Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

It sounds as if the situation started because a photo surfaced of Kerdiles out to dinner at the NHL draft with representatives from Pulver Sports and some of their clients including Tyler Seguin, Nail Yakupov, and Alex Galchenyuk.

It's certainly not an NCAA violation to be at the dinner, but the student athlete would be required to pay for his own meal as he cannot receive any benefits.

This is the part that kills me, football players can go to bowl games and receive phones, clothing, i-pads etc etc from the bowl sponsors, but student athletes can't receive gifts ???? Reminds me of a football player a few years back, the kids family was poor and when his mother died he did not have the money to go back home for the funeral so the coach paid for his plane ticket. NCAA in all their wisdom and compassion suspended the kid.

The bowl gifts are NCAA approved and limited. Not a unregulated free-for-all.

The NCAA is not known as a compassionate organization. Plenty of examples of student athletes with true need that are unable to get non-government assistance because it would cost the student their eligibility.

from Coach Eaves - "I've heard rumors (of a deadline), but there's no foundation to those,'' Eaves said.

not sure if this changes anything really unless the NCAA reduces the punishment to say one month or something...anything more than a 4-6 week suspension and I'd have to suspect Kerdiles considers jumping to MJ immediately.

this is just pathetic on the NCAA's part unless they've got some larger infraction to announce that we're unaware of

I asked @coreypronman, an expert on NHL prospects and all things related, and he said if the suspension is any longer than half a season he should bolt. Not to say that's what Kerdiles is thinking, but something to keep in mind for sure. We'll see what happens when it happens though.

I think corey is a bit optimistic here. If they say Nic can't play until January I'm sure his NHL team will want him playing earlier than that, and unless he's REALLY in love with UW or the idea of playing for Coach Eaves I can't see him wanting to sit in the stands for 3 or 3 1/2 months. That's an awful long time to be essentially a healthy scratch each night.

or maybe I'm too pessimistic about all of this

Maybe coach Eaves will double down and offer him two free mugs if he stays.

So is the NCAA required to disclosed the infractions? If so, when will we know the details? If not, why not?

I asked this question of John Infante, who Chuck linked to. And here was his response:

John Infante said:
No, the NCAA is not required at all. In some high profile cases, the NCAA may put out a release announcing the penalties and the nature of the violations. But it is hard to tell whether they will do that with this case, so there is no time frame. When Kerdiles' appeal is over, UW may announce something though.

I think its a bunch of crap if the NCAA doesn't do a full disclosure of the infractions and the basis for it's decision. Isn't a major part of the point of the punishment to inform and warn schools, agents and student athletes about the type of conduct that is prohibited?

I thought it was interesting in Andy Baggot's story yesterday he reported that Kerdiles mother was called for a quote, but she declined, citing "instructions from the NCAA." If the NCAA did that to my kid I know where I'd stick those instructions (although I understand her position given the ongoing appeal).

There basically is no one the NCAA is accountable to, is there?

Received my tickets to the first women's game and they are a plastic/laminate oversized ticket. I assume as a keepsake for the first ever game in LaBahn.

Cool!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Anybody know when tickets for the SCSU series at the Dane became available and where to order them?

I believe they have to be bought at the Bradley Center box office day of the game.

Good luck!

Sorry, don't know but someone (who isn't such a jerk) will be along soon to help.

:p

Benjamin Franklin.

I assume they would be accountable to those they *cough* "serve" *cough*, which would be the Universities and all the Student Atheletes. The nc$$ just needs to be reformed from this arbitrary Soviet style of government where they tell you what to do, change the rules whenever they want, you can't question it and you get no explanation for why they did what they did. This is a Free Republic, not some backward 3rd world commie country (well maybe it is, but that's for the Cafe and not here :)).
