Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I wonder where Friesen was Saturday, she was not behind the bench.
Knowing nothing of the UW staff whereabouts, it is almost always recruiting when an assistant coach misses a game. I think there was a high-profile tournament in Detroit.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Bummer Nurse and Clark are gone for the 4 Nations Cup this weekend. That disrupts the top 2 lines. I suppose they can plug Drake back into Nurse's spot, but what to do with Clark's spot?

I hate these in-season international tournaments with a passion. It messes with the integrity of the college games and risks injury to key players, but it clearly is an accepted cost of doing business in Division 1 women's hockey.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

At a minimum Two Nations Prep. There was another one going at the same time in Detroit as well.

YES! Imagine if the M/W series were to conflict with this international stuff. I think womens hockey needs the international competition, it needs the attention and the respect that quality competition will bring. I just wish they would do it in September or April & leave the college game alone. The college game is the best advertisement for womens hockey in North America right now. Wisconsin and Minnesota are the very best representative of that at the moment and damaging them helps nobody. Lucky for W they get MSU but M gets UND, no push over even with a full line up. If it were the other way around I would say this stinks but this just stinks.

Wisconsin was in Grand Forks last year for this weekend, when the Badgers were missing even more people than they are this year. UND was minus Krzyzaniak both years.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

It will be interesting to see the line-up today and tomorrow. I assume Drake will play F but with that they will be short 1 F for 4 full lines. Maybe they will run 5 D and have another D play F (Gardner seems like a rushy D) or just spot different players into the last F spot. They have next weekend off, so Johnson doesn't have to fear overworking the F's if he goes the route of double shifting a F at times to fill out that 4th line. I'd like to see Cogan play with Pankowski and Wellhausen this weekend, kinda see what she's got. Her pedigree makes her not necessarily a 3rd line type player.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Well Tim, here are the lines....

Wellhausen McKibbon Pankowski
Cogan Sowchuk Jones
Drake Harding Shaver
Johnson XXXXXX Doner

Burke Rolfes
Channel Ryan
Gardner Williams

So MJ will flow the 3 C's through the 4th line...I have to say the forward lines look pretty weak except for the 1st line, all the eggs are in that basket.

Let's go RED!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Seems like a solid #1 line and certainly serviceable 2/3rd lines (Cogan has scored already). Nice thing is that top 2 D pairings are intact and Desbiens is between the pipes.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Great day for Wisconsin natives. Wellhausen, Drake and Jones have all lit the lamp so far today. A goal by Johnson would make it complete.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Pleasantly surprised to "see" a 6 goal performance yesterday with a jumbled line-up. Once UW put 2 on the board I was more nervous for the s/o than anything. Hopefully the gals see what happened to the rodents and keep their foot on the gas and don't get complacent. This is a big game today.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I did not think 13 goals was in the cards minus Clark and Nurse. And I was worried about the depth of this team.

Wisconsin Hockey: Resistance is futile.

Well, remember it was MSU. That said it is the special teams play that looks impressive for the Badgers. About 2/3 of the way through the undefeated season the Gophers had more short-handed goals then they had given up PP goals. It looks like this years red is trying to duplicate those sorts of numbers. SO far they look scary good.

Had you told me that Clark and Nurse would be gone for Four Nations and Pankowski wouldn't score this weekend, I certainly would not have predicted 6-0, 7-0. Even with the jumbled lines, they are getting scoring up and down the line-up which most Badger fans just weren't sure of to start the season.

Will be very interested in the national rankings this week. Just not sure a sweep against Mankato means leap-frogging BC. #1 would be nice, but I like the early lead in the WCHA standings even more.

If you want a UM championship comparison, I recall that UM used to give up "lots of" (well more than you would expect) quality scoring opportunities. They had Raty back there and she bailed them out.

ARD looks very good and comfortable in net - more so than last year. She also helps her Team out with her puck moving skills. I think she may be the difference this year.

The wcha race is the key as you stated. The goal is to win the league, then everything else falls into place (home in the ncaa's then also). Being #1 is cool now, but it's most important to keep playing at a high level and improving.

I read that UW recruit Presley Norby, though an U18 player, was invited to the 4 Nation's camp to help fill out the roster for scrimmaging and drills. What an awesome opportunity for her development. She must be pretty darn good to get the invite. She's probably more talented than any outgoing Sr. F, which bodes well for the future. Interestingly, UW has 4 outgoing F's and only 2 coming in according to collegecommitments.com.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

With all the real-time drama playing out with the men's program right now, I really like the fact that in women's hockey you get to see the players for all four years (barring injuries).
