Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

The comment on Auston Matthews is the most BS thing I have read. There was no way the number one draft prospect was going to play on a terrible terrible horrible college team, vs getting paid $400,000 to play against pros in europe. nope.

To be fair, G2O has brought massive changes to the program already, all for the positive including bringing in some D help for this season. They would have done the same a year earlier I'm sure. I'm thinking Tony could have landed Matthews. I mean he considered UW late in the game as it was right? If Tony and crew were there I think they could have convinced him to come.

.02 anyway:)

I am sure if G2O was there, Wisconsin would have been a much better team. But, Mathews and his advisers would have been looking at the previous team, which was not good.

He DID add Wisconsin to the list of schools the public knew about partway through that season, and my best guess as to the explanation for that timing was that a coaching change - likely involving Don Granato - was highly likely. Of course, that's just guesswork beyond the list of schools his camp decided to make available, and nobody was talking about Switzerland, so it was still an NCAA/WHL situation.

Looking at it in hindsight, I find it very hard to believe ANY coach would've lured Matthews from the challenge and money offered in Switzerland.

A new coach could sell it that Matthews was part of the solution @ UW. And he could have been playing on a line with another 1st round guy, that's not all bad. But this thought is contingent on MM being out and G2O being in.

I miss MM already.

He's still cleaning up the puppy crap out behind the barn.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

I don't know that there are too many mountains to climb in Northfield but I'm sure he can find a barn or two to store some hay.
St. Olaf is on a hill, granted it is only 100 feet or so above the surroundings. Other facts I learned while looking that up: There is an Eaves Avenue, Eaves Pond North, and Eaves Pond South. I graduated from there and never knew of those places.

You haven't seen anything yet....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!

I am hoping for a lot of lofty expectations, and a lot of real disappointment. You guys can beat up Michigan, though, all you want. UND too.

Those days are ovah. The red menace has awaken. Hide your women and children, sell your paint thinner related stocks, hockey related demand will be nil, at least in WI. In MI and MN, on the other hand, it will quadruple. So I rescind the sell call on thinner related stock....BUY BUY BUY. I can sell you a massive stash for a song if you want to get a head start. The shelf life is infinite.

That's a thinner high if I've ever seen one. Only 15 minutes left in the dance and a girl finally looks over at Bucky sitting alone in the dark, and now he's looking for rings. Better wait til you get out on the dance floor and she sees what you really look like Buckeroo. You might be . . . excited . . . now, but you have some serious past performance issues.

No, old pal (I'm not sure why I kinda like you, brain damage from thinner maybe?), no need for a thinner high anymore, I'm just high on life. :)

The goalie situation will be interesting this year with 3 possible candidates on the roster. Theoretically Bloomquist is G2O's guy since they brought him in, does this give him an edge? Why bring in a 3rd goalie if you like the 2 on the roster already? There is only so much $$$ available.

Down to 17 F on the spreadsheet, a bit more reasonable amount than 58. Ustaski, Cavallini, McGuire, Labosky and Zirbel should be duking out for the 12th spot.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

It should be a very interesting season. I'm not completely sure what to make of the goaltending. Jurusik was inconcistant...at times really good and the only reason the Badgers were in some games...at other times, not so good. In fairness, he was young (a true 18 year old frosh) and the D in front of him was arguably one of the worst assembled in the Eaves era. I would imagine Jurusik is better with an NAHL to D1 adjustment season under his belt and with Oz running the D....some improvement in front of him should be helpful as well. 2 decent options besides Jurusik should be a HUGE help to both push him and give us options which last year it really felt like either we get good Jurusik or there isn't much of a choice beyond that.

I am extremely excited with the group of forwards and what we should be able to do offensively. This grouping has the talent and depth to rival Eaves best groupings ('06, '10, '14). Besse/Hughes/Kunin were exceptional and one of the better lines in the country. Considering Kunin was a true 18 year old frosh, Hughes started the season at 18, and that the Badgers didn't have a lot of depth behind them to draw teams attention away from them, that line this season could be filthy. I thought Malone and Wagner brought some really good things to the dance and adding in Max Zimmer, Fredric, and a 21 year old in Labosky and hoping Freytag and Soleway can blossom a little bit should at the very least produce a couple really good lines (you are really just trying to find one to pair with the Besse/Hughes/Kunin you already have as a know commodity) and hopefully 3 lines capable of good offensive production.

I'm concerned on D and Oz will really need to work his magic. Hopefully some Oz smoke and mirrors and the puck in the other end more regularly as well as Jurusik becoming more consistent in year two with some real options behind him pushing make my fears on D less acute. Never was a big fan of Wittchow, but he and Schulze will be a loss in that we are left with a real green group. Greenway and Nyberg are talented additions if their draft position is any indicator, but you are talking about an 18 year old and a 19 year old getting his first taste of North American smaller ice surfaces, so I suspect there will be some growing pains there...especially that they will be forced into significant roles based on the balance of the roster options.

For the first time in a three off seasons, I am excited in a Summer leading into Fall. After giving up my season tickets last Summer and not even attending a single game last season (for the first time in almost 20 years), I am seriously contemplating trying to grab the season tickets back (my son is playing hockey this fall in Madison so by accident we should be in Madison on some game days).

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Here is an interesting development.

I just got an e-mail about "New Kellner Club Offerings in 2016-2017"
Here are the bits that the hockey people will care about
"The offerings for this year provide an opportunity to enjoy a casual, relaxing hospitality environment associated with men's basketball, men's hockey, and women's basketball games. No reservations are required and there is no charge for access to the Kellner Club. A cash bar and complimentary snack/food options will be available for qualifying donors to enjoy"
"Men's Hockey
- Kellner club access for all donors at the Walk-On ($50) giving level and higher that are men's hockey season ticket holders
- One pass per account will be mailed with the season tickets
- Pass allows access for donor and up to three guests
- Opens 90 minutes prior to game time of each home game"

So it looks like they are doing away with the pregame meal that you could make reservations for and turning it into more of an open food/drink room. Last year the in-game alcohol service was limited to a higher giving level, maybe the Captain ($500) level or something like that.
This will open it up to a LOT more people.

Thoughts from the masses?

Of the people on this board, how many are season ticket holders and how many have made a donation to the Athletic Development Fund?

Personally I am a season ticket holder; 4 Friday and 4 Saturday. I make a donation to the development fund, this year was $250.

I am but a poor commoner on the men's ledger......one game a year for 4 people is it. I spend the rest of the hockey budget on 3 Women's season tickets, plus I end up buying enough single game tickets when I have more than 3 attending.

What is a little scary is that the F talent may only diminish after this year. They will lose Kunin, Besse and perhaps Frederic and not replace them with equal or greater talent (Baker/Mersch/Becker). This could be THE year if they can solidify the D and G. The following year they will have improved D & G, so they won't need quite as much firepower anyway, so next year could be THE year as well. Do I smell back to back titles? :)
