Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Some interesting info from a member of Badger247 who spoke to Tony Granato last night...

I spent about 15 minutes talking to Tony Granato about the program last night. The man's picture should be next to confidence and swagger in the dictionary. He will win multiple national titles here.

Interesting nuggets he gave me last night:
Boston has signed off on Trent Frederic playing for Wisconsin next year
Minnesota has NOT signed off on Kunin coming back to Wisconsin but Tony thinks he can get it done
He guaranteed if he was here last year Auston Matthews (first overall pick this year) would have played at least 1 year for Wisconsin
Not really a nugget and it's his job to say it, but he said that the team will be much better than last year and their talent level is higher than most think.

Wait, so Minnesota doesn't want Kunin to come back THIS year, or are they talking about 17-18? See also, Frederic.

I was wondering that too, so I asked. Here's his response...

This year coming up. He said he knows the GM so he hopes Minnesota will allow him to play at Wisconsin one more year. Kunin wants to come back.
Tony also thought Wisconsin now has a huge advantage because the coaching staff has experience and contacts at basically all levels of hockey. He is hoping he can get that extra year of college out of kids that would normally be forced to go pro by their team.

Let's hope for some Kunin home cooking during his sophomore year. Kunin has the opportunity to do great things at UW. May not win a Natty, but can advance the program versus how it was run into the ground under the previous coach.

Perhaps this article about the Wild's Free Agency signings today will make you feel better

The interesting part for UW fans is this....

The additions of Staal and Stewart also allows the Wild to let prospects like Alex Tuch and recent first-round draft pick Luke Kunin more time to simmer in their respective leagues while at the same time, not limiting their potential in the future.

By the time Stewart’s deal is up, the Wild should have plenty of room for a well-seasoned Tuch, who should score plenty and play in all situations with Iowa the next year or two.

Same goes for Kunin, who will be a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin this winter. Three years from now, when Staal’s deal is completed, Kunin should be ready to take over a top-6 spot in the lineup.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Oz posted pics on Twitter from the weekend and one picture is shocking, I say shocking. JUST SHOCKING! His daughter was wearing a rodent hat and a marooon dress to boot! I will never recover from seeing that. I had to unfollow him despite our common interests of UW hockey, fatherhood and musky fishing. What else was I to do? I've got scruples you know.

It's probably not too late to run him out of town....

It's never too late. :O Being a parent obviously one can't prevent one's kids from doing stupid things ;). I still trust the G2O brain trust.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Looks like Tanner Barnes has found a new home up at St. Thomas. Good to see him continuing his hockey career. Haven't really looked into the rest of the departures but it looks like Rockwood is back in British Columbia.

Where can one find info on this and the rest of the departures?

The State Journal also had an article about it back at the end of May

Rockwood was in West Bend over the 4th of July weekend. Not sure what his plans are...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

start 4-on-4 summer league
By Michael Russo JULY 11, 2016 — 6:17PM
Starting Tuesday at Braemar Arena in Edina and lasting every Tuesday and Thursday night until the August 9-10 playoffs, a new 4-on-4 summer hockey league featuring NHL players and premier amateurs will take place. The championship will be played August 10 as players vie for the John Scott Cup.

Not kidding.

Dubbed the Da Beauty League, the league includes three games consecutively each night with the first game starting on most nights at 6 p.m. and the third game ending around 9:45. The games will consist of two 30-minute running halves.

Entry to the each night’s slate of games is $5 per person. Kids shorter than the picture of Dustin Byfuglien are allowed in for free. Season passes can be purchased for just $25.

Da Beauty League’s inaugural season features six teams sponsored by Velocity Hockey Center, Tradition Companies, Walser Automotive, Aspire Beverages, SportsDigita, and RBC Wealth Management.

The six Beauty League teams are led by captains Alex Goligoski, Ryan McDonagh, David Backes, Nick Bjugstad, Taylor Chorney and Brock Nelson.

Among the 35+ NHL Beauties playing are Zach Parise, Dustin Byfuglien, Nick Leddy, Anders Lee, Paul Martin and many more. Coaches include Keith Ballard, Erik Rasmussen, Ben Clymer, Mark Parrish, Brian Lawton, and Scott Bell.

Rosters can be seen here.

Those rosters are barring any in-season trades.

Again, I'm not kidding.

“I don’t know how my players are going to be this Winter, but this Summer they are going to be better than anyone else out on that ice.” said Ballard, coach of Velocity Hockey.

Da Beauty League will donate proceeds from games to various charities following the season including United Heroes League (formerly Defending The Blue Line).

Da Beauty League's new site is www.dabeautyleague.com. That's where fans can find rosters, stats, schedule, and more information regarding Da Beauty League.

On Twitter, it can be followed at @DaBeautyLeague.

Da Beauty League has tabbed John Scott as its first "very part-time honorary Commissioner." From the press release, "Scott is well known for his prowess as an NHL enforcer and recent NHL All Star MVP honor. Scott is a true beauty and the inspiration for Da Beauty League logo."

HOW MANY GUY/GALS ARE IN MADION AREA for Summer?

Sounds like the Wild are onboard with Kunin back in Madison, at least for now:

Was in St Paul on business so I stopped in to watch the free development camp intra squad game they had last Sunday that was open to public.
They had about 2500 folks there.
Luke looked good scoring a goal and an assist in the game.
He also did well in earlier open scrimmage due to star tribunes Mike Russo.
Also. Badger Matt Freytag was there as an invitee.

The comment on Auston Matthews is the most BS thing I have read. There was no way the number one draft prospect was going to play on a terrible terrible horrible college team, vs getting paid $400,000 to play against pros in europe. nope.
