Not to mention if a goalie gets hurt during the season you'd be down to one goalie. I don't think you'd ever want to only have 2 goalies on a roster.

I just don't remember Jeff Sauer or Eaves (early in his tenure) having a 3rd goalie (that was talked about anyway), so I was just curious.

College teams ALWAYS have a 3rd goalie (and sometimes a 4th), generally a in-state walk-on who has aged out of juniors and will practice for 4 years and gets a bit of financial aid and to take advantage of the academic support that is offered to athletes.

Why is there a need to carry 3 goalies for practicing? Any sort of scrimmage means one either rides the pine the whole time or if they rotate the quality guys are getting gypped on ice time, which could hurt their development. Any thoughts?

Yes; first its not like they scrimmage a lot. Two goalies is not much wiggle room at all.

Second, you're offensive to Gypsies

Sounds like almost the entire team for next season is in town taking classes, and going through summer workouts.

Might be June, but I'm getting excited for October.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

Future n/c schedules:

2013/2014
Home: CC-2, Lake St-2, NM-2 Away: Miami-2, BU-1, BC-1
2014/2015
Home: BU-2, Tech-2, UND-2 Away: DU-1, CC-1
2015/2016
Home: DU-2 Away: UND-2, BU-1, BC-1
2016/2017
Home: BC-2, UND-2 Away: DU-1, CC-1
2017/2018
Away: UND-2

Thoughts...I'd like to see some more cupcakes, those are mostly tough match-ups. A .500 n/c record won't help them make the ncaa. It's nice to see "area" teams like Tech, NM and Lake St., it gives opposing fans the chance to for a decent roadtrip.

So once the b6 conference fires up, how many n/c games will they have, about 12?

Wisconsin will play 14 non-conference games every season. More if they play in the IceBreaker or if they go to Alaska. Trust me, there is plenty of room for cupcakes.

I have been very skeptical about the quality of non-conference opponents once the B6 starts, but I must say I am quite impressed by this initial offering on what is already planned for the coming seasons. I know that it is about watching the Badgers, our team not the other team, but the quality of the opponent helps.

I see some nice road trips in there for Badgers fans, like a weekend in Boston and another in Colorado. Depending upon the timing of those non-conference series in their given year those will be high on my list to attend.

And Chuck is right, there will be plenty of room for some AHA and ECAC teams to come to the Kohl Center to round out the schedules over all these years. Knowing Barry Alvarez, he'll maximize all the home games he can get, and I wouldn't be surprised to see UW travel to UAA once every three or four years for the extra two home games w/ the exemption, but also the experience for the team.

I know I don't get a vote, but continuing a relationship with Duluth and adding Notre Dame into the mix would be nice.

Agreed. This looks awesome to me - better than anything that we've had in recent years. Very stoked for this!

Maybe they're thinking that quality/high profile opponents will translate into butts in the seats. I hope so!

See... Barry knows best. :p

I agree with 14 there's plenty cupcake spots. I also agree I'd like to see UMD and the other UND on the schedule. I'd also like to see Harvard and Yale, come classic names that would put butts in the seats.

Not that I don't want to play these teams, but I find it hard to believe that people are going to come out to games for reason that the games are against Harvard and Yale.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

We have a tough enough time getting to 85% capacity as it is. Not sure that Harvard or Yale is going to make that big of a difference.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

I wouldn't be surprised to see UW travel to UAA once every three or four years for the extra two home games w/ the exemption, but also the experience for the team.

No extra home games for NC games in AK, they get to play 2 extra games, but they can play the same number of home games regardless of if they travel to AK.

Example:
34 game schedule (no exemptions)
20 B10 games (10 Home, 10 Away).
10 Home NC games
4 Away NC games

36 game schedule (with AK exemption)
20 B10 games (10 Home, 10 Away).
10 Home NC games
6 Away NC games (includes 2 games to AK)

In both cases UW would have 20 Home games and could have up to 14 home games regardless of a trip to AK.

The value of the AK trip would be as a bonding experience for the team and a pair of extra games in total, but no extra home games because you do not receive an exemption for two "mandatory" away conference games.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XXI - For every dark night, there's a brighter day

They are more recognizable that Alabama Huntsville or Mankato State.
I know I don't have to base this on, but I feel confident saying that we have bigger issues than quality of opponent when it comes to putting butts in seats. Namely: Our fanbase isn't as interested as they ought to be.
