Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Did the officials review the 2nd goal today?

sorry to go ot but since you mention this: do you have access to game video? Is there a site for them or is it proprietary and we plebs can't see it? thanks

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Yes, there was an official review of the second goal (I believe Wellhausen's goal) in Saturdays game. I'm not sure why... Anyway, this team is really playing well. They seem to have rhythm between all 4 lines and the 3 D-pairings and are doing the little things that win hockey games -- chipping pucks in and out of the zones, clearing loose pucks, blocking shots, and taking care of the puck when they have it. When the forward lines (especially the Clark, Pankowski, Wellhausen line) cycles the puck in the offensive zone it is a thing of beauty! As a former coach myself I love seeing that! Of course everyone is looking ahead to the Gopher series in December, but this team has a great chance to really establish itself as a force by the time that series comes along. They just have to stay very focused as they go on the road for a few weeks and take care of business before they come home to LaBahn in November! By the way- does anyone know if the games vs. Minnesota State this weekend will be available on video and how much the cost is to stream it? I'm not sure if the wife and I will be making the trip up to Mankato!

Yes, they are available through StretchInternet at MSU website. Last year they were free and you can stream an archive of this season's previous home games for free so I say that's a good sign this weekend's games will be free.

Thanks. The reason the puck was free for Wellhausen was because Clark ran into Mowat, knocked it free, and pushed Mowat off the post. The officials must have decided it was incidental contact as the result of Clark's move to the net, but it is tough for the goaltender to play her position when people are bumping into her. I think it is a better game if they don't allow it, because certain teams will take it to the extreme, and by January, half of the top goalies in the country will be out with injuries. The NHL places a priority on protecting the goalies, and I think that the college game should as well. I'm not saying Mowat's health was at risk on this play, but if teams decide that it is advantageous to make contact with goalies, nothing good will come from that in the long term.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Right now UW's big concern is the PP. The rodents are at 50% and UW is at 18% (BC is 31% and Clarkson is 23%).

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I am confident the power play will come around.. over the first 4 weekends the coaching staff has tried different combinations.. In 4 of the 8 games the scores were blowouts and Coach Johnson basically rolled the lines through during the power play meaning there wasn't a lot of urgency to put selected players out together.. I thought this past weekend it looked better.. I would like to see more shots personally -- especially from up high at the point. Outnumber people in front of the net and bang in a rebound! Sometimes we get a bit too cute and over pass when less is probably best!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Not so sure about that.. When looking at the replay, the puck was loose the entire play.. Mowat never had control of it and it certainly wasn't knocked loose from her possession because she never possessed it. There wasn't really much contact between Clark and Mowat at all and then Wellhausen jumped on the loose puck and stuffed into the net. It was a pretty bang - bang play.

I didn't remember much of any contact when it happened right in front of me and I still don't see much after watching the replay. There was another play in the game where Nurse went hard to the net and almost got impaled. Seemed like it should have either been interference on one team or another. That's the only play I can think of that might have been dangerous to the goalie. Simply not seeing it on the Wellhausen goal.

Not that the % would be much better, but they had a couple of PPs end within seconds due to their own penalties. I assume those count as a failed power play.

I'm not seeing it on the Wellhausen goal, either.

Edit: I'm only going by the angle shown in that video. When an attacker is in the crease, it doesn't take much to disallow a goal, but if there's any contact with the goalie, the BSU defender would need to be transparent for me to see it.

That play involving Sarah Nurse either should've been a penalty on Nurse (if she just launched herself into the goaltender, probably after losing her footing), or on the defender who shoved her from behind into the goalie (if that's what happened). Someone viewing that play from the side, rather from 200 feet away and from behind, will have had a better view than I did.

Good point. The rodents will go down and UW's should go up. In those tight games a ppg goal is huge.

One could say when UW is on the pk they actually have a pp, UW has 5 shorties and only allowed 1 ppg. Nurse nearly got #6 Saturday.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

There wasn't really much contact between Clark and Mowat at all and then Wellhausen jumped on the loose puck and stuffed into the net. It was a pretty bang - bang play.
Clark's right skate hits Mowat's pad, Mowat suddenly slides several inches to her right and away from the puck and the post, and Clark stumbles. The contact interferes with the goalie's ability to defend the shot, which is why I would have expected a whistle. But I agree that there are enough things here open to interpretation (did a defender cause the contact, was the contact sufficient, did Mowat still have an opportunity to play her position) that it isn't clear cut. Plus the ref is in rather poor position to see the play live, way down at the end of the goal line behind the play. For those who aren't seeing any contact at all, take off the red and white glasses and look again. There's also contact on the third goal, but there it is more a case of the Badger attempting to play the puck, not just stumbling into the goalie. ;)

I think if someone sees Clark "running into" Mowat and "pushing" her off the post, I think their Maroon and Gold contact lenses need to be taken out and cleaned overnight. :D

Couple of us here also offered up another play where we could have definitely seen goalie interference go against the Badgers so I don't think it's that much of being a homer.

If I was wearing those, both the 2nd and 3rd goals are not only waved off but result in penalties on Badgers. :p

I'll give it to you, you're committed to the bit. Fortunately the refs didn't see it that way nor do I remember Mowat complaining about it, though I was was busy cheering the goals.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

MSU's games are free and HD. Free however comes at a price. Sometimes they blow the feed (1st game of the year) or put a ridiculously big PP clock in the screen. Announcers are students, and they do a respectable job for nonprofessionals.

Games are now at Verizon center so a big benefit to opposing teams and fans as far as facilities go. Downtown Hilton is connected by a walkway to the rink so you can stay indoors (or if you are on a wheel chair just roll across).

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Bummer Nurse and Clark are gone for the 4 Nations Cup this weekend. That disrupts the top 2 lines. I suppose they can plug Drake back into Nurse's spot, but what to do with Clark's spot?

I wonder where Friesen was Saturday, she was not behind the bench.

It's also interesting to look who is behind the bench during warm-ups, often times one sees potential recruits watching. If only I could identify them by taking a picture with my phone then find them in a data base.
