Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Is McKibbon healthy for this series? From what I read she got injured in last week's second game.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Good news! My Fill the Bowl "old person" ticket is for section 111 row R seat 11. My friend who has the same situation? His is for 111 row R seat 10. So now I have a PAIR of reserved tickets in the lower bowl. Free, of course.

Is the student section going to be in the 200's behind the rodent net? I have my 12 tickets filled and that's all the room I have in the 2 vehicles going down.

In my head the rodents are simply offensively deeper than UW, so I don't have any great expectations for winning this weekend unless Rigsby can post a shutout or allow 1 goal, though the men's sweep of the rodents has given me some hope that it can be done - the underdog beating the favorite. Winning or not, the games will be tightly contested and I will have fun either way dishing it out to the rodents. I just need to decide where we'll sit Friday, behind the rodent bench or by the students. It's also a little sad these are the last regular season games @ LB, there's only 2 for sure and possibly 3 left to attend then my dream season is over. :(

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

The Student Section will be in the same area that is is during the mens game (although it always seems like it would make more sense to flip it for the women). I can't remember if there have been enough students for the section to extend itself into the 200 level in past Fill the Bowls.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

just curious if the fans at the women's game is more civilized (maybe that's not the right word) than the men's game in Madison

in Mpls the difference is night & day

Actually, the very first season, the Gopher pep band got chewed out by Coach Halldorson for bringing some of the "full blown" men's hockey cheers to the women's games. She told them (okay, "us", as I was part of that :o ) to tone it down.

But I haven't been able to figure out two things about Badger fans...

-- Why "Let's Go Red" when your team wears mostly white uniforms at home?

-- Why "Sieve, Sieve, Sieve" the opposing goaltender when they make a good save?

EDIT: On a more-serious note, usually the "less-civilized" fans are students and, at least in Minneapolis, there is a distinct lack of a student section at women's hockey games or at least a much, MUCH smaller one than at the men's games.

Women's fans are more civilized. They may clap politely while the opposing team is intro'ed (I chant sieve during this time) and are generally more quiet. In fact I got chewed out for being too vocal the last home series. I was "giving Badger fans a bad name" I was told. I'm there to 100% support the red and white, and that doesn't mean sit there quietly and act like I'm at a PGA event.

As for chanting "Let's go Red"? The unis are half red and half white, I really have no idea. I think Red rolls off the tongue better than white. Though when an all red team is visiting, I'll switch to Badgers instead of Red. Sieving on a save? We as fans have to do our part to get into the goalie's head. We'll sieve them during warm-ups too. They may stop the puck, but they still are a sieve.

"Let's go red" is ingrained in the fans' and athletes' minds as a Wisconsin Badgers rallying cry. Consequently, whatever psychological boost an athlete gets from home fans will be triggered by this cheer. Also, "let's go Badgers [clap clap clapclapclap]" is more sing-songy, while "let's go red! [clap]" is more intense. It is because of that difference between 3 and 4 syllable chants that we chant "safety school" like "safe-ty schoo-ool [clap clap clapclapclap]."

For hockey, while they're in their white jerseys, there's plenty of red on the uniform anyway.

My class is about to start, but I have a ton of points on "sieve" chants. It will be answered.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Regarding chanting "sieve" after the goalie makes a save

1) Minnesota fans call the goalie a sieve before he even sees a shot on goal, let alone makes a save. Wisconsin fans do it too.

2) The law of perpetual sieve-itude says that any goaltender on the team opposing the Wisconsin Badgers is a sieve. This does not depend on how many goals he or she lets in.

3) If he or she made a save, that means we need to remind him or her to be more porous. It is their destiny to be a sieve, not some kind of airtight barrier. What better time to do this than when the goalie made himself/herself the center of attention by stopping the puck like a blind squirrel finds nuts?

4) If we only heckled/jeered opposing goalies after they are unsuccessful, that would be silly. You jeer the opponents in hopes that that may shake them a little bit mentally. The "better goalie" chant at the empty net at the very end of a weekend series doesn't do much for me.

5) Sometimes, a goalie barely makes a save, but the puck still goes behind them, and everyone goes "OOHHHH!" We especially like to call the goalie a sieve then! Or maybe they don't even touch the puck, but the shot was taken from such a ridiculous angle that the puck goes behind the goaltender through the crease. There was no goal, but it still demonstrates the holes in the goalie. I suppose this point isn't quite relevant to your "good save" specification.

Bonus: you guys occasionally freak out about it.

With regards to Fill the Bowl, I imagine the crowd will be tamer, as most people there don't follow the women's team, so their attachment is a little weaker. From my experience in 2012, the student section is the same. By "the same," I mean the student section at Fill the Bowl was the same as the student section at men's games. Also, people (from all over the crowd) were pretty ticked off when they disallowed what would have been the first goal because Tomčíková's helmet came off when she moved across the crease.

Overall, the answer to your question depends on how many Badgers get punched in the head without it being called, while the referee stares right at the players from 20 feet away.

According to a friend in the ticket office, the student section will be sections 112-118, lower level only.

even more perplexing is the fact that it is actually Cardinal, not red, and few Badger fans seem to know it

well I am looking forward to it, never been at a hockey game in Madison

the visiting Badger fans are polite at Ridder, as are the Gopher fans, I guess it's just a different crowd at the women's game

There are two student newspapers at Wisconsin - the Badger Herald, and the Daily Cardinal. The Cardinal has been around for something like 120 years.

Pretty sure most Wisconsin people are aware that it is the 'Cardinal and White'.

"Cardinal, not red" is like saying "square, not rectangle." It's not like maroon. "Cardinal" is straight-up red, and so is "scarlet." There may be specifications, but I'm pretty sure the reds used by UW have not all been within the same level of precision required to differentiate "cardinal" from most other plain reds.

There were some tongue-in-cheek "let's go cardinal" chants when OSU came to town to play the men.

"...for the cardinal and white are the symbols [cymbal crash] of right..."

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

If we're going to be talking about Wisconsin cheers that don't make sense, The one I laugh at most is the ever popular "That's Debatable!" when the Badgers are back at full strength.

But the PA guys says "Both teams at full strength", not "Wisconsin is at full strength", so it does make perfect sense.

It's because the announcer says "both teams at full strength." On the occasion that a Wisconsin penalty ends while an opponent's penalty is still going on, then they say, "Wisconsin at full strength," and we say "always were/was!" ("Always were" sounds more conventional, like "the Badgers were always at full strength." But "Always was" fits the singular, collective "Wisconsin." It doesn't happen enough for me to know conclusively.)

Wisconsin cheers that don't make sense,

So far, you guys have found none of them. They do exist, but it's because they use nonsense words, and you can't really use those to pretend we know nothing about hockey.

Edit: I'm glad you can distinctly hear "that's debateable" on TV, even if the difference between "both teams" and "Wisconsin" is inaudible.

I'm well aware that the PA announcer says "both teams" but it still doesn't really make sense, since it works equally well for the opposing team. If fans of both teams can say the same cheer at the same time, its not a cheer that makes sense in my book. Plus when the change in the situation that is "debatable" means that the Badgers now have an extra player back on the ice, it comes off as a sarcastic, backhanded compliment at best.

I do always enjoy the "cheese is gratable..." add on though.

edit: Badger games are on tv now? When did that happen? :)

Context! They know we mean it's the opponent who is never at full strength!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Hopefully I'll remember to do some nonsensical cheers for you on Friday. Maybe bring out the "Badger Max" chant, which worked very well at a men's game vs. Michigan!
