Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I think people are arguing past each other.

It is possible to have a successful SEASON while still not having a successful PROGRAM.

Anytime you win any of your three major trophies or make the F4, that season has been a success.

Any stretch where you don't make the NCAAs more than 40% of the time and any miss home ice just as often indicates that the program is not being successful.

I thought this was the point of the Eaves bashing all along. Sure, we get a good season here and there (despite all odds to the contrary, this wound up being one), but we're also batting under .500 for a top-half WCHA finish and NCAA berth since the '06 title. Even with our little miracle of squeezing into the NCAAs this year.

Between 03-04 and 05-06, Eaves was building something very impressive and its fallen off the wagon (with intermittent success) since. While the second half of this season was great, we need to see some sustainability before we can say that Eaves is taking us back to where we need to be.

I'm very happy short term but holding my reservations on the long term. Is this a 2003-04 season that is building to something special or a 2009-10 season where the wheels fall off entirely?

I think that some people are sufficiently frustrated with the losses and general failures over the past X seasons and the overall state of the program that they are unable/unwilling to see the accomplishments and successes in this season.

I know that I for one, am expecting the bottom to fall out. It's not a question of if, but a question of when.

Well, that shouldn't be directed at me I hope.

I'm thrilled with how this team responded to a horrible start. Winning the last ever Final Five was a coup and will be remembered for quite some time. And as I said previously, it's not like they just got hot for a couple of weeks or rode a hot goalie. They showed some real guts and character and I'm really happy for them and proud of them.

Win or lose on Friday, this season was a success.

Just the Broadmoor (for the last time) in front of Sioux Nation and the Goof fans is enough to make me smile ear to ear.

I share your concerns heading into the future, but for my part, I will let it drop till the offseason where I will have to agonize over keeping my Friday tix.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Brother Almington,

I am with you in your analysis. I do believe in order for Wisconsin to regain its status as a perennial contender for national titles, without hiccups, without excuses, and without rationalizations, that a change is necessary. Uninventive, uncreative, system based hockey is boring me to tears and is NOT getting the consistent results I expect.

I cannot tolerate the mediocrity and the unbalanced recruiting causing the "off years". There is absolutely no reason why Wisconsin doesn't content every year for titles unless something is wrong at the helm. Its Alvarez and Eaves...not the kids.

The boys should be congratulated for a great Final 5 run. It was fun to watch...and in a season in which there have been a ton of questions, rotten losses, and struggles, I am happy for the run. It was an impressive one to be sure.

I am hoping UW can add #7 this year. I am not optimistic it can do it, but I am happy for the kids to have that chance.

BTW, shout out to my alma mater who is back to the Sweet 16 yet again! Go Warriors! (non hockey related content!)

It was sweet. We go up to St. Paul every year and have "gotten used to" Wisconsin not being there at all, much less winning it.

At the beginning of the season I was hoping we could put our name on the last McNaughton Cup of the era. We came surprisingly close to it, given the awful start. The Broadmoor was a nice consolation.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

I know that the poles never matter, and especially now that we are down to a single game elimination tournament for all the marbles...but I thought it was funny to see the Badgers jump up to #8 in the USCHO poll.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

New subject: do we know if any local channels are picking up the game on Friday?
Okay, I got a response from a basic athletic dept. inquiry:

Hello David,

As of now the ESPN3 online broadcast and the delayed ESPNU broadcast are the only broadcasts that we are aware of at this point. It is our understanding though that there are some TV stations currently negotiating for the rights to televise the game.

Please feel free to contact us later in the week to check if more stations will be available.

Thank you supporting UW Athletics and On Wisconsin!

Best Regards,

You could tell from the post-game celebration, the team was really excited to win it.

Not to dwell on it, but this is what things are looking like right now. Along with Almington and others, I have concerns going forward. Eaves will likely have to bring in five recruits (in addition to Soleway) in 2014. One of them could be Dvorak, who is a stud but needs to fill out. Would be nice if they could add a transfer junior or something in that class so you're not starting with 6 freshmen. You add a transfer and maybe a blue-chip 1-2 year kid like Ryan Gropp and that class is down to 4 by the time they graduate. Would be one way of getting that cycle back to a reasonable number.

In re Friday broadcast, I find it interesting that some stations have entered into negotiations to air the game as ESPN historically strictly controls content they air on ESPN3 in an attempt to promote their streaming site. I hope for everyone's sake they ease up and allow the local broadcast. That said, the streaming picture quality is excellent and easily displayed on your tv and costs nothing but a little time to sign up for the service. Go Bucky!

I've emailed the general inquiries e-mail for NESN to see if ESPN is only allowing them to take the feed in certain markets or if people across the country will be able to see it. There are quite a few cable/satellite providers with NESN on the expanded sports tier.

And it was nice to see the Badgers weren't too awestruck playing before a full crowd.

This will come back on you, you know, you slimey gloater.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

If you add a win Wisconsin is in the top 8 and a firm lock.
And yet there no scenarios for us to get into the tourney if we lost at any point last weekend.

Not to degrade what an accomplishment it was for us to win the F5 and get into the tourney, but without 5 wins the last two weeks, we're on the outside looking in. While it might be overdramatic to say that we got in the same way Canisius did, it's still true that we were mighty **** close to missing out.

Right, and as I pointed out they were a win the other way from being as high as No. 6 in the PairWise.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol XXV: There's Hope! Or whatever...

Is it my imagination or does Kerdiles have the best hand/eye coordination in team history? I can't count the number of times he redirects, tips and bats pucks out of the air...amazing. Now if he could only learn to skate under control. Sigh...with those talents he should be gone soon.
