Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Exactly, despite having been given numerous opportunities by the hometown refs.

Gophers won it fair and square. The game seemed closer than a 3-goal game, but for most of the game, it was one of those games where scoring a goal just wasn't in the realm of possibility.

Desbiens is super fun to watch, though.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

That was a fantastic crowd, and I think thats the largest actual crowd Ive ever seen in LaBahn, including playoff games and several sellouts.

I dont think Id say it felt closer than a 3 goal game, actually a bit of the opposite. This seemed like a game where ARDs amazing play and the 2nd period penalty fest were the only reason it was as close as 3 goals.

I like her. She tells it like it is without bias...that one might expect.
I agree. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised how recent graduates in general are able to look at the game objectively. Once they have been away from the game for awhile, then you get the likes of Ellen Hughes and/or Weinberg who can't get over the fact that she was once a teammate of Katey Stone or wore the jersey of the UNH Wildcats. Ugh.

aka the equivalent of house league hockey players today...

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

The 1st period was all rodents, they outplayed UW badly, who came out flat as pancake. The 2nd and 3rd periods were more even, but by that time the damage was done. Overall the rodent had more quality chances, UW never really seriously challenged the rodent sieve. Her parents were a few rows behind us, they seemed like nice people listening to the conversation between periods.

The refs were bad as usual, both teams got screwed, though I think the rodents got screwed more than UW did.

I'm not convinced ARD antics getting way out of the net are a good thing.

The official attendance was 2,773, which is above the arena's official capacity, and a number of ticket sold that I did not think they'd allow. With general admission bleachers and standing room, it's hard to tell how many people were there relative to the number of "seats."

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

I didn't have the emotional energy to post anything last night. I was stunned at how Minnesota came out and completely outplayed Wisconsin in the first period. Even after the Badgers tied it up at 1, the Gophers responded so fast, Phil didn't even have the chance to do the "1..We want more!" chant. The late Gopher goal with .3 seconds in the first really took the energy out of the place.

I guess what I'm reading on the Minnesota threads that this was their best game of the year. I guess I'll take some consolation in that, because based on what I saw last night, the losing streak to Minnesota isn't ending any time soon. They looked faster, stronger and more motivated pretty much from the opening face-off until the final horn. Almost a repeat performance from Fill the Bowl last year.

I really want to believe that the Badgers will give a better effort today. Without naming names, there were a few Badger players that played one of their worst games I've seen
to the point I wondered if they were sick or injured. Though I will say that Nurse brought a ton of energy all game long.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the quick turnaround game (3:00) will affect each team. Wisconsin won't have long to stew on last night's game and needs to be ready to roll right from the start today.

I hope they took my suggestion and stayed out very late last night to celebrate the victory.

It looks like the box scores for both Friday and Saturday's games are showing 2,273 as the attendance - which is the same number as LaBahn's capacity. Friday night's crowd seemed a bit bigger than this afternoon, but both were very good crowds, and much better than several previous "sell outs." I noticed they were still accepting student cards and selling tickets when we arrived today about 10-15 before the game, so I wonder if they've made some changes to their policies from last year or if there were simply fewer people eating their season tickets this weekend.

Looks like they fixed the number from the Friday game recap, switching that '7' in the hundreds spot to a '2'. I didn't see anything about a sellout, so I'm guessing both games sold out from the walk-up crowd. The crowds more more in line with what we saw with the Harvard game last spring, rather than the first few times they sold out in the inaugural season.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Well, yesterday was a much better effort, the kind of even game I was hoping to see Friday. Too bad ARD got sniped late in the 3rd and that breakout in OT blew up there. I'm still more upset about the lousy Friday 1st period than I am the outcome of yesterday's game.

It is an alarming trend to get scored on late in the periods twice Friday and Saturday. That can't happen.

I loved the "We're going to win" sign.

That was a REALLY good game that the Badgers finished on the wrong end of, and it felt awful.

The defense played really well for the most part. Especially after the first intermission, they really locked in, and there were long stretches in which the gophers weren't getting any decent chances. The fact that they were playing so well made that tying goal sting so much more (as if giving up a late tying goal to Minnesota isn't enough).

I should have made that sign in all-caps, but the poster board wasn't as big as the signs used at UVA and then Baylor, where signs showing that simple declarative sentence have seen much bigger upsets and have gotten some ESPN time. (A couple of high school friends made the first one, then some other guys from our high school did it at Baylor.) I'm going to say that not doing all-caps was the difference maker. :D

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Also, I was glad to see Sarah Nurse play a little better offensively. I know the gophers are better than their typical opponents, but it was frustrating to see her stay really wide every time she brought the puck in on Friday. Her goal was on the power play, but she had a lot more rushes and scoring chances that looked more characteristic of Sarah Nurse. This is just a thought I had, but I think it'd be interesting to see her on the right wing, which would make it a little easier to cut into the middle before firing a shot.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Also - ARD's pads are spectacular. They're classic and unfussy, which is a bit like her.

By the way, Dan Hamann, the Gopher play by play guy, came down heavily in favor of Desbiens pads. Thought they were great.

I was impressed with Nurse vs. Minnesota...same as I was last season. First look at both Pankowski and Wellhausen. Both will be Border Battle pains in the rear for the balance of their careers...I'm convinced.

I don't mind being the only person with the correct opinion....:). I will admit I am not a retro fan in general.

After seeing 4 games now, I'm a little disappointed in Pankowski and Wellhausen. I thought they's jump out at me the way Nurse did last year. When Nurse had the puck last year (and this year), you knew it was her because she was flying down the ice and sniping the corners. Clark's ability was obvious against OSU, she was invisble Friday and played better yesterday. Pankowski was very strong along the boards yesterday. I suppose playing against the best team in the country will make a lot of great players look ordinary.

ARD's adventures out of the net are not something I expected nor do they make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Ooh, I think you're going to regret calling Pankowski ordinary. In the end, it's only October and they get such a short amount of time on the ice together before the season starts. It's still early, they lost a week with multiple players at Canada Fall Festival and they still have to gel together totally. When they do and the new girls are a bit more comfortable, I think those qualities will come out. Don't forget that last year the team had no depth, so that Nurse/McKibbon line was basically #2 immediately and of course you noticed them, because there wasn't anything else (hyperbole, obvs). The entire level of play this year is higher, so no one is going to stick out as much as they would have last year. I was surprised how often I realized I picked out Wellhausen yesterday.

I'm not sure I can put it into words well, but I'm still waiting for Nurse to get ... there ... It's like she's 90/95% of the way and I'm just hoping she figures out how to make it all click. She'll get the puck, streak the length of the ice, deke a defender and then kind of fail to deliver on all that promise once she's got the puck directly in front of the net. She sometimes seems like her feet are moving fast than her head and her hands and all of the sudden she's on the goal quicker than she realized and she doesn't actually get a decent look at the goal at all. It's all that potential that hasn't quite come to fruition - it was particularly evident in the nat'l semi-final against Minny, I thought.

I was hoping that time with Team Canada and a year of seasoning would help, but I've seen some of the same from her this season, though it's improved from last. I'm just hoping she find a way to make it all click sooner rather than later - she's got all the pieces and when they're all in sync, she'll be deadly.
