday crowd of the year (probably at least 1,000 over Friday average) and had very little chance of any significant walk-up as someone else state because of the weather. It's Big Ten games from here on in so it'll be interesting to see what the numbers will end up at.

Does anyone know what portion of tickets are typically bought at the ticket office on game nights as opposed to those purchased in advance?

UW's breakout was stymied in the first period, then they made some adjustments and those seemed to work, though it was worrisome at the time. UW was excellent in the D zone and played with a lot of poise. The Dahl line was awesome, Zengerlee's was decent, LaBates eh. He seems too slow to the puck on the forecheck. Meuer's line was good, though Pappe had a couple times where he tried to get too fancy with the puck and just should have shot the puck. Cavallini had a nice centering pass from the corner, showed good vision there. There was a few times where some guys didn't seem to be going 100%, the effort/intensity still needs ramping up.

Overall a unique game scoring-wise. I've never seen so many goals by a team in a single game that were not stick to net (3), it seems like all UW's puck luck got used up in this game. Will there be any left for the rest of the season? I also don't recall ever seeing a goal scored after the pulled goalie went back in after the eng. And 5 goals from all 1 line.

I muted the tv and listened to PB & Howie. What a treat. The radio was only a second ahead of the tv, so that was ok. Howie very astutely pointed out some things, PB was right on, Posick occasionally pointed some things out. They had periods where they were off point as far as play by play, but that was to be expected. I need to remember to email Posick and tell him thanks.

I know I keep refreshing to see when you are going to make the next Baghdad Bob reference.

Bob only shows up when things are going bad to tell us that everything is just fine. :p

LaBate seems too slow on the forecheck? To like, a loose puck in the corner, or chasing a defender? I actually noticed him in a positive way a few times attacking the zone with the puck on his net with speed that I was going to note as a positive for him. Seemed to have a little more aggressiveness to his game entering the zone with the puck and I thought it put Michigan back on its heels.

Too slow in regards to getting on the D to force a turnover once the D gets possession.

UW scored on Minnesota on an empty net then on the goalie about 30 seconds later IIRC when they came back from a 4-0 deficit and won 7-4 back in around 95 or 96 IIRC. Joe Bianchi and Shawn Carter were on the team...I was at the game and raced home to tape the tape delay broadcast:) I've always meant to transfer to dvd but have been to lazy to do so

PB and Howie were a treat. Howie as always was insightful and pulled no punches when he said the team still has a lot of work to do

Expecting a big crowd tonight. Only scattered single tickets left in the 100 and 200 levels right now at last check. Hopefully people with the tickets show up.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Well, that was better than last Friday! The weather really was pretty bad... we didn't actually have too much trouble driving with appropriate caution, but morons always cause accidents, and then walking from parking to the game really was hazardous.

Glad to hear we should have a good crowd tonight. We always go, of course, but the atmosphere is better with a bigger crowd and we haven't had a whole lot of that this year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Looks like Eaves got a message across during practice this week. Here's hoping for a good follow up performance tonight.

Either Eaves or the players themselves, either way it was a good performance overall last night. I watched a little of it again today and I'd say we definitely need to start better. Rumps really kept us in it on a few big chances in the first six minutes. Mersch's goal seemed to really help us settle in and play.

Last night we had more then just flashes of how good this team can play. Taking the next step involves playing at a consistently high level. If we can get to that... well, this is going to be a pretty good team.

I wouldn't really dog him as he blocks a lot of shots and does a lot of little things right for this team, but I feel like Frankie hasn't been playing up to the expectations that come along with wearing the C the last few games. I think he's without a point since the first CC game and was on the ice and involved in both Weasel goals as well as the big chance five minutes into the game that Rumpel stoned with a stretched out toe. (HUGE save.)

Happy with 3rd and 4th line play and thought Paape really stepped up on the pk. Exciting for him to get his chances.

Need to clean up a few things tonight and especially start out with energy and in control. Expect Michigan to really get after it early.

Let's Go Red!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

A LOT of people here tonight. High 13s, low 14s. My bet would be 14s.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

This may be a sellout. I'd be shocked if the number is less than 14,000. There are a couple of empty student rows in the 100s, but there was a pretty big line outside for winter break.

Are the students back on Monday?

Yeah mid to upper 14s. I posted early 1st period but didn't show up for a while. Easily 14500.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

One more week. Housing would be open for the semester tonight if it were Monday, though.

Then 14k is pretty impressive, even if it's Mich.

And before you ask - there's a decent amount of Michigan fans, but it's still pretty much all UW fans. A much higher ratio than against Minnesota or UND...even better than against UMD or SCSU in my experience.
