Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Now if the Gophers could only get UW off their schedule, your school would have no exposure in Minnesota and everyone would be happy. Would so much rather be playing UND.

I just wanna play the 2 big kahouna's in rodentsota, the rodents and da dawgs. The little adopted step children can go away. UW still needs to expose the top end folks in rodentsota to UW hockey so the smart ones know there's a great option just to the east.

Walsh....yeah, his pedigree isn't that great (Rancid's was, though time probably had passed him by), but the results on the ice show Walsh knows what he is doing. Other than the last game of the year, they D played very well, better than at any time under Rancid. I just wish he had recruiting contacts laid in Canada. Did I want Butcher? Heck yeah, but I'm comfortable with Eaves' choice considering there was a very small but very good body of work for all of us to see.

I don't know Walsh personally, but everyone that I've talked to that he has coached absolutely raves about his ability to coach and teach players. Not a bad sign.

He is great.

I sent my kid to his defenseman/body contact camps twice and he was also a coach at the summer program in Oregon that my son attends.

Don't know if he'll be there this summer considering his new duties.

I sat in the stands and took a lot of notes as I watched him and used those notes with my teams over the years. He was great at explaining things to kids (and me by proxy).

He also wrote the book (literally) for USA Hockey on Advanced Body Contact & Individual & Team Defense - which I also drew from quite a bit.

Have no idea if he'll be able to recruit, but as a coach, I haven't run into any better around here.

Youth level, I know, but that stuff translates to all ages. If you're good, you're good.

You're referring to Michigan? Mass maybe? Because we all know Wisconsin is that void between Minnesota and Michigan where hockey ceases to matter. Heck, your neighbor to the South, Illinois, is more relevant when it comes to hockey.

Even better, your collegiate home in Indiana--the home of Rick Mount. Now there's a hockey hotbed. Of course, you can adopt someplace like BC, UND, Wisconsin, or anyplace you want if it makes you feel like part of the club.

I'm on-board w/Walsh. I thought he did a great job w/the D last season and while we don't know how he can recruit isn't that primarily Shuey's job?

Is Purdue good at anything at all? Anything?

I think it is recognized as having some very good 200-level agronomy classes.

And btw, the Badgers' schedule for this coming season seems pretty good to me, though many of you don't seem very excited about it. Seems to me the quality of opposition might be up, if anything, though I don't pretend to know what MSU will have.

I did hear that someone in GF is trying to convince Barry to fly the Badgers up there in a helicopter for a game of pond hockey--no dashers. That would save your season and keep UND's schedule legitimate.

Nothing will please a lot of people posting on here.

MadCityRich:
10 years of posting mediocrity.

Don't be so hard on yourself there, old timah. :)

Stepan survives the night, Gardiner doesn't.

In looking over the partial list of guys who applied for the assistant spot (off the WSJ), none of them really jump off the page as wow, mostly guys looking to bear into the college ranks. I didn't have any expectations as to who would be applying, but the list seems pretty underwhelming.

I have the full list. It's very underwhelming.

which leads to the question of why. Did some people think that Walsh was a prohibitive favorite? Uncertanty to Eaves future at UW? Eaves and/or UW's reputation for poor treatment? Just and odd situation? The result of Sauer not developing a coaching tree with former players in the way that many other top coaches do? Were the applicants as equally underwhelming back in 2010 when UW ended up with Butters?

I don't expect anyone to have all the answers to this, but you cannot have a continually great program without a great coaching staff in place.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Can someone post the list, or direct me to it, as I have not seen it posted anywhere?

Thanks,

Todd

I would imagine that your guesses are close to the mark.

Would you pack up and move here under the current circumstances? (rhetorical)

I'd say McDonagh survived night after getting plowed into the boards...but was able to come back, get a post-game interview and get a Cretin-Derham Hall and Wisconsin shout-out from McGuire which was pretty cool.

Felt bad for Gardiner and the Leafs.
