Wisconsin Hockey 22-23 Empty Dreams & Empty Seats

I flipped channels over from football to check the score, and happened to catch a between-periods interview with Shay Donovan, and caught him dropping an F-bomb!

The interview is going along, usual kinds of questions and answers. Brian Posick asks how do you handle not dressing every night. Donovan says "it 's a mentality you have to have, keep up the intensity in practice, because you know your number can be called at any time and you have to be effing ready when it is." He realizes it, Posick hears it, everybody is laughing, and Posick says "Shay I think this is the first time we've interviewed you, and it's probably going to be the last."

it was awesome.

Of course they can't stand success. Played a great d game but in the 3rd period when they needed to ramp up the pressure they totally fail to do so. A broken record. They haven't swept a big 10 series in over a year.

Jason King should be fired immediately but…maybe they want to mothball the men’s team. And that’s why King can’t bother to respond to emails and shows no interest in getting coverage for what was once the flag ship team on campus.

they’re 10-13. You know Granato and Osiecki will say they’ve got the next Heatley/Caufield coming in next year in Fink and THAT will be the final piece to get the team winning consistently.

I mean they’ve probably already said it to Mac (and what the hell does he know about hockey anyway) and he probably believes them.

but whatever. I’m going to take control in March of our 6 season tickets so we won’t be renewing (if my Dad keeps them he’d renew). The AD has shown 0 effort and less than 0 ****s to give about men’s hockey.

Here's the thing. If they really are trying to mothball/kill men's hockey, cancelling hockey season tickets only plays into their hands and gives them an excuse to follow through, especially if they view it as something that 'detracts' from football or basketball. To get their attention, we would really have to send e-mails to the effect that we believe they are sacrificing hockey for football, and we'll be cancelling our football tickets/donations until such time as we see improvement in the hockey program. That's what it would take to get McIntosh's attention.

Great point because we have football and basketball tickets as well. Not just that but we’re paying into the Badger fund to retain those seats.

I assume football tickets not renewed won’t concern them because the excitement of Fickell’s momentum will likely lead to sell-outs all next year.

something to consider regardless as the AD has pissed me off beyond belief.

The women's fill the bowl game will be the highest attended single hockey game of the season and it won't even be close. The lower 2 tiers are sold out and most of the third is sold except for the ends.

…does anyone think this site is in jeopardy? With Milewski no longer covering hockey (isn’t he the main admin here?) does the site hire someone to replace him?

EDIT: a poster on b5q mentioned a bunch of hockey sites are getting shut down…hmm

I didn’t see either game as I was up north. Sounds like Friday was good Saturday was ok but didn’t finish. Inconsistency is nothing new with this staff.

That would be a crushing blow....

The 3rd period was maddening. Down 1 goal, turn up the heat and pour it on. Press, right? Nope, let's just mail it in so we can get the bars boyz.

The Stramel/Lucius/DSP line was good all weekend. They need to stay together. Smilanic looked quite good also.

I was able to see the last five minutes Saturday and they take a stupid penalty.

I’m so ready for this season to be done and hopefully move on.

I can’t believe they are trying to shuttle the program.

Yea and no. I would be very disappointed but look at how many posters remain in just this thread. 6?

the gopher fans all left for their own forum, etc.

anyway, side note. I asked Milewski about hockey coverage. You know what his answer was? NO RESPONSE.

0. nada. I don’t know what else to call this but the intentional dismantling of the program.

who runs an athletic department like this? If any one of us were AD, the second the local newspaper stops sending people to games we’d be in their office or on the phone. Look at what they deem coverage on social media. It’s 0.

I’d be irate or sad but I’m kind of over it now and looking forward to telling King AND McIntosh “i’m not a hockey guy”, Jr. exactly why we’re not renewing all 6 tickets.

I understand where you are coming from, I really do. But I just won't believe that UW is trying to cut hockey. Madison.com / WSJ is doing what I assume is best financially for them and to assume they are colluding with UW to shuttle the program, is a bridge too far for me. I still believe there is support out there for UW hockey if they improve the team. No one likes following programs that are down. We're the minority, unfortunately, as things are now. I did copy Jason King on my email to madison.com / WSJ.

i don’t believe they’re colluding and I’m not even sure that the UW AD is scuttling the program.

however, their absolute inaction and lack of responses to season ticket holders tells me there is something REALLY wrong here. How in the hell could anyone in the AD accept stringer AP style articles just telling the score for a major sport? Even if the state journal/Madison.com says piss off we have no money and no-one cares about the team anymore anyway, they (badger men’s hockey) has virtually 0 social media presence. And that’s on the Athletic Department.

check out the social media presence of Badger men’s hockey and there is nothing. Even on game nights it’s awful.

Me too, but I bet he's probably not allowed to tell us the truth. Email Madsion.com and CC King. That's all you can do.

As far as this site goes, I could live without the men's forum, but I really enjoy the women's forum with all 17 regular posters having a lot of fun talking hockey and some smack from time to time. I abandoned the non hockey forum years ago. It's just full of intolerant know-it-alls who are not the least bit interested in an honest exchange of dialog and ideas. If you don't agree with people on a thread they just bully the crap out of you and insult you. It's pathetic.

It's just really a sad state where the program is at. Hard to believe it has fallen to these depths....

While Madison.com has left UW hockey for dead, JSOnline has a reporter covering the men's and women's team, Mark Stewart. I encourage everyone to follow him and like/retweet his work to show JSOnline we are indeed interested in his work. @MarkStewartMJS. He is also covering wrestling and women's bb as well.

Via twitter, Jim Polzin says Madison.com has posted the bb job opening and Todd is handling that beat until it gets filled. No timetable to fill it, but it has to be a highly sought after job for any up and comer. So there is hope that hockey coverage MAY get back to normal at some point, though I am doubtful or why wouldn't the sports editor just told us that right away weeks ago. Unless they were trying to sneak this by hockey fans or maybe even UW, but they were called out on it. I'd bet the AD called them out.

It kind of sucks these men's games are on Peacock. At least you can watch the women play on btn plus if you want to.
