Wisconsin Hockey 24-25 Improving With All Due Haste.

Will they get another win this year? Definitely no sure thing. This was an embarrassment. Tyson Dyck's incredibly stupid penalty started the downfall. BTW, Hastings seems to think a lot of him, can anyone tell me why?

Over/under on the number of portal transfers out?
That was an epic implosion. Wow. Moronic penalties, Peewee B playing the puck and not the body. Very baffling.
I do believe that Hastings is a good coach. We just don't have the right players for his system and I suspect it will be a multi year process of phasing guys in and out.

I 100% believe that we have the right coach but he bears some responsibility for the way this team has played lately.

Some thoughts:
  • This team expended so much energy digging themselves out of a 2-8 hole that they're mentally and physically beat - the Minnesota weekend just gutted them.
  • This is a mentally fragile bunch as a whole - when things start to go bad they can't change momentum.
  • This isn't a fragile team physically but they aren't tough either - it didn't help when the lost Laatsch.
  • On really good teams your best players are also the leaders - that doesn't appear to be the case with this group.
  • I can walk out of a game on the wrong side of the score and be OK as long as the team plays hard and doesn't make stupid mistakes and take stupid penalties - this team seems to be going backwards.
The other thing that I was thinking about was that this type of situation is new to Hasting as well. He's never had a season like this as a college coach so is he trying to figure things out along the way like many of his players seem to be doing?

On this note, the numbers breakdown is interesting - Laatsch, Kehrer, Mosley, Laskosky, Lindmark and Scarfone all gone. We're bringing in 5 forwards, 1 defender, and 1 goalie, which would put us 1 player over the roster limit of 26 (I think? not entirely sure of the rules) with 17 forwards and 7 defensemen. So it seems to me that Hastings either expects or will force some forwards to transfer or leave the program, maybe guys like Buss, Pietila, Mehlenbacher, Botterill. Perhaps some of the older guys (Dyck, Tassy, etc.) are planning on leaving as well. It will be interesting to see what ends up happening, ideally I would hope we can keep most of the better forwards and strike gold with newcomers Tulk and Montgomery.

I would not give up on Botterill yet. The other guys meh.

Did Adam Pietila get additional suspension time for the spearing ejection at the end of Saturday's game?
I didn't see anything on that. But could still come out. I missed it at the game and didn't see a replay of the hit.

This is an interesting point. Both he and Knott haven't been through this before and I don't know about Oliver.

I'll be tuned in for the rest of the season, but I've given up on any expectations of success. Win or lose, it would be encouraging to see them play as cohesive units, give 60 minutes, and limit stupid mistakes that end up in the back of our net.

This is how I feel as well.

Finley with such a dumb major penalty. Ran the goalie over and hit him in the head.
I don't think that was major worthy at all. Certainly wasn't rocketing into the guy. The goalie was on his knees so his head did touch Finley but it wasn't like nothing more than a hockey play.

The second goal there, Dexheimer was right there on the guy but he just didn't lift it tie up the stick. It's just the little things like that that they're not doing right that have dire consequences.

So much for this. They've struck out on all 3 counts.
