Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

The season is over. All NCAA tournaments have been cancelled.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

Well, just a sickening way to end the season on a whimper. No glorious battle, no dramatic plays, no wow and yikes, no trill of victory or agony of defeat. I just feel terrible for the senior class who had the chance to repeat as champs and really cement their legacy in the annals of UW glory. They DID get to experience the sheer joy of the Natty, and so did I.

I wrote this on Sr weekend, I feel like it helps me get some closure looking at it again. I really feel like I lost a friend that I never got to say goodbye to.

Senior day is upon us.

Rowe has really been a team player for the team. When the big guns were at the Olympics and MJ was trying to find scoring, she played F on the line with Roque, otherwise she has played D. Usually she was the 3rd pair or even didn't dress early on, and her skating isn't the most beautiful thing, but you have to admire her desire to do whatever it takes to help the team.

Mauermann has been so much fun to watch. Her heart is bigger than anyone's yet she is the smallest player. Clearly a fan favorite, she'll charge into any situation along the boards and out-hustle and work any player out there. I'm not sure there's another player on the team as fearless as her. She has a heck of a sniper shot too. She is so much fun to watch.

Norby maybe never lived up to her billing as Ms MN hockey (or maybe my expectations were too high), but she has been a dependable solid F all four years, scoring 20+ points all 4 years. She's just the kind of player you need on your team if you want to succeed, in fact you probably want 4 or 5 of her on your team.

When Roque came in, I didn't know what to expect since she played against boys in HS. It became apparent she was very talented and maybe a little too strong on her skates as other plays seem to fall down when they bumped into her. She improved all 4 years and what a top line player she has become. I'm not I've seen as creative a player as she is with the puck on her stick to set up goals. The 360 spins and eyes behind her head passes.....wow.

Steffen is the latest in a long string of D who arrive at UW as and freshmen fit right into the starting lineup and play like a seasoned vet from day 1. You just don't see her make any mistakes out there, no risky passes, no holding the puck too long, just an awesome D who also qb's the PP. I think we will end up missing her like we miss Rolfes and Gardner. That is a heck of a compliment.

Soup was a shocker pick-up. It looked like Cece was the heir apparent to ARD, she some in and grabs the job from day 1 and never lets it go. To backstop a Natty team is something that is truly an accomplishment, its SO hard to be the last team who doesn't lose.

Cece was the ARD heir apparent. She played well in 5 games he Fr year when ARD was injured and I was very confident she would be able to do the job as I am in any UW goalie who MJ recruits. UW is truly goalie U. What can be said other than Soup took the job and had the success to back it up. When Soup played those first games for UW the thought never crossed my mind that Cece needed to play because Soup did such a great job. There's no second guessing MJ on who plays in goal.

All these players contributed in different ways their 4 years and to bring that Natty home last year after a lot of heartbreak the years before will always bring a smile to my face. Let's finish the year out strong and be the last team not to lose again.

It's always a great day for Badger hockey ladies. Best wishes and God bless you in your future endeavors. On Wisconsin.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

Came across a very unusual recruiting situation, UW has picked up a D, Mayson Toft, from Alexandria Area HS over in the land of many tiny ponds. What is so unusual about it? She was previously committed to....................................UW River Falls (I wonder how UW River Falls out recruited Frosty for her?). She would be a 7th D, joining Buchbinder, Bowlby, Lamantia, Edwards, Grant and Kotlowski. I wonder if there's any thought of Kotlowski taking a redshirt for last year to break up the 3 person D class from this last season. It's going to be hard to replace Stefan, I don't think she ever put a skate in a wrong place all 4 years just like Rolfes and Gardner.

And all of the other D-I programs? Minnesota graduates Patty Marshall and is adding two: Josie Dunne from Chicago Mission and Maggie Nicholson from Minnetonka. With five returning D, the Gophers really shouldn't need to raid D-III rosters for recruits. ;) We might need a goalie, but that's another story. :)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

I have updated the recruiting spreadsheet with D Mayson Toft being added to next years roster.

Unless you want good ones.

I wonder if Timothy A could give a scouting report on Toft's game being as he has seen her play quite a few times. Oh wait..what that you say? He hasn't seen her? Ok, but he did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once, so he should be good to go. ;)

I LOVE staying at Holiday Inn Expresses, it's my go to. That makes me one smart dude. :)

If you have seen her play I'd love to hear your thoughts. I did read the article last night.

I goof off a lot on this forum but in this case I'll try to be serious. I do not know a thing about her. I try to see quite a few high school games during the year but it is all Twin Cities area games. Rarely ever see an out-state team so I know zip about Alexandria.

Hey, if your excited about a former DIII recruit headed to BADison then more power to ya. ;)

Um, well, hhmm, let's wait and see, though my initial thought is trading Steffen for Tost isn't a fair trade. Trading Tost for Rowe might be. Did you ever see Kotlowski play? She's up for playing time next year. I'm really jacked up to see Harvey arrive in 2021.

It's too bad Harvey isn't coming in next year as she could step in to the role Steffen played. I have seen Kotlowski play. She has above average size and shooting ability. What is a bit of a head scratcher for me about her being a WisconSIN recruit is her lack of quickness and overall D1 skating ability. And again that is just my opinion on that so take it FWIW. You'll get to judge that yourself next year and maybe to her credit she has been working on that aspect?

Thanks for the info. There is hope on the skating side, this last year Maddy Posick's skating and quickness took a major leap forward from her Fr year. It was very impressive. It would be interesting to know how she accomplished it, on her own or through the UW.

This makes me think of who was the most improved player for UW this year? I'd say it would be Posick. I can see her playing a Roque/Mauermann role of fighting it out along the boards and winning pucks. Though she is improved I wonder if it's enough to play with some scorers next season.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

Couple sad articles about Soup's shocking end to a season part 2 at the Hockey News and JS Online.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

So sad can't wait until next September. UW should have repeated.

I too can't wait until September, if the season starts on time.

I am not convinced UW "should" have won. UW was not the juggernaut at the end of the season that there were in the first 75% of it.

I started watching last year's title game on Facebook Watch and it just made me feel sad for the team that they didn't get the chance to fight it out. I only watched the first period, then I hit the sack, but I think Soup was just a different player last year vs this year for whatever reason.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

This seemed like a year were we could have seen a brand new member join the National Championship club. Someone like OSU, Cornell, Princeton, or Northeastern seemed just a likely as any of the others to win it all this year.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2019-2020 Season Thread

Today, after watching some of the replay of the 2018 Olympic final, and hearing the name Natalie Spooner again, I spent some time on a question that has occurred to me over the years: Which opposing player has the most goals against Wisconsin? Hearing Spooner reminded me of it because she had a bunch, including a hat trick that helped eliminate Wisconsin in the 2010 WCHA quarterfinals. Going in, she was my guess

So, nothing exhaustive at all, but I looked at the list of Minnesota's all-time leading scorers, and Duluth's all-time leading scorers, and the "top 20 all-time WCHA players" list, and anybody else who came to mind, using the USCHO game-by-game stat pages for the individual players.

Spooner was an excellent guess, due to her sort-of 'dark hours' status; she came in third (as far as I can tell). And just ahead of her is her teammate Hokey Langan, an even darker dark horse- also a hat trick, in the same WCHA playoff series. Langan had 11 (!). (I think in my mind, I must have been crediting some of Langan's goals to Spooner. Spooner had ten career goals vs UW.

But the 'winner' is...

Jocelyne Lamoureaux, with 12 (!) career goals against the Badgers. (Interestingly, Monique with only 5.)

Some of the other likely suspects: Natalie Darwitz, also 10; Sarah Erickson, 9; Nadine Muzerall, 9 (in only two seasons, but before UW got good); Hannah Brandt, 8; Noemie Marin, 8; Amanda Kessel (and a half-dozen others) at 7.

Feel free to throw out names of somebody I might have overlooked or not thought of, etc.

This thread had over 200,000 views? Wow. Here I thought I was in a private conversation with myself and Robert most of the time. I wanted to know how many views the rodent season thread had but it is gone. Surely not as many of this one. When you say Wisconsin, you said it all!

I've heard that drinking thinner can cause you to go blind; last year's UM thread is about a dozen threads below this one.

Surely not as many of this one.
Only about a third as many. You didn't spend as much time obsessively opening our thread as you did your own.
