Smart move Joe. Here in NJ we live in a condo development (although the units are individual houses) and our board of directors refuse to allow anyone to have a generator. So it is problematic for us. In the Adirondacks we have a huge Cummins 35Kw generator that can run perhaps 4 houses. When the power has gone out there, we hardly know it as the generator kicks in and everything goes on as if nothing happened. Since it runs on Liquid Propane it can get expensive if run at full tilt fort a few days, but up there it is an absolute necessity since life can become brutal without power in those frigid temperatures.

About 3" on the ground so went out and shoveled after the Cornell - Clarkson women's game. Took 30 minutes to clean off the driveway. Snow is still coming down lickety split and the next run is after the Clarkson - Yale game (or during the 3rd period of the Ferris - Bemidji game). That should take another 4" or so off the driveway and that will leave me 6" to 12" to get rid of (Yes, Virginia 18" by 7am tomorrow) Saturday morning.

For all of you in this storm's path, stay safe and warm. Reports of this storm are giving me PTSD from last year. Glad to be out of its path.

Round 2 done. A pair of 2-2 ties. Meh.

6" on the ground based on my snow measuring device on the back patio. If the weatherman is correct, I will have 12" or so on the ground tomorrow AM. If the wind is blowing at 40 mph, I'm saying F it and waiting for Sunday.

This is the first storm in my life where I'm not touching a shovel. I've got a local kid on call and I'm just straight paying him to do the driveway on Sunday. There's no point even in cutting it down on Saturday since the winds will flatten it all out anyway.

Given my area's plowing record, I'll be lucky to get out on Monday at all.

I debated shelling out $800 for a snow blower, but how often would I use it? But at 60, how much longer do I want to shovel this thit?

This fall my girlfriend's dad bought a new snowblower, hasn't really used it yet. After the last 2 winters we've head here in SE Michigan, he considers it a worthwhile investment.

I'd go with the equation of your health plus convenience. When I lived in a house, shoveling was good exercise, although a PITA.

Like Brent says, you have to include the costs to your health. With my blood pressure there's a non-zero chance of me being the one who gets shoveled. That plus the likelihood of hurting myself in some other way(s) and it's literally no longer cost-effective.

And the type of snow you get. The wet/heavy stuff? We call that "heart-attack" snow for a reason. I'd rather shovel 12" of the light stuff than 3" of the heavy stuff.

Here on the Jersey shore impossible to measure snow depth due to severe drifting. Could not open front door as snow was 1/2 way up. No way we shovel this although it appears like the lighter stuff. At my age I only care if we lose power. It can snow 3 feet and i will just leave it. I have treated, and lost, too many guys who felt that shoveling was good exercise. Even if we could get one of the cars out, the roads are a mess and I am sure the morons are out in force thinking their 4 wheel drive makes them invincible. Just glad we have no place to go unless an emergency crops up. i would guess 12-14" here lbut for some reson not snowing at all right now, perhaps a dry spot in the storm.

Currently under a blizzard warning here in southern CT. Went from 3-5" predictions 24 hrs ago to full snowmageddon overnight. Steady snow falling now but accumulations only about an inch or two.

Weather Underground used to be my favorite site on the internet. Then GD TWC bought it and spray farted all over it. It's nowhere near as good as it used to be.
