Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I thought it was Blake Geoffrion and he said "Where the hell is Quinnipiac anyway ?

Blake may have too, but I do remember Ryan Suter after taking a penalty vs QU talking **** in the penalty box at the Q player and kept asking him *** is quinnipiac??!?!?!

It was Suter. Every time I here the word Quinnipiac I think of that little talk Suter had with the Quinnipiac player.

Your memory is better than mine. I looked through the media guide, Geoffrion never played Quinnipiac but Suter did. It's a b**** getting old and having CRS (can't remember sh**). Now what were we talking about ?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

As of right now what UW has on campus already and what UW is bringing in next year this should be a fun team to watch. NCAA tourney? Maybe even a national championship? Here is what I believe might be the way to early line combos. Remember this is a first draft. Feel free to post what you believe they could be.

This is if nobody leaves early.

Besse-Zengerle-Kerdiles. Could be a DOMINANT line.
Mersch-Woods-LaBate. Played well together this year when Lee was out.
Zulinick-Dahl-Barnes. Almost hate to take Dahl away from Little but he has offensive capabilities.
Little-Meuer-Navin/Cavallini/Paape. Grinder line, kind of.

McCabe-Simonelli. Played well all season.
Wittcow-Faust. Solid pair, struggled vs. Lowell
Schulze-Drake. Potential.

Rumpel
Peterson
Grunwald (RS)
Miller

As for PP. Besse could be on the point with his rifle of a shot with McCabe. Also with Zengz, Kerdiles, Mersch.

Rough sketch of what could happen. Things could change with more arrivals or departures.

I don't know if this line up can keep up with PSU. ;)

would put barnes back on the 1st line with zengerle and kerdiles...that line was very potent down the stretch, Barnes played outstanding tha last 2 monbths of this season dont see him dropping to a 3rd liner not with that work ethic... would imagine Davison if still coming in will fit into the picture somewhere, just couldn't see him as an every night scratch

I agree w/ DCB, just don't see Beese stepping straight from MN HS hockey to the top line of a veteran laden Badger team. Beese sounds offensively gifted but needs work on his two way game, so he probably needs to play w/ a couple guys who can cover for his still developing defensive game, but would benefit from his playmaking ability on the other end.

I also disagree the Simonelli played well all season, most of the season I didn't see him do anything special, rarely any next level type of play out of him. He is a quality DI blue liner, but I expected more based on some hype coming in the door years ago. I guess I don't see him as a top pairing kind of player.

Pretty much agree. To me it would be quite a surprise (although a pleasant one) to see Besse go from high school to a top line (in the B1G!) coming in as a true freshman. My expectation would be that he will need to compete hard for playing time, assuming all the Badger forwards return. Despite the quality of MN high school hockey and Besse's dominating scoring in the league, he remains at this point undrafted. It's going to be a big step up to D-1 Hockey. He's a very good athlete and certainly we should have high expectations for him though.

I originally had Barnes and Besse flipped but changed it because a line such as Zulinick-Dahl-Besse seems so young. Yeah Barnes played well with Zengz and Kerdiles a majority of the second half of the year.

As for Simonelli. Could pair with Drake and McCabe pair with Schulze as Schulze has offensive potential.

I don't see Davison seeing much ice time his first year, but I could be wrong.

Also might see McGuire redshirting.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I would think that probably outside of Mersch, Zengerle, and Kerdiles, (assuming they are all back and healthy) Cracking the top six for anyone is going to be a challenge. Barnes, Labate, and Woods played pretty well for the most part the second half but there's no guarantee for anyone. Zulinick will want a spot, and while I don't know that many folks think of Jefferson Dahl as a top six guy, the boys are going to have to work to keep him out of there as well. He was very consistent all year, showed flashes, his intangibles are very high, and he sees the ice as well as anyone. Maybe he isn't seen as having as big of upside as some of the other kids, but hard work over the summer combined with his experience and who knows where he'll fit in the mix? Hopefully the Badgers will have guys deserving of top six spots in the top nine, and deserving top nine guys outside there as well. Great problem to have if it materializes.

Bottom line is, every single one of these guys has to get better. Every one. McCabe needs to reach his star potential. Guys need to be Hobey candidates. And the guys currently down the totem pole need to challenge. Right now if you are on the roster (or will be in the fall) you do have a chance to play a significant role next year. That includes Meuer, Pappe, Navin and the new guys. It's going to depend on how hard they work and how much they can improve themselves between now and next October.

Depth, what a novel concept.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

After struggling to get chemistry going, once it got going it was awesome, I would not change Barnes/Zengerlee/Kerdiles.
I don't like the LaBate/Woods/Mersch Line. I think LaBate and Woods are more 3rd line guys. Zulinick is a C, but I recall Eaves didn't think he was responsible enough to handle the C spot, so he stuck him at wing. He's a year more responsible next year.

Barnes/Zengerlee/Kerdiles
Merch/Zulinick/Besse
Labate/Woods/Meuer
Little/Dahl/Best Available

Besse has to play with offensive players so he gets off to a good start. Eaves will need to tolerate his youthful mistakes becuase his firepower is too good to waste.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I wonder if Steve Miller...Gwoz's lead assistant at DU who ran the D (& D recruiting)...will come onto Eaves radar for a permanent replacement for Buters? Seems DU is going el cheapo for hockey coaching and most doubt this guy will have much of a chance to get the head gig at DU. Sun Prairie guy who has been a high end assistant that noteably has been the fly in the ointment on a couple memorable guys UW wanted...Wiercioch (I know it was more timing issue with a last minute slot coming free then anything) and Butcher.

In addition to the likelihood Will Butcher could follow him, let's not forget that guy had an awesome Band back in the day!

100% love the idea .

This is what I'm hoping for. An experienced #1 assistant coach!! If Walsh stays I will be extremely disappointed. I would rather not have two assistants where there highest level of coaching prior to Wisc. was youth hockey. That's ridiculous for a school like UW. If Walsh thinks college level coaching is in his cards have him work up the ladder. A good recommendation from Eaves would open a lot of doors for him.
