Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

If Wisco is also-rans, I would hate to see what you think of Clarkson and BC.

next time you Google, have your mother do it for you
Clarkson beat WI for the championship last year
as for BC, yes, also-rans
it may be the battle of the wanna-bees this year
... or maybe not

Pretty crazy, yeah we beat up on eachother and Clarkson walks in the back door. Next year both UW and UM are going undefeated with all the firepower they have even if UM doesn't find a sieve with smaller or less holes.

you are aware that people can click the icon by the name of the person quoted and get back to the alleged quote, right?
not sure where you got "my " quote, but it wasn't me
in fact. I had to edit your post to quote you properly
my advice Tim, is forget about being a crook, especially computer or IT related crime ;)

That's harsh but at least you didn't call him a mite...

See, this is the thing...You are capable of offering good advice every now and then...:)

He could have been harsher and said that upfromtheminors was cut from the pee wees and the mites didn't want him either. Another sign of the apocalypse, pokechecker giving good advice? I always read his posts though. At times he can be somewhat informative and entertaining when he isn't just being vitriolic. ;)

Vitriolic is an awesome word. I have to remember that one. Pokey is almost bipolar or something, but the vitriol is amusing, even if I get it via a quote error done in a rush at work. Jerk.

It's a great day for hockey!

I'm so sad/mad UW is getting screwed out of home games in the playoffs. Only 4 to 5 home games left, the season has flown by. I am considering a trip to rodentapolis for the wcha thing, that's how desperate I am to see more UW hockey in person.

The vitriol is not amusing, particularly last year when he made comments suggesting the players are lesbeans. He does not deserve to be part of the conversation here.

Well, I like the word, but a comment about lesbians is not appropriate nor acceptable.

I do understand where you're coming from; the games really are that much fun.

But seriously now. Any of the other six teams would gladly accept a regular season banner and two automatic wins in the first round of the playoffs. And you know that the UW players and coaches are on board with this.

Only 4 to 5 home games left, the season has flown by. I am considering a trip to rodentapolis for the wcha thing, that's how desperate I am to see more UW hockey in person.
You should go!

One bit of unsolicited advice. Upfront, I'm not raising any serious objection to the "rodentapolis" thing. But I'm just going to take a wild guess: You're one of those fans who wears the team gear 24/7 on road trips.

Now of course you'll wear the gear to the games. But my advice: Go incognito during the tourist time. You'll have a much better experience. There's no reason to walk around town with a chip on your shoulder. Whatever your taste: restaurants, bars, museums, lakes, theaters... the Twin Cities are awesome. At the end of the weekend, you might even be willing to say "Minneapolis." :)

BTW, I do practice what I preach. Especially in Michigan. But also in Wisconsin. Love the summertime roadside cherry stands in Traverse City, MI. Can't resist Kopp's Custard in Milwuakee, WI. And Annie's Parlour in Minneapolis, MN? Not to be missed. Why ruin those experiences by trying to start a fan battle?

Many moons ago, I had the idea that wearing visiting team gear might be a good conversation starter. It didn't take me long to reject that theory.;)

Wisco fans are harmless, unlike Oakland & Philadelphia fans for example. When they win they gloat and drink beer, when they lose they still drink beer, sheepishly & silently, except for the occasional reference to the Vikings futility at winning a Super Bowl (or more recently, failure to win an NFC championship). Their gloating can sometimes get them in trouble though, like when 16 of them pursued one Viking fan to gloat about a Packer win, and then cornered and forced to fight, the Viking fan kicked the crap out of two of them and managed to run from the others (tough to run with a beer belly and ¾ drunk). That pretty much sums up Wi fans, ‘lotta talk, and a ‘lotta beer, they are humorous , if you don’t take it seriously.

My little sermon was directed toward visiting fans. Most home fans aren't going to feel threatened by a small number of visitors, or at the least they shouldn't. You obviously aren't intimidated, and that's good.

But visiting colors are going to draw the ire of a portion of the home fan base, even if it's only a small minority. If the away team fan wants to enjoy the city they've traveled to, better just to leave the fan battle part of the trip at the rink.

More to your point, there are certain NFL stadiums I'd decline to visit. Even if still a minority, the percentage of jerks is just too high. Eagles & Raiders? Yeah, those two would make my "don't bother going" list.

Happily, I can't think of a single college hockey rink I'd refuse to visit, Women's or Men's.

We have been to every woman's arena in the WCHA except OSU and never had a problem. We always wear out GWH gear (though I leave the gold pants & maroon shoes at home) We found the nicest fans in Madison, one even offered us a ticket so we could get in out of the cold while we waited for the person holding our tickets. Even Grand Forks was not hostile. We behave as guests which might help but mostly I think it is that everyone is happy to have fans at the games.

The OSU rink is nothing to make the trip for. Seriously! Very underwhelming... Not a selling point of the women's hockey program, to be sure... The home locker room is across the street in another building! Just sayin...

We have never had a bad experience and have been to all of the WCHA arenas that the women play in. The home teams fans have always been extremely friendly and helpful to us.

I almost always wear my Gopher women's hockey sweatshirts and hats whenever we travel. This has led to us having some interesting hockey conversations over the years. A few years ago we were traveling on the Verde Canyon Railroad between Clarkdale and Perkinsville in Arizona and a mother and daughter from California were seated across from us. The mother said her daughter played hockey and one of their team's players by the name of Annie Pankowski would be playing for Wisconsin next year. Another time we were at the Tides Hotel in Folly Beach SC and the guy who checked us in who was from New York said his brother played for the UMD Bulldogs. Forgot his name. More recently I was having breakfast at Denny's on Tanner's Lake and an older gentlemen came up to me and said he liked my Gopher sweatshirt and hat. Turned out he was Joel Johnson's dad. Nice guy.

Oh and one more thing, in 1986 I was at a bed and breakfast in York, England and the couple at the table next to me asked where I was from and then told me their son plays hockey for the North Stars, Bill Goldsworthy. I wasn't wearing anything Gopherish that time, but they did recognize me from being on the BBC news the night before, but that's another story.

The WCHA refs must have been told by the league to keep the whistles out of their mouths. They could have called both a slashing and a hooking penalty on the St Cloud player behind the net as she took the Badger down. And it's not even Hanrahan working the game. 3-2 Badger final.

Oh, please. Across the street?

It's on the other side of a covered breezeway. Nothing more than a wide sidewalk, with no grass on either side. Any of us could stand in one building and hit the other building with a medicine ball. Or a shot put. Though unorthodox, it's perfectly functional.

All of us look forward to the day when OSU finally gets a new home for the two D-1 hockey teams; appropriately sized and with better amenities. But in the meantime, let's not pile on with fake news. Nobody's dodging traffic or walking 100 yards to get to the ice surface.;)

Very happy to hear all of the positive stories. This is how the world should be. And if your gear clearly says WOMEN'S Hockey, maybe it still is.

Each of us has our own set of experiences. Years ago, I enjoyed wearing sports gear on road trips precisely because I thought they'd be a good conversation starters. I did have a number of positive experiences with it. But in more recent years, the bad experiences began to outnumber the good. So I quit doing it. But on reflection, it's true that ALL of the negative experiences were connected to Men's sports. Not sure exactly what that means. But maybe Women's sports is avoiding at least one pitfall plaguing Men's sports...

Circling Back: Do remember what started this exchange. I was urging Timothy A to make the trip to the Final Face-Off. While I'm quite sure his "rodentapolis" reference was meant in a playful way, the implication was that the host city might cause him to skip the tournament. As all of the good stories demonstrate -- Make The Trip! And contrary to my sermon, wear whatever you want, wherever you want!
