Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

The English English name for Chicken Little you wanker. ;)

FYI, we won the war. It's Chicken Little now. ;)

And for here, less snow this winter, and not as cold overall, BUT, when it has decided to be cold, winter isn't messin' around. Two weekends in a row the high has been below zero for a couple days. And we're not even into the coldest part of our winter.

Edit: on Sunday, Antarctica was 29 degrees warmer than here. Yup.

To be fair, it is Summer down south ;)

Brent - my middle son is in Bemidji for this hockey season. He has never seen cold like they've been having and I think he never wants to see it again.

The last time I was up there...2008, for a UAH-BSU series. Whiteout on the way up on Friday....perfectly clear on Saturday, and whiteout on the way home on Sunday. Fri night? The wind...full sprint, from Perkins to the hotel...wind was actually pushing us back a bit. That Hoth-like.

Snow is one thing...bitter cold? JFC. That's a whole 'nother animal.

Everybody keeps telling him it's been a warm winter, too, I'd bet. (They'd be right.)

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Weather Underground currently predicts 17-20" for us from Friday through Saturday. Maybe worse is they are predicting heavy winds. We have exposed power lines that frequently drop.

The frustrating part is if I left on Friday for the games and returned Sunday I'd miss it all... but Dr. Mrs. wouldn't. :-(

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

So why did Weather Channel create/sponsor/buy Weather Underground? Do they need multiple weather related web sites?

Sounds like Snowmageddon is going to miss us, just north or Pittsburgh.

They were competitors. IIRC weather.com bought weatherunderground. I know a lot of underground fans hated that. maybe Weather.com is run by TWC?

Weather.com is the Weather Channel's site. Weather Underground was seen as have a great potential for revenue, so TWC bought it. I don't know how wunderground.com changed after the purchase, as I never visited the site before, but I'm willing to bet some more ads can be found there.

Wikipedia says IBM agreed to buy Weather Underground last October. Apparently WU came out of U Michigan (hence the name) and was basically just a cool front end delivering publicly available NWS content to users. I don't know whether there was any merit to it, but they and their users used to claim they made better use of data than Weather.com. It might just have been geek chest thumping. Anyway, they were the little guy, they got eaten in 2012, and now the combined service is apparently being eaten by someone even bigger.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

They (WU) have useful informative blogs. Also ------forum replies---- :) like here where one can read weather geeks talking about chit were they post radar links and other stuff they find.
The tropical areas are better defined and presented too. Extreme storm weather without the joe piscapo type overthetopness one finds watching WC.

But primarily just a better website
