Will Brockport Have To Change Its Name?

Re: Will Brockport Have To Change Its Name?

This is almost as ridiculous as Killington, VT trying to become a part of NH a few years back...

Almost. (at least Sweden, NY is within 10-minutes driving distance of Brockport, NY)

Well, the Village of Seneca Falls voted to dissolve. At least the town was also called Seneca Falls, because it would be a shame for such a famous and historic name to disappear.

The Village of Brockport is in the Town of Sweden, so if it dissolves, it becomes Sweden. There will no longer be a 10-minute drive.

Actually, 37 New York communities have decided that an incorporated village is not an efficient form of government (for them & usually due to small size) and have chosen to dissolve them. Pike, NY officially dissolved on Dec. 31, 2009.

Re: Will Brockport Have To Change Its Name?

Apparently it can be a lucrative route as well: in Plattsburgh's neck of the woods, the Village of Port Henry voted not to dissolve into the Town of Moriah on what appear to be entirely identity-motivated grounds, as municipal taxes could have dropped by up to a third. Of course, that article mentions state aid specially earmarked for dissolving muncipalities, so there's an air of the cash-grabby about the whole thing that seems to go beyond valid logistical concerns for such action (whatever those might be).

Re: Will Brockport Have To Change Its Name?

Somehow I would think that Century 21 is too small for that deal.

Over the past few years many villages have disolved their government and have become just a Hamlet in the Township. Port Henry, NY just tried, but it was voted down. Lake George disolved the village several years ago, which meant no more police department. That is why the Warren County Sherrifs Dept now patrols Lake George.

Brockport would more than likely remain a Hamlet with no government, as have many before them. There are many in Clinton county. Peru, AuSable Forks (which is also part of two townships covering two counties), Mooers, Mooers Forks, Ellenburg, and all of its namesakes just to name a few.

If Peru is a hamlet with no government, somebody wasted some of my time on the ballot this past October (okay, I never voted... registered as an absentee voter, but never received my absentee ballot  But there most certainly is a town government in Peru!)

And with the village with no government that straddles the county border and therefore sits in two towns... Keeseville fits that bill as well (and happens to sit in Ausable... not to be confused with Ausable Forks!)

That would be the Town of Peru, not the village. There is no village.

That sounds as confusing as Vermont, where we have Northfield Town, which includes Northfield Village, but there are two governments, but which have the same municipal manager, and Barre Town, which does not include Barre City, and Essex Junction, which is included in the Town of Essex, but is somewhat like Northfield Village and Northfield Town, and then there is St. Albans City and St. Albans Town, and for anybody who didn't grow up in Vermont, and has only lived here for 30 years it gets really confusing.

Then you go the other way in Jefferson County. You have the Village of Carthage in the Town of Wilna. The Village of West Carthage in the Town of Champion. Separated by the Black River with a 600 foot bridge. 2 mayors, 2 police departments, 2 fire departments, 2 village boards and a bunch of locals that are just starting to talk about combining services. The only common things are the post office and the School. The 2 villages are probably less than 4 square miles in area combined and a total population of prbably less than 7500!

Oh... yeah :o

I always loved how people talked about "the village", despite no signs or anything... sometimes you'll have a conversation in which two people are talking about "the village" and have COMPLETELY different definitions of where "the village" is. It's been non-existent for so long, nobody remembers where it is! :p

Re: Will Brockport Have To Change Its Name?

My all-time favorite from my title abstracting days is northern NY's Village of Keeseville: half in the Town of Ausable, half in the Town of Chesterfield. The really fun part: Ausable is in Clinton County, and Chesterfield is in Essex. And just for reference:

Town: the most common division of county governments, occupy all portions of a county that aren't incorporated as a city

Village: Incorporated independently but considered part of the town(s) it occupies. Can be confusing for any number of reasons. Clinton County actually provides a great example. The county's four incorporated villages:

  • Champlain: a village entirely within the Town of Champlain
  • Rouses Point: a village also entirely within the Town of Champlain but with a different name
  • Dannemora: a village within the Town of Dannemora, but also partially within the Town of Saranac
  • Keeseville: a mess (see above)

City: Incorporated municipalities that are not considered part of any town. For example, the City of Plattsburgh is completely surrounded by the Town of Plattsburgh, but aside from special agreements between their governments, they're seperate entities.

Real property is a blast!

NYS if full of confusing things, place-name-wise:

A few examples:

The Hamlet of Ausable Forks (meintioned above) is in two towns; One in Clinton County (Black Brook) and one in Essex County (Jay)

The Town of Beekman in Dutchess County and the Town of Beekmantown in Clinton Country.

Schuyler County (i.e. Watkins Glen) in the Southern Tier and Schuyler Falls in Clinton County AND Schuyler Heights in the Capital District.

The Town of Clinton in Clinton County (hamlet of Churbusco) and the Village of Clinton in the Mohawk Valley.

The Village of Saranac Lake, spread amongst three towns in two counties (Essex and Franklin) not to mention the Town of Saranac in nearby Clinton County.

and a hockey connection:

Hamilton College in the aforementioned Village of Clinton and Colgate University in the nearby Village of Hamilton.
