Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

My thoughts on Harvard are that they are a fast team, but they don't use that speed to dominate offensively like BC does. Instead, they counter quickly, and can convert mistakes rapidly into goals, similar to the goal UND scored on Friday. I do think that the Crimson offense is somewhat limited if you don't make those mistakes and hand them gifts. I really expect a 2-1, 1-0 type of game. Thus, it will wind up 6-5.

Interesting - thanks for the analysis. Post-season really highlights how little we see of teams from other conferences and never fails to frustrate me.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Future.....UW needs more firepower to deal with the rodents and it looks like help is on the way, adding 4 top end players and losing only 1. Thanks for the insight into the incoming players. This is awesome news, I am really jacked up about nexy year.

Adding some offense will certainly needed to try to keep pace, but the Gophers also have a nice incoming class, along with their returning olympians, so the road won't be getting any easier.
What's the prediction for attendance? Possbile sellout or will the higher prices keep some away?

Considering the last time these two teams met in this exact same situation, more than 5,000 packed the Kohl (The only time I've been in the 2nd deck for a womens game), it would be a huge disappointment if this was not a sellout.

Parking....I plan on parking in the lot off Regent street like I have been doing all year. It was been free to this point, even with the other events going on at the KC. It was even free for fill the bowl.

Did you park there for the Kato series? I drove down Regent on my way to Saturday's game, and saw they were charging for a lot there - although I've never parked there before. I usually park on West Wash or next to the depot when I'm going to events that charge for parking.

I would expect a sellout.

I found it interesting that we (barely) failed to crack 3,000 at the quarterfinal against Mercyhurst. I had estimated that there were over 3,500 there. I guess nobody ate their tickets!

What's unfortunate is that there won't be much of a student section besides the band, because of the reserved and more limited seating. Against Mercyhurst, even with prices higher than regular season games, we had about 5 rows of 115 full of students (or student equivalents).

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I think that Wisconsin's fitness/conditioning is better than most teams. It's a hypothesis. There's not much of a way to measure this, I just see that other teams fatigue and fade at the end of games in trying to keep up with their pace (meaning both speed of skating and speed of play). So it's a total "gut" thing. I think it's always a focus, but I think this year especially, this was a team that knew it had no superstar and knew it wasn't necessarily going to dazzle opponents as it had in year's past, but a thing they knew they could do is out-skate them. They might have gotten beaten by better players, but they were not going to get out-skated.

Who knows, I could be making that up. Just one of those things I took away after a bunch of games this season.

Their fitness might be better but how you can discount Harvard's conditioning after two double OT games back to back and then a third game following those games is beyond me. Especially when they were going shorter as the game went along (essentially six forwards after the middle of the third period). True, they were playing an opponent without offensive firepower but you still have to skate and make plays to win.

The Crimson definitely sagged on Saturday and it remains to be seen if they will be able to skate three lines on Saturday. Even in a normal season of full depth, the Crimson would be challenged going up against WCHA foes and matching lines. Our academic requirements and lack of athletic scholarships do not allow us to compete on the same level. That's just fact, not opinion.

Man... out east we're thrilled to break 300. I wish I could go to women's games with that kind of atmosphere.

Oh, and Harvard is panning on sending a band.
TTT pans their band, too.
I laughed out loud at work reading that -- yes, bring your ear plugs because Harvard's band is famous out here for being one of the absolute worst.

Saying I think Wisco's fitness is top notch automatically discounts Harvard's conditioning?

Yes we did, but we got there super early, the parking charging people were not there at that time. There was no sign saying event parking only when we arrived. I'll be getting there later this time, I may have to pay.

Actually the music is decent and the highland fling dancing is a world unto its own, but they try to be demeaning to the other team's athletes when they themselves probably couldn't stand up on double runners. Chanting "sieve" at an all-ECAC goalie is pretty ridiculous.

Wait.

The Harvard band has highland dancing?

Just asking mind you. Who and or what provides the pipes? And without pipes?

I agree that the "sieve chant" for an all league goalie is certainly inaccurate. But then again "SIEVE, SIEVE, SIEVE" fans aren't necessarily engaged in a rational evaluation of actual athletic abilities. They are just hockey fans having fun.

I am also a hockey fan just trying to have fun.

Harvard has no shot whatsoever. Period.
