Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I'm pretty sure she's from somewhere in New England. If you saw Idaho by her name on the official UW roster, then perhaps her family moved there while she was in college (or right before). Something similar happened with Brendan Woods. He isn't actually from Fairfax, VA or Yorba Linda, CA (his listings for his freshman and sophomore years, respectively), but his father, Bob Woods, was an assistant coach with the Capitals, then the Ducks, so that's where the family was.

Born in California, grew up in Illinois, "moved" to bucolic academia in Hanover, NH while at Choate(which is in Connecticut). As I recall, the family moved when Miss Knight's brother started playing for a junior team in Idaho...and the family loves to ski.

Just an inquiry as to how Sowchuk's season is going? I met her at a HC U 18 camp in Ottawa a few years ago and she seemed like a very nice kid. At the time she had not decided where she was going to go to school. I see she is not putting up a lot of points, but her game the way I saw it was more of a shut down player???

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I would actually suggest the Coliseum. Seems like there is always scheduling conflicts that time of year anyway at Kohl and it really is too big. If truly bigger crowds were anticipated, Minnesota would offer up Mariucci (like it was in '06) instead of Ridder. It's extremely frustrating that LaBahn seems to be ruled out of both NCAAs and WCHAs because of size. I know the men's program was desperate for a practice facility (and probably didn't care at all about capacity) and wanted to move fast, but I'd like to know how much more time/money would have been needed to get LaBahn tournament-capable.

I could see the Coliseum working well. Would seem like a good spot for UW bid for a mens regional too, since the NCAA wants off-campus arenas for schools not named Notre Dame.

Looking at the numbers for the Women's finals, 3,000 to 4,000 is the typical attendance number, with 5,100 being the high and 1,500 being the low, so LaBahn really seems like it wouldn't work. The 4k originally planned would have been perfect. Just like Ridder, that would have been big enough to host the average final, be small enough to provide a good atmosphere, and would sell out if the home team made the final.

Interesting fact, the Top 2 finals ever for attendance were Duluth (03) and Minneapolis (06 at Mariucci), when the respective home teams made the final. The worst two finals were in Minneapolis (10 at Ridder) and in Duluth (12) when UMD won in Minneapolis, and Minnesota won in Duluth.

This past weekend (for the first time?) she was "demoted" from centering the second line to centering the fourth line, with Kaitlyn Harding being "promoted" (with the designation of "first line" vs "second line" for this team being very debatable).

I think it had as much (or more) to do with how well Harding has been playing than any particular dissatisfaction with Sowchuck, but no doubt she's disappointed by it.

And with the change resulting in (if not necessarily causing) a big offensive weekend, the change may stick.

On the plus side, she had a nice assist on Molly Doner's goal Sunday...

As one would expect, Badgers were right in the thick of things for team USA.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Wait...they gave "fighting majors?"
Don't read much into that. While the college game includes a mandatory game disqualification and 1-game suspension, the international game doesn't include this. It was more like the NHL where only the major penalty was issued.

(I read his comment to be "Wait, you can get a bachelor's degree in "fighting" at UW?!?" )

That was a great game last night. It's nice to see the ND twins be aggressive while not playing against WI.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

I sat down with Brittany Ammerman a few weeks ago and the product of that interview went live this morning over at B5Q.

I was really thinking of folks like you all when trying to come up with non game-recap content for the site, so I hope this is the sort of feature you were looking for. Look for another with Blayre Turnbull to run this Friday.

That's a fantastic article. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Brad Scholssman is saying he's got confirmation that Annie Pankowski is one of the final two cuts from the Olympic team.

Andy and I had both heard this rumor, but were unable to get confirmation. The cuts were supposedly made after the game in Grand Forks on Friday night.

She was probably an outside shot to make the team, but what heartbreak to be one of the last two off the team.

Is this the part where we start to analyze whether or not it was the right decision for her to delay her freshman year?

I don't think so myself. If you have a shot, any shot you gotta take it I think.

Does it pay to delay going to college for a year on a longshot to make the Olymipic team? Only she can answer that. I think it sets her up very well for the next Olympics. I just wonder what in the world is she going to hockey-wise for the next 3 months to keep her development rolling. She can't join any UW offseason workouts until the summer I assume.

I suppose she could enroll @ UW on her own dime to get a semester of coursework in and to get acclimated to the college life.

I thought I remember reading here somewhere that a player in these circumstances can at least practice with her college team with no impact on her future eligibility. ARM?
