Wisconsin Hockey 2018-2019: We can have a witty thread title when we start winning

I wasn't watching but it sounded like a tough one for our offense. Not a good finish either giving up 2 in the final 6:00. Oh well, can't win `em all, so NOW we can run the table. Those of you watching, how did Jack look the final 6 minutes?

MCR~JR is travelling in Europe and will be in Germany tomorrow. I'll text him and ask what that means.

Alright, our power play is ****ing trash.

Talk to Strobel. He's in charge of it.

I fully expect it to struggle all year.

I thought Jack was pretty good the whole night. Clarkson probably should have had 4 or 5 more goals except for Jack making a bunch of one on zero stops in the first half of the game. He kept us in it and gave us a chance.

Our vaunted young D got exposed a lot tonight. Clarkson F's were all over them and they ate a lot of pucks or made bad outlet plays. Everything happens faster on a small rink against a hungry team. The other way, 3 of Clarkson's goals came on wide open nets where our D were either way out of position out on the wall or both went out to the puck on the same side and neither stayed home. Just simple stuff.

The Mersch line was good all night again and created some great chances in the first that may have changed the game around had they gone. The rest played good at times, played terrible at times.

We score a big goal to climb back even after a really weak start and then, because one of the Clarkson guys is an idiot and came out of the penalty box when Tischke crushed a guy and gets gets DQ'd, we immediately get a 5 minute PP. Right there we have a chance to step on their neck and take control of the game. Instead, we look just awful and lazy on it, then take a penalty and let them off the hook. Just terrible stuff.

Oz didn't sound too happy with the effort post game. It just wasn't a good night.

I wasn't advocating emailing him, just noting that he runs the power play unit and I continue to be unimpressed TG hired him.

Dude, I didn't give away the nuclear codes --> Everybody's email is on the UW website.

It’s all good. Strobel knows more about hockey than I do. I’m sure they will work on it in practice.

I know, I know... Old joke.

It was a really bad game for the team and I hope that they can do more.

I know they're young kids and hope they can rally with a good game for in their next one.

Rewatched the PP's this morning and I'd say it's not as bad as it appeared the first time around. The first one was actually pretty good, produced some really good chances that we didn't get in the net. What was wrong with the bad PP's wasn't the plan or even the decision making really, it was mostly just some really poorly executed simple passes that led to turnovers. My overall impression at first was they had trouble getting it in the zone, but upon further review, with the exception of Kalynuk's drop pass to nobody, they got it in pretty well. Miller struggled all night I thought, he made a few good plays but I thought he just looked slow and out of sorts. He's got to be much better and make this team go. Late in the game I think some guys really tried to be one man shows, and the fact is, none of them are Gretzky's, so that is just not going to fly.

Hopefully some lessons learned. Clarkson looks like a team that's going to win some games, so it might not be too bad down the road, but tonight is practically a must win. Skating Larry's are not a team we can afford to lose to in a one game shot, so buckle up and get to work boys.

Great win for the guys last night.

I only caught the second period on radio so not entirely sure how Lebedeff looked overall.

Rather than scramble the lines after a low energy and fairly lackluster performance, Tony sent the Freshman - Mersch, Achan, and Caufield - over the boards to start the game along with Kalynuk and Inamoto in a move I really like. It sent a message to the boys that playing hard is going to get you more time and a bigger role on this team no matter who you are, plus that line set the tone for the game by establishing the hard forecheck right from the drop of the puck. Also paid off as that line took control in the offensive zone about six minutes in, eventually drawing a penalty and scoring the rare delayed call goal. Achan credited with his first, but it was actually Mersch who was strong in front of the net with the tip in for his first as a Badger. Remains to be seen if the scoring will be corrected.

The first remained a one sided affair, but The Larry's Arthur Brey was very good in net, managing to keep the puck out on the next 20 or so shots until goals by Kalynuk and Dhooghe midway through the second chased him to the bench. Things began to get pretty chippy the rest of the way, which was actually a good thing for the Badgers, because they were able to get in a lot of special teams work. Seamus finally got the PP off the schnied early in the third with a goal from Johnson and Weisbach. By the end of the game the PP was really clicking with good, crisp passes lot's of movement to open areas and they notched a couple more really pretty goals. Hopefully that success will build a little confidence and get the special teams going next week.

In a game in which he didn't get much work early, I thought the big Finn looked good in goal. Made a few lovely saves when the boys got a little sloppy in front of him, and looked very composed the whole way. Great game to get him started off in and he sounded really excited to have played so well in his first outing. I can see what the staff sees in him as he really is a prototypical NHL type goalie in how he plays. Will be interesting to see how the staff plays it this week. Split time or stick with the winner? I'd kind of like to see them split time for a bit, myself. There's that element of added pressure if your guys are of the mindset that if they make a mistake they're done until the other guy blows it. I'm not sure that's the best way to handle goalies, but we'll see what the brain trust comes up with.

I should add for those that didn't see it, the only goal against was on an odd man rush where the right winger sent it back against the grain stick side and piped it high corner and in with a perfect shot from the low circle. Pretty much an unstoppable shot.

3-1 at this point is awesome. Lebedeff was solid, 8 players averaging a point a game, gotta love that. PP 21%, good. PK 75%, need work.

WCHA revival this weekend playing MI Tech. I have some great memories of UW teams from the late 80's & early 90's throttling them watching on the old black and white TV. I recall the first game I ever saw on PBS was Tech, and I was thinking who the heck is Mich Tech and why is WI playing them? For some reason it pops in my head Sean Hill having a hat trick once against them.

For some reason I remember a goalie named Sardiff that got lit up playing for Tech (Pretty sure it was Tech.)

Many verses of songs sang about him.
