Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Can someone explain the thinking behind the double jeopardy power play rule. Why would they think that a team should get two goals out of one penalty. I know it's a new rule, but how does this make sense?

I think a lot of it was as simple as wanting to see more goals.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I heard Derek Lee is in the doghouse? a poor play last night? or poor practice habits?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I don't know why Solovsfett, but Podge played great in Lee's normal slot, and the 4th line looked pretty darn good, too. Sort of like last year when he disappeared from the lineup, I didn't miss Lee much.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

They briefly mentioned it on the replay of the broadcast from last night that I saw. Combination of Eaves trying to shake things up/send a message about effort is what they made it sound like.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Just in case anyone is curious, or if anyone actually thinks that our attendance records are a big deal:

The Big Chill at The Big House isn't a huge threat to our streak of having the best average attendance in the nation. After 9 home games (including today), Michigan has had 165,389 fans at their games. They have 9 more home games on their schedule. Using Yost's capacity of 6,637, that means that they will have 59,733 fans at their final 9 home games (assuming sellouts). That gives them a total of 225,122 fans for the season, or an average of a little over 12,500 per game.

We're a pretty safe bet to have a higher per game average AND we have 4 more home dates than they do, so by both accounts, we're probably still going to lead the nation in attendance. Again.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

It is nice to wake up and see a Badger sweep!!! Also, that the 2nd and 3rd lines showed up on the box score and from previous comments that the 4th line played well. Nice shutout for Goody. Now we need to take care of these four non-conference games.

Side note: How is St. Cloud doing so poorly they really didn't lose that many people last year? I wish we played them in the first half before this team wakes up.

This should have happened a long time ago. I like Lee, but when you center the second scoring line, you can't play weak, and avoid the tough jobs in the corner and fighting for the puck. He is a talented player, but still needs to get stronger, or play stronger. Jefferson Dahl isn't any bigger than Lee and plays tough in the corners.

Turnbull had a nice weekend, I like that line going forward. He'll make dumb mistake and take a few bonehead penalties in the 2nd half, but he needs to be out there, he adds offense and grit.

Goody is #1 in the WCHA (during conference play) in save % at 0.930.

Great sweep, especially coming back from such a bad start on Friday. Goody is playing some of the best goal of his career, great to see.

I'm hoping that Eaves possibly experiments with having Z center Smith and Murray, just to see if Z is better at faceoffs then Smith. Being their Friday, I remember Smith winning exactly 2 facesoffs the whole evening. Offensively, you can't argue with what he is doing, but when we need to win a faceoff, and the other team puts out their best guy, Smith gets owned.

All worked out this weekend, but if that 1st line could win some more faceoffs, they would be even better then they have already started.

Well I hope he gets the msg then and works harder, and works toward building more strength.

Last night some of the unheralded guys played great as has been mentioned, Turnbull, Clark, Dahl

I'm not sure why Faust is sitting in favor of Springer...It appears there is still some hesitation on break-outs from our D-core and that's got to stop. the good teams will destroy UW if that continues

Gudmanson looked great last night.

...and it was nice to see some of the roundball kids show up for the game.

3-1 now on this stretch, hopefully on the way to at least 6-2, or REALLY optimistically 7-1

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I am a big Lee fan too (love those BCHL scoring machines), but he just seems invisible out there. He's made a few hits here and there in games I have seen, but he's largely MIA when he's on the ice. Hopefully Eaves doesn't go Goro or Bearson on him.

Great to see Goody bounce back with 2 great games after the UMD game.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Im thankful for the sweep, but they looked real sloppy on Saturday. There were lots of bad passes, turnovers and missed scoring opportunities. The score could have easily been 7-0 instead of 2-0.
It was nice to see Gudmanson on his game. He made a couple amazing stops on shots that I was certain were going to get past him.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

When Goody us having a good game he gets a shutout but when he let's 1-2 goals in he gets angery with himself and usually let's more in. All together the Badgers had a decent weekend and hopefully they get a couple more wins before the Duluth weekend.

Based on what? He allowed 2 goals in the first 2 minutes Friday and shut them down after that. I think you are trying to add 2+2 and are getting 6.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Just what I've seen, Goody is a good goalie let's see how he does the rest of the year.

I think Goody is starting to mature. UWisco is right, in the past, he would have lost it and been a mess after that. I think he's finally starting to learn how to put goals behind him and move on.

IMHO, he clearly turned the corner last year. Last year we all were wondering if he would be mentally tough enough to carry the team. That was a huge question. He answered the bell bigtime. You don't go 20-5-4 with 2.34 gaa average and a .913 save percentage by crawling in a hole once a couple get by you early on.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

A few Christmas break observations:

*Mersch is +13. Who would have predicted that at start the season? It speaks to Eaves saying he has an high hockey IQ.
*The first line is even in +/-. That's disappointing. Those guys have to be better defensively. That being said, they haven't scored a lot of even strength or s-h goals to help raise thier +/-.
*4 plays are averaging 1 pt a game or just under, which I think is also unexpected; though a near 30% pp will pump up those guys.

I just did the sueports record calculator and I ended up with UW 4th w/31 pts. It also dawned on me the top 6 get home ice, not top 5, so there's a little more of a fudge factor there for home ice.
