Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

SCSU is going to be scary next year. They have a very good team coming back next year.

Some things that made me laugh.....How confused the SCSU fans were when we were yelling "we want ice cream" and then "we got ice cream". I overheard a SCSU fan go "they are stupid why don't they just go buy some". Also, when they played Jump Around only Badger fans got into it.

It's a Badger thing...did you really think anyone else would understand???

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

What does everyone think about the contact to the head penalties, is there a solution?

Patrick Johnson is about to prove his worth to UW Hockey by spending the next week teaching his teamates to be short.

Result: Badgers decimate Frozen Four field on the strength of 57 power plays over two games!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Took a whole bunch of pictures this weekend. I was in 105 (about even with the faceoff dots on the end the Badgers defended twice), row 14.

Saturday: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wackybadger/sets/72157623603202577/

Just got a wide-angle lens, hens all the wide shots. There are a bunch of shots of the "student section" in there. It was neat to see it grow over the course of the weekend.

Very cool.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

B Smith needs to stop gooning it up with the slashes, the attitude, and a bit of lazy play lately. It's like you can tell he knows he's gone next year and he's not playing as tightly and disciplined as he did earlier in the year.

I too am glad UM is gone. They were on fire.

I love the idea of the chant of all the years they won the title in the style of 1-2-3-4 we want more. Brilliant!

We were in Turners Hall (across the street from the Bradley Center) after the Badgers won it in 2006. Phil came in and led the crowd in a rousing 1,2,3,4,5,6, We Want More! It was pretty special.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Notes from St Paul real quick. Was very disapointed in the amount of fans that made the short car ride for the game saturday night. Friday i can understand a little bit but the lack of fan support for this team saturday was pathetic and a little embarrassing to the program. These guys derserve better, hopefully people wake up and support this team in detroit. 2 wins away from 2 national titles in 5 years, football cant even contend for a big ten title 2 years in a row so wake up UW alum, you will travel all the way to jacksonville to watch the bball team be 1 and done, you will travel to some bogus "who gives a crap bowl game" or hawaii but you can't drive 4 hours to support the most successfull program this university has. PATHETIC is the only word that comes to mind.

Also I thought Podge played very well all weekend long, i'm sure the staff has to be wishing they gave podge more of a chance this season....

Ticket prices.

Your understanding of economics is pathetic.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I went to get my haircut today, mentioned I went to UW. First thing the lady said was "Oh, the hockey team is doing pretty well aren't they?"

Awesome.

I'd say his understanding of the relative popularity of hockey vs. basketball and football are the problem. He's right that those teams enjoyed support at least an order of magnitude higher than the hockey team this weekend in their respective postseason endeavors, and since those trips and games cost more it can't just be the ticket prices. I was kind of embarrassed by our turnout as well.

Please don't give me the ticket prices deal, anyone could have picked up a ticket on the street for less then the cost of a badger basketball game, We got into the championship game sat. night for 25.00 each... had the regional been in wisconsin the badger turnout would have been the same and it has nothing to do with ticket prices.I bet there were more badger fans in Jacksonville last weekend then there were at the St. Paul Regional this past weekend, ticket prices is just a sorry excuse... there was very little done by the UW athletic department either...

I agree 1,000%. He didn't score this weekend but look at all the opportunities he made for himself and his line to be put in a position to score. He had like 8 shots on net Saturday alone. PJ hasn't had 8 shots on goal all year. Podge just looks more assertive out there at this point. I don't know what happened to PJ, but as his career progressed he's gotten passive. If PJ isn't an agitator, he's not worth a ****. Here's to seeing Podge two more times in Detroit.

Hey, we went to the Final Five. Somebody else has to carry the flag sometimes. ;)

Agreed, he has earned the opportunity to be on that ice in detroit...

i agree, i'm not saying we should have sold out the x with badger fans or anything like that but that turnout was really very sad. The Green bay regional in 06 was sold out with what 11,000 or something like that... there are a lot of badger hockey fans in western wisconsin, and st. paul is not that far away and yet they were nowhere to be found, the badger fans that were there were mostly uw hockey season ticket holders and uw alum that live in minneapolis...

It was anticipated all year that the Badgers would be in Green Bay. I bet the arena was mostly filled before the seedings were even announced. Not the same as this year.

Edit: In fact, I know it was mostly filled, because we bought tickets the morning after the seedings and there weren't many left.

I can understand why people didn't go though. I'm from this area you speak of and this past weekend was my third out of the last four that I've spent traveling to the cities to watch Badger hockey.

I go to the Final Five every year so that's a planned trip, the Gopher series was a last minute deal and to be honest, for as big of a Badger fan as I am, it was tough to justify the money for the third trip in four weekends. In the end I did it because I love Badger hockey but I see the other side as well.

Hmmm. More like 8,000 folks at the Resch Center, but OK.

As noted, people were anticipating UW being in Green Bay from the get-go. Wisconsin was essentially the wire to wire #1 team in the nation that year in the pairwise and was always assumed to be the front runner to get the Green Bay regional. In actuality, it got a little tight at the end there, but people made their travel plans well in advance. That was not the case in St. Paul. Lead time makes a huge difference.

Also, consider the state of the economy in 2006 compared to 2010. I don't know if you've been living under a rock for the last 4 years, but the economy kinda took a dive there.

Unemployment rate in 2006: 4.6%. Unemployment rate in 2010: 10.4%

And while the economy's been tanking, the NCAA has been busy raising ticket prices. Good for them.

Plus, if I'm a fan and I can only make one trip up to the Twin Cities to watch hockey, I'd have two options - go to the Final Five, where I know I'll see my team play two games, I'll get some other great hockey and a good atmosphere too, and it will be a decent deal - OR - plan to go to St. Paul for a regional my team might not even be in, making plans with only a week's notice, with the chance of only seeing them play once, with tickets that are much more expensive, and NO BEER...

So, is it Wisconsin's fan base that's the problem? Because it sure seems like the fan base of every single team that made the tournament this year had similar issues...

Just what I was going to post...also remember that just 2 years ago UW hosted in Madison, and the place was embarrassingly empty (relative to a Jan/Feb/Mar home regular season game) for the final, that was the year UW got in with an under .500 record. Fans apparently don't do well with short notice, especially short notice with high ticket prices.

I'd say the difference in the two season's. I wasn't aware UW had the Green Bay Regional locked all season so that probably had something to do with it but i'm not going to debate the economy because I probably have a different view then most about the state of the economy and the effect it would have for UW fans. I'm just a little upset people will go all the way down to jacksonville to watch that garbage then St. Paul and watch a team that actually has a snow balls chance in hell of winning something this season. We will see how the numbers turn out for Detroit
