Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Wikipedia says IBM agreed to buy Weather Underground last October. Apparently WU came out of U Michigan (hence the name) and was basically just a cool front end delivering publicly available NWS content to users. I don't know whether there was any merit to it, but they and their users used to claim they made better use of data than Weather.com. It might just have been geek chest thumping. Anyway, they were the little guy, they got eaten in 2012, and now the combined service is apparently being eaten by someone even bigger.

Don't forget weather.gov

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

So given the timing of the storm in DC, if one had a flight that was scheduled to land about 9:30pm Friday night, you think it could happen?

Which airport?? Best guess is no. And we don't handle snow well here. If you DO get here, you won't be able to move around much until probably Monday-Tuesday.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Not for me, our guest will be flying home that night. Wasn't sure when it was supposed to start there.

Don't let the guest trip on the icy steps!

UPDATE: It's snowing. Less than an inch and the roads are so slick that no traffic is moving in the District. I-95 South is closed by MD-200. And this is for < 1". What happens on the weekend when we get socked with 24" of the white stuff?

I'd put the odds at 1 in 50. At best. They're under a Blizzard Watch from Noon Friday until 6am Sunday. The worst of it will be between about 6pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.

Given what the meteorologist just said here, that should me you're in the clear!

Thanks Scott. The answer I was looking for. As it turns out, she changed her plans and won't be flying back to DC tomorrow night, she's going west instead. Now I need to worry she gets out this afternoon.

It begins. At 1:36 we saw our first flakes and we're already well over an inch. They nailed it, full credit to them. Current prediction is 8-12 today plus another 12-18 tomorrow.

I've used it for almost 15 years. It was so much easier to get information quickly (historical, forecast, etc.) from them than it was from The Weather Channel's website. Especially in the last few years when the Weather Channel was more interested in click-bait and reality TV crap instead of actual weather.

Not a big snow fan here but only because it is NJ and no one gives a **** about how they drive in this and put you in grave danger if you venture out. My major concern is losing all electrical power. We had lost everything for 2 weeks with Sandy and had some damage but the worst part was no power. With most lines around here all underground, i wish i understood why we can lose power rather easily and for relative long periods of time. BTW we are not expected to see anything until about 7PM today and they have us on the border line between 8-12 and 12-18 inches. I would settle for the 8" (and most definitely have wanted that in my younger days).

With two elderly in-laws in the basement apartment, we had to do something if the power went out for a long periods of time. Last year we bit the bullet and bought a stand by generator (7kw) that powers essential systems and some convenience items. We've used it 4 times since and expect it to kick in this weekend.
