Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

true Gurt, and I will chill with some Labatt's (err paint thinner) tonight and The Clash - Sandinista! :)

but yeah, hope you're right and the team comes together, I'd love nothing more than for them to put together a 24 win season or better and get to the FF
I'm with both Solo and Gurt. I think they were reading their clippings too much and it sounds like they played like a team full of freshman instead of the upperclassman team they are. I'm not happy but I'm not worried yet.

If they don't blast Lake Superior State both nights, then ill get worried.

Can someone tell me why FSN-Wisconsin doesn't have ANY badger hockey games this year? Like come on, you can't gain popularity for the sport unless you are on TV and some of us don't have the luxury of madtown tv in other states. I hate having to wait till the end of the season to finally see my badgers play (with a game here or there right now that I can actually watch).

Pretty sure it's not up to the Badgers as to whether they're on FSW or not.

The network's gotta wanna do it and for that to happen, it has to be profitable. Obviously, those two things aren't happening.

Unfortunately, there's that chicken and the egg issue. Even if people are getting information about what's going on with the team, if they can't flip on the TV and actually watch games, they won't be as interested. People not as interested? They don't want to produce the broadcasts.

Is there an article on this somewhere? I think someone is holding out for money purposes and the only one losing are the fans and the potential fans.

Fun little statement from a Purdue friend of mine who isn't really a hockey fan: He said he would be more willing to watch hockey if the Boilers had a team. I personally would love IU, Purdue, Nebraska, and Illinois to all have a hockey teams. So hockey has a huge opportunity to grow the sport in states that generally have no hockey interest (yes they have Notre Dame here but nobody really pays attention to them around where I live.

I wondered this myself. I remember when the AD put out a release or statement about a "great" TV package for hockey. I looked at it and said ***!?/ primarily because of the lack of FSW coverage. So we're supposed to be happy with less? That might work with concessions at football games (sorry, I couldn't resist) but we're relying on BTN - which isn't going to show every Badger game, NBCSN and CBSSN for our TV games. And FSW, which did a good job filling in the gaps, is gone? That's not a TV package, it's another screw job to the Badger hockey community. You know **** well that if Barry wanted FSW to show those games, they would be on or at least on WPT on a tape delayed basis. Oh...but you can PAY to watch the games streamed on the Badgers website.

If hockey isn't a great draw for FSW, something doesn't seem right. They'll end up showing Gopher games half the time anyway. I smell Barry all over this.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

I dislike Barry as much as anyone, but I don't believe for a second that he's out to intentionally destroy the hockey program or college hockey in general. I just think he's either out of touch or has delegated to people who are out of touch (more likely - doubt he spends any time on hockey).

Barry's all about $ though and if FSW wanted to show the games, I gotta believe they'd be showing the games. Can't imagine Barry (or the department) turning down any amount of $ or the exposure (albeit, limited) that being on TV would generate.

Is it possible that the department is demanding too much for the broadcast rights and FSW is saying that it can't be profitable at that amount? I suppose. Gotta have sponsors that want to pay to be on the broadcasts and as someone who decides when and where my company advertises, I wouldn't pay what they'd want to hit so few households.

There aren't as many UW hockey fans out there as some of you think.

Just as easy for FSW to show poker and throw the cheap-o weekend rotators on.

EDIT: I just emailed my Charter rep to see if she knows any details. I'll let you know what I find out, if anything. She's pretty in the loop with FSW though, so there's a decent chance she'll know.

He doesn't spend time on anything at all. And I'm not saying that to be obnoxious.

There is no production cost to pick up rodent games to fill in empty time slots. To pay people to broadcast a UW game instead means there has to be enough interest to justify spending money on equipment, cameramen, announcers, ect. Judging by the incresing numbers of empty seats in the Kohl....I suspect that interest just may not be enough at this point.

The lack of tape delay on PBS is a huge concern. PBS has been able to fund this in the past through the pledge drives and sponsors like Rayovac and Goodmans. What happened to these broadcasts? It can't cost that much to produce the games on PBS. They have the equipment/technology already. One would think UW would have some media majors who'd love some practical experience running cameras, control boards, ect. I'll do the play by play for free if they need someone, just pay my way into the building. :)

The PBS rebroadcasts of football games went away when the BTN launched coz they had rights to rebroadcasts, iirc.

Was it the same for hockey and hoops?

The Big Ten Network owns rebroadcast rights on games they show live. Other than that PBS can do whatever they want.

Also...this might please you guys. Both games this weekend will be shown live on the Wisconsin Channel.

Assuming that is a local tv station in Wisconsin, is there a website for the Wisconsin channel?
