Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season
Man...I know this was out of the athletic department's control, but this was a disappointing Fill the Bowl. If you took last night's game and put it in front of tonight's crowd, even with all the newbies who don't have that strong of an attachment to the team, it would have been awesome, except for the loss. I remember the 2012 game being much more raucous than tonight. A very large portion of the student section consisted of complete newbies, so the regular student fans tried to make the best of it, doing our student-section things. But when the Badgers are shut out, there's only so much we can do. No Phil count and no post-goal sieve chant. Not the best advertisement for Wisconsin women's hockey.
Agree 100% on these comments. The athletic department did their job well as I didn't have any issues with seating, they switched up goal sides, the band was there, it was a cool national anthem and the crowd that was there was ready for action.
Unfortunately, it was a complete dud of a game. The perception of Wisconsin women's hockey would have much better served if it played out like Friday's game. Yeah, we lost, but we scored first (which would have gotten the crowd into the game) and tied it up in the third with a great individual play by Turnbull (which would have blown the lid off the place). Then the last part of the game would have at least have had some drama. As it was, the Badgers looked a step slow across the board all game long. After the second goal, you just kind of knew it wasn't going to happen.
Maybe it's because they had better teams (and more star-power), the last two Fill the Bowls did seem to have more energy, especially in 2011 against the Gophers. Again, it helped that they scored early and won the game. Also, with it being all general admission, the lower bowl completely filled up as did the most of the second deck. Last night most of the lower deck was pretty full, except for areas around the student section, but just seemed to have more spotty areas throughout.
The group I brought (which included several seeing hockey for the first time) did say they had a fun time, but I was frustrated that it should have been a more enjoyable experience, even if they didn't win.
