Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

I hope the kid sticks it out to play in college but the first thing that I wonder is if he bolts for juniors after something like this.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

This is going to end up being more than just the dinner.

It has to be. The adviser role has been around forever and we don't see this happen. I would imagine there has to be something rather unique/major for this kind of judgment to be handed down in this case.

I know a lot of people on twitter are ripping on the NCAA for this situation... and maybe it will be worthy criticism in the end. But until we really know all of the evidence, it is premature to say it is a good or bad decision.

The issue, to me, is the NCAA's suborn insistence on rigid amateurism at all costs when they are raking in piles and piles of money. Hypocracy at its worst to me.

The Kerdiles situation is unfortunate. I too, will reserve judgement on the finding until the facts come out.
However, I won't be surprised if it turns out the NCAA is being petty.
My question is....will Anaheim tell him to go play major junior to avoid going a full season without playing competitive hockey?
Can he still play in the USHL or BCHL for a season to keep his NCAA eligibility?
Or, does he have to stay at UW for the season and practice with the team?

Seems odd to me that it's a suspension.

If he's forfeited his amateur status, would it be a lifetime ban? Not that they're saying that...

I don't remember too many one year suspensions.

Gotta be more than a dinner.

Unless the appeal ends well, I doubt we ever see Kerdiles play a single game of college hockey. He ain't sitting a year without playing competitive hockey anywhere.

i can't see any circumstance where a kid like this takes a year off. No way, no how.

I'm guessing we lose him if this doesn't get overturned.

He would have to stay at UW if he hopes to play college hockey again. He'll go to the WHL if the punishment is upheld. He's too good not to play for a whole year.

I can understand the frustration.

My attitude is the adviser relationship has been around a long time and been handled appropriately many hundreds of times for players that went to UW and dozens of other schools. If this situation was something that consistently happened to kids, it would certainly seem like something would need to change. But this is clearly an exception to the rule and you'd have to think there is something pretty legit for them to do this.

If Chuck/Andy is correct, then I still call the ruling ridiculous, even if it is a violation of the rules of the NCAA. I as a college student can hold up a can of whatever I want and post a picture of it on twitter. Do I get suspended? No. If the Universities/NCAA were really concerned with strictly the amateur aspect of this situation, they wouldn't hand out free apparel and equipment to all the athletes. Don't the Universities get money for NCAA Video Games in which their students' names may not show up, but their likenesses surely do. Almost all athletes are seen to other students and community members as pros any way. What's the point of punishing kids for that? I agree with the original statement. The NCAA is far too rigid about amateurism.

Yeah, Eaves announced just now that Wisconsin is appealing a one year suspension that the NCAA gave Kerdiles. Wow.

The key word is "suspension" and it there has to be more to it than just dinner. The NC$$ is petty and arbitrary, but that would beat all. My guess is unless Kerdiles tells his side of the story we'll never know because Eaves certainly won't say anything.

While it's on my mind, how long is McCabe out? The Baggott article implied he would not be skating this weekend either.

Eaves said McCabe is for sure playing this weekend.

Question: is there anything about the picture being tweeted by Pulver that might help Kerdiles' case? For all we know he was carrying the product and Pulver happened to snap a picture of him without his knowledge. Obviously it's a stretch to be true, but could the ambiguous nature of the photo help at all?

Advisers aren't supposed to be promoting college players that they "advise" in any fashion.

Right, but I'm wondering if that should truly be a violation for Nic, or if Pulver should be the one who is to 'blame.' I guess I just don't really agree with this infraction, but that might just be my rose colored glasses too.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

How is Nic holding a cup with a logo on it different than Chad holding up a stick? I mean look how high he is holding it. He must be promoting the glory of Easton.

(Nothing against Mr. Rau, his image just popped up first).

No. Chuck has tweeted the picture in question. I think the issue the NCAA has with it is was being used to promote BioSteel by PulverSports.

I still think a year is too long.
