Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

Oh, please. Across the street?

It's on the other side of a covered breezeway. Nothing more than a wide sidewalk, with no grass on either side. Any of us could stand in one building and hit the other building with a medicine ball. Or a shot put. Though unorthodox, it's perfectly functional.

All of us look forward to the day when OSU finally gets a new home for the two D-1 hockey teams; appropriately sized and with better amenities. But in the meantime, let's not pile on with fake news. Nobody's dodging traffic or walking 100 yards to get to the ice surface.;)

Very happy to hear all of the positive stories. This is how the world should be. And if your gear clearly says WOMEN'S Hockey, maybe it still is.

Each of us has our own set of experiences. Years ago, I enjoyed wearing sports gear on road trips precisely because I thought they'd be a good conversation starters. I did have a number of positive experiences with it. But in more recent years, the bad experiences began to outnumber the good. So I quit doing it. But on reflection, it's true that ALL of the negative experiences were connected to Men's sports. Not sure exactly what that means. But maybe Women's sports is avoiding at least one pitfall plaguing Men's sports...

Circling Back: Do remember what started this exchange. I was urging Timothy A to make the trip to the Final Face-Off. While I'm quite sure his "rodentapolis" reference was meant in a playful way, the implication was that the host city might cause him to skip the tournament. As all of the good stories demonstrate -- Make The Trip! And contrary to my sermon, wear whatever you want, wherever you want!
If you are trying to defend the great facility they have, I think you're deluded... (Roll eyes)... Covered walkway or not, the rink is in a separate building from the locker room and less impressive than my 9 yr old daughter's community rink she plays in. If you think I'm over exaggerating, I'd be happy to give you a tour of both locker rooms in the same building as the rink. Be honest with yourself about what you're defending.
No D1 college hockey team (let alone an Ohio State team with the sports funding they have) should have to dress in different building than the one they play in.

Most of the sweatshirts do say GOPHER WOMEN'S HOCKEY which I have purchased over the years through the Gopher women's hockey power play club. The hats are the national championship hats and I have several of them. ;)

I have no illusions that the same friendly atmosphere would be at the men's games in another city if we were wearing Gopher gear. Two years ago after we had gone to the Gopher women's games against St Cloud we went back in the evening to watch the St Cloud men play Western Michigan. I cheered for St Cloud wearing a plain black jacket and a Huskies hat purchased at the local Walmart before the game. There were no problems.:)

Quite to the contrary. I've had this conversation so many times over the years I'm tired of it. If that caused me to be a little short with you on the first try, I apologize for that. But only that.

I grew up elsewhere. I'm 100% aware of facilities are like in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts... and have had the opportunity to skate in all of those places. The various Chiller Rinks in Suburban Columbus are also suitably modern, though they don't have the seating necessary to be college hockey arenas.

Perhaps more to the point, I've lived through what the OSU Ice Rink was like in the '80s and '90s, when there were serious issues with the building. A ridiculously tiny visitors locker room; inadequate insulation; problems with the refrigeration system; small rink dimensions; roofing issues... In short, things that actually matter. Through multiple renovations, the facility has become functional. Still plain, but functional.

You're not exaggerating. You're hating on something simply because it's different.

Be honest with yourself about what you're defending.
What I'm "defending" is a series of practical, incremental decisions that kept Men's D-1 Hockey here at OSU afloat, and allowed for the addition of Women's D-1 Hockey back in 1999. In an ideal world, the "hockey-specific" building would have been built in 1999. Instead, what we got was a time-share for Men's Hockey in a building that's too big for college hockey, and a much lower cost remodeling job at the Ice Rink to get Women's Hockey launched. Despite the facilities challenges, our teams are doing fairly well. OSU has many strengths. A first rate hockey facility remains a need. It's in the plans for the "Athletics Village" -- a work in progress that will take many years to complete. For now, we're persevering.

No D1 college hockey team (let alone an Ohio State team with the sports funding they have) should have to dress in different building than the one they play in.
In the abstract, this is true. And you're not the only visitor who's had a negative reaction. Still, I'm sorry, but this concern is just so very trivial. The 1-2 seconds the players spend "outside?" After the first couple of times, I'll bet the players are all but oblivious to it. I suppose some observers see the high five line the players go through (in the lobby) as a security issue. What I see is something that's a neat experience -- mostly for the little kids who get to high five the players. But the players are usually smiling as well.

I presume that's an adequately full explanation, or at least not too short. Now, can we please stop hijacking the Wisconsin thread??

So at least one other poster gets the incognito approach.:)

I must say, though, that buying the home team's hat takes it to a whole new level! Glad it was a good experience.

Clearly I've offended someone with an inferiority complex. You've, once again, diluted the facts. Like Otter in Animal House, you'd have me insulting the United States of America because I'm negatively commenting on how I feel about a frat party on campus. You talk about player pride and heritage, but I'm guessing the first thing any one of those players would vote for is different facilities.

you really don't understand Wisconsin fans, if it were just us Gopher fans here, they would have said something, but with you here they are afraid you will remind them that OSU football beat them when it mattered, crushing their dreams of a Rose Bowl trip and the possibility of a national championship.

Something they are very familiar with in women's hockey.:p

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

Weekend thoughts......

Saturday...Maddy Rowe, a converted D who played on the 3rd & 4th line now on the first line? She scores 2 goals and looks good out there on that line, maybe a tad slow, but it worked. MJ is a genius. Otherwise a great team performance by UW, Soup had to make 1 great save on a breakaway. Norby was back in the lineup, but on the 4th line, easing back into the flow after an apparent injury.

Sunday...What a difference a day makes. St. Cloud played very well, really gave UW a hard time and UW was not their usual crisp selves. Soup had one great save on a breakaway, 1 goal allowed was a dandy tip from a player cutting into the slot, the other one was a backside no defensive coverage but still a great shot high, very nice looking goals. Gardner was out of the lineup, so they can 5 D and kept Rowe on the first line, which I think hurt the flow a bit for UW. They have an extra F, so they could have moved Rowe to D if they wanted to and still run 4 lines. Norby played up on the 2nd line this game.

It is worrisome that 3 out of the last 4 games UW has not played as well as earlier in the season. I would not be shocked if they dropped at least one out of the next 4 on the road against better competition.

Such an odd reply. There's simply no connection to what I wrote.

Heritage? What I actually said was that we have facilities challenges and that a new building remains a need. Everyone here would welcome a new facility. There is no preservationist movement. Nobody is saying that the Ice Rink is like Wrigley or Fenway.

Player pride? What I actually said was that the players are oblivious to the minor issue of the breezeway. My point is that the facility is now functional enough so that its limitations need no longer be a distraction for the players.

Diluted Facts? I gave you additional factual detail; a fuller story. Didn't work for you. That I can shrug off. But why the snark? It's not like we're asking the visiting teams to accept the "controversial" locker room arrangement.

Telling the OSU Ice Rink's story isn't wrong.

Choosing to embrace the building's quirks is a positive approach; a good thing.

I've had a lot of fun there over the years. It's a humble home, but some degree of loyalty is perfectly appropriate.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

I'm calling it the "Roque and Rowe" line.

Yeah, I hear it.

Love it! I have to say I was shocked to see Rowe out there on that line, but she's earned it. It was cool late in the 3rd Saturday they were double shifting her to try and get the hatty. It sucked to be denied ice cream by 1 second Saturday.

Let’s see how much fun the upcoming weekend will be with the Badgers visiting. If the Buckeyes play like they did against the Gophers, it will be an exciting weekend. If they are porous defensively like they were last weekend against the Bulldogs, you shouldn’t expect much.

Wisconsin is not playing their best hockey right now and they this season are not playing as well on the road as at home. It's hard to evaluate OSU after the last 2 weeks to know what to expect. My brain says splitsville.

Win or lose, it's always enjoyable to watch the top teams in action. Obviously it's more fun to win. But the games will be time well spent, regardless of outcome.

BTW & FWIW, the "fun" mentioned in my quote goes way beyond supporting the Women's D-1 team. Among other things, I was one of the organizers of a recreational hockey group for many years...

Quite so.

Recruit Alert!

Marianne Picard (Stanstead College) commits to University of Wisconsin for 2021-2022 @MariannePic12 @stanstead1872 @BadgerWHockey

I quick scan of the interweb doesn't reveal what position she plays or any stats, unless you can read the French on page 2 of google; maybe it's in there.

I see someone else was reading twitter at lunch, LOL. Great job.

Her team has 61 games scheduled all over the place. She should be more than ready for the rigors of the college season.

I'm watching the football transfer window news and saw that come in as well. :)

I see that she's a forward based on one recruiting site. Might be wrong though.
