I think people are arguing past each other.
It is possible to have a successful SEASON while still not having a successful PROGRAM.
Anytime you win any of your three major trophies or make the F4, that season has been a success.
Any stretch where you don't make the NCAAs more than 40% of the time and any miss home ice just as often indicates that the program is not being successful.
I thought this was the point of the Eaves bashing all along. Sure, we get a good season here and there (despite all odds to the contrary, this wound up being one), but we're also batting under .500 for a top-half WCHA finish and NCAA berth since the '06 title. Even with our little miracle of squeezing into the NCAAs this year.
Between 03-04 and 05-06, Eaves was building something very impressive and its fallen off the wagon (with intermittent success) since. While the second half of this season was great, we need to see some sustainability before we can say that Eaves is taking us back to where we need to be.
I'm very happy short term but holding my reservations on the long term. Is this a 2003-04 season that is building to something special or a 2009-10 season where the wheels fall off entirely?
