Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I agree that I wish Friday's game had taken place on Saturday - the girls looked so flat and lackluster on Saturday and it was not a great game for that crowd of newbies to be introduced to.

Lastly, I'm still blown away by the individual play of Blayre. Girl clearly decided the team was not losing 2-1 on Friday and single-handedly willed that goal in. Saturday she also dove/belly-flopped across the crease to block a shot when Alex was on the ice and prevented from getting up. Turnbull took this series seriously and personally.

Shots-on-goal stats were actually better Saturday than they were on Friday (27-24 vs 33-23). So I think 'looked flat' was as much a matter of shots going in and then not going in as anything else. Maybe it was just Leveille having a better game, or whatever. For example, at one point Saturday, Turnbull found some space and give her pretty much the same across-the-crease shoot back to the post that worked on Friday, but on Saturday Leveille got a toe on it.

I thought UW played a better overall game Saturday, as stated the sog were more and and so were the faceoffs. The difference is the rodents scored when they had the chances off mistakes and UW didn't, thought the rodents made less mistakes. They are just the better team right now. UW needs more firepower to go along with the stingy D. Pankowski could have been the missing link....still lamenting.

I thought the atmosphere was very good, the fans were just waiting to explode. There were a few chances in the first that as they developed the crowd ramped up, but nothing came of them.

A funny sidenote....that annoying gal from Friday ended up being in the row behind us, just down to the left. We made a concerted effort to make sure we were louder and possibly a little annoying by using some of her phrases to cheer on UW. The funniest thing we did is when she cheered "Way to go Maryanne!"....We'd come back with "Where's Ginger?!"

Wow. No one's thought of that before.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

The Badgers played better on Friday. You can't just ignore 3-2 and 4-0. Even if you ignore all the scoring plays both nights, Wisconsin threatened to score much more on Friday than on Saturday. On Friday, there were a lot of plays where they just barely missed completing the goal. On Saturday, there were fewer of those plays, and they were further from scoring.

Shots on goal are great, but they're not magical. High volumes of shots really pay off when the shots that don't go in force rebounds and lead to more shots on goal immediately. The subsequent shots are more likely to be better scoring chances. Also, in a purely hypothetical situation, if 2 teams have identical "quality" in their scoring chances, if one team shoots better than the other, they outplayed the other team.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Yeah, I just can't agree. I was on the edge of my seat all of Friday and thought the Badgers were on the verge of pulling off the the upset the whole night. I never once had that feeling on Saturday.

The SOG stat/argument about shots going in really doesn't work for me because it felt like they couldn't buy a goal either night. Obviously they scored on Friday, but it also felt like they were centimeters from scoring about 8 more. That was a feeling over the course of both games and not specific to Saturday only. It was because Leveille was a wall.

Even Coach Johnson called them flat and talked about their sluggish skating and heavy legs and how the larger sheet just exasperated that.

The thing about Turnbull's goal wasn't the shot (which you correctly say she had a similar one on Saturday) - it was the coast-to-coast, beat the entire squad, I'm going to put the team on my shoulders aura around the thing. The puck going in the net was the least of that play.

LOL, was she dark haired and with another woman? If it's who I think it is, she goes to almost all the games at Ridder. BTW, every team seems to have at least one, at UMD earlier there was a woman like that, and when OSU came to Ridder there was a woman like that too.

My guess is she annoyed you because you were getting beat :D

When I saw the first series at Ridder, I thought Turnbull was the best Badger on the ice, although she didn't score.
Pankowski the difference? I guess we'll see next year, keep in mind two of her team mates on the U-18, (one of whom was selected as player of the tournament at world's which begs the question, why didn't she even get an invite to the Olympic tryouts?) are outscoring all but two of the Badgers as freshmen.

... and I wouldn't be disappointed by around 1,000 no shows, it gives you a shot at another record next year.

She had reddish blonde hair that was short. And no, I wasn't getting annoyed because of the outcome, UW had the lead in portions of the game, and I was plenty annoyed before the end.

I respectfully disagree on UW play Friday vs Sat. Friday's first period was probably the worst of the weekend. Friday's 2nd and 3rd were pretty strong. I thought Sat it was pretty even, though perhaps where I was sitting has skewed my opinion; behind the rodent bench vs behind the UW net 1st & 3rd periods. It's hard to observe the flow of the breakout from lower behind the net with the lack to depth perception there.

Marianne/Ginger....yeah it's not horribly original, but how often does one get the chance to use it? Over and over and over? Never.

If it's who I think it is, she is usually with the dark haired woman. The two are superfans. Who are indeed acquainted with the players as PPC members. I'll have to commend them for fine annoyance capabilities.

that's the other one, I never pay attention to which one is actually talking, too busy watching the game
I would have thought you'd invoke the professor's name, ...the professor and Maryanne, here on Gilligan's island!

Looks like the Badgers are probably going to get a full dose of Mankato over the next two weekends. Hopefully, the trend of beating the Mavericks (43-0-1 under Johnson if the UW notes are correct) continues. I'm guessing that Desbiens will get at least one start.

On an Olympic note, I'm curious if the team watched the gold medal game together or if the American and Canadian Badger players segregrated themselves.

Proud of how the former Badgers played (Duggan with a goal and Knight with an assist/Mikkelson winning gold) today, but a gut-wrenching game as a US fan. I was simply stunned when it was over.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Badgers get healthy against Mankato with a 5-1 win featuring two third period short-handed goals by Blayre Turnbull. She is having a breakout year.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

It looks like this matchup will repeat itself next week.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Wondering if the game actually had 0 paying spectators as was reported on the box score.

Saw that last night and thought maybe the count hadn't come in yet to be reported, even as small as it would be. I realize Mankato was having blizzard-like conditions, but I can't believe that they couldn't draw 1 person besides players/arena staff/family members.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I heard they were promoting an "Empty the Bowl Night"? :D

There was a minor league baseball team that essentially did that. They had a night dedicated to breaking the record for lowest attendance, and nobody entered the stadium until the middle of the fourth or fifth, whenever was the cutoff for counting attendance.

Bad blizzard and it was "Skate with Mavs" after the game. My guess is they probably let the people who showed up in free (or it is just a mistake). There are pictures of people on the ice skating after game so they at least had a few there.

There was video available (as I'm sure many of you know). A couple dozen on the side opposite the single camera; and two or three guys leaning out in front of the camera when the puck went into one of the two 'near side' corners :-)
