Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

Re: Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

That's my section. Well...not my section... Most opposing fans who sit in section one are down low at the face-off circle, so good luck seeing the other end of the ice! :p Oh, and prepare yourself for crazy_guy_in_section_1. He's...um...an acquired taste.

As for Grape Road/Main Street: Applebees, Max/Irma's, Houlihan's, TGIF's, Chili's, Famous Dave's (the best bread pudding ever), Panera, Olive Garden, Wings, Five Guys (also one just off campus), Logan's, Outback, Gino's E (you can't rush good Chicago-style pizza), Mancino's, IHOP, many fast food places and Krispy Kreme (my personal fave :D ). And, yes, I've dined at all of them. It's no secret that I am the anti-housewife.

We ate at Famous Dave's in our trip down a few years back. I couldn't eat it all. The next day we found a random Chinese restaurant and got takeout buffet by the ounce. It was also quite good. If only NMU could have gotten a point that weekend.

It was the best I could do through the ticket office at the time.

I believe for Sunday we'll be up towards the top of section 2 (again, where the ticket office stuck me).

Highly recommended: Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the University Park Mall!

Re: Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

Good game tonight. It's good to see Stewie turning things around and having a solid performance between the pipes. NMU needs to get more shots off if they want to get the sweep tomorrow. Overall, at worst we'll have a 2-2 record on this road trip, which is acceptable.

Re: Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

Section 2 is center ice. Nice.

Two rows off the glass wasn't bad, I've had a worse viewing angle at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Tried to look for some posters to meet in person... Look for the NMU Donnette jersey, NMU Lainsbury jersey, and either an NMU Oystrick or a Chicago Wolves Siddall jersey.

I was going to bring the Coburn Wolves jersey to make it easy to spot me, but I forgot it back at the apartment. :p

I think a bunch of the ND players must have forgotten THEIR sweaters and they just pulled a few guys from the crowd with replica jerseys. At least as I watched Northern flat outwork Notre Dame for what seemed like 3 out of every 4 shifts that's what it seemed like.

I watched almost the entire game on ND's website. I thought the exact oppoiste. It seemed like ND controlled the entire game and definitely the power plays/penalty kills.

Were we watching the same game?

Stewie stole this game for us. If ND gets that many shots on us again tomorrow we will be in trouble.

Geez BB take a compliment from an opposing fan you did the same thing to a Miami fan last week.

From the sounds of it by posters and the uscho article we played pretty good. It's nice to see three guys other than Olver get the goals. I'm also glad that Stewie come out of his funk with a win, and the the penalty kill do so well.

NMU breaks the trend of opening weekend losses. Yipee.

I have no idea what your background is in this game or the extent of your knowledge of the subtleties or the fundamental aspects of it, but I suspect if you thought Notre Dame controlled the entire game it's minimal.

The Irish rarely spent any time with an established forecheck and many of their shots came too rapidly off 2-on-2 or 2-on-3 or 3-on-3 rushes with little or no chance at rebounds, or particularly good looks at Stewart. Your goalie gave up quite a few of those, by the way, and had Notre Dame owned the attack zones they may have scored 6 or 7 goals. The third Northern goal was a study in laziness by Notre Dame, as there wasn't a single body put anywhere near a Northern skater and the goal scorer literally walked in on Mike Johnson and scored from within 4 feet of the net. Northern won battles in the corners and along the walls regularly, and helped out in the passing and shooting lanes quite effectively when Notre Dame was able to muster the puck to a shooter for a decent look. They spent over a minute in the third period with a 2-man advantage and managed one shot on goal over that time plus the remaining PP time on those particular penalties. Notre Dame played like a team coming off the long Alaska trip, while Northern looked more like a team playing at home and NOT coming off one of the long bus trips they make all the time. The shot disparity more clearly points out how Northern was better in most facets of the game than it does to any good play by Notre Dame. In fact total shots -- unless the numbers are ridiculously high or low -- rarely seem to be an effective indication of the quality of play between teams. For example, I may pay it some heed if my team outshoots your 40-15 and wins 6-1. If both teams play today as they played last night I will bet the rent Northern walks out of the Joyce with a sweep.

No, it wasn't the worst game I have seen Notre Dame play, and I did say they managed to play better than Northern on the occasional shift, but Northern was quite clearly the better team Saturday. Its almost as though you are so down on your own coach you no longer recognize when he actually DOES do a good job and has his team prepared to win. Northern did not "steal" the win last night. They earned the win.

Re: Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

Honestly, I was expecting more out of ND than what I saw last night, however, the 'Cats did a good job 5 on 5 and was fairly effective on the PK with only giving up 1 goal on 5 attempts (a lot better than last year). Our PP though was a different story. Except for the one PP goal (which was a pretty goal), most of our man-advantages looked horrid from what I saw. We barely had any chances of setting up in the zone. The 'Cats played with good energy and lots of physical play while not sitting in the box for half the night err... afternoon. Put up another performance like the one yesterday and we'll have a good weekend! Now, for the ND camera-person.. stop cutting away from the action to show people coming out of the box and keep up with the play!!! ugh.. frustrating

No. NMU clearly outworked Notre Dame, and controlled the tempo for a good portion of the game.

Notre Dame seemed to kick it up a notch after NMU took the 3-1 lead, and put the Cats on their heels a bit. Fortunately, NMU regained their composure with about 2 minutes left. The Irish couldn't pull the goalie until about a minute left in the game, and then NMU still wouldn't allow ND to get any decent shots.

I suspect that ND will come out much stronger tonight, and I'm sure the Cats will have their hands full. It should be an outstanding game.

The infamous second period melt-down.

The infamous second period melt-down.

Actually, I thought they played ok in the 2nd period. They went into the period with a 2-1 lead, and came out of the period with a 2-1 lead. Later in the third was where they seemed to have their trouble last night.

Re: Wildcats @ Fighting Irish Nov.14-15

Irish fan, you are right on in your assessment. There were also many at the game who thought that the shot count was way off, some people that I would consider pretty astute hockey observers. NMU worked their tails off for 60 minutes, didn't take a ton of bad penalties ( and the call on Gustafsson was weak) and got a big game from the keeper. Those are the things you must do to get a road win against a team with the talent level and depth of the Irish.

Saw you guys. I'm going to wear my Christian Hanson Leafs jersey tonight. Stop and say, "Hey," if you feel like it. Good thing about the Coburn jersey. I'd rip it off your back. :D

Yeah, by my count Stewert didn't face 38 shots. He made at least 2 saves on shots in open ice that were headed at least a foot wide, and there were one or two others "saves" he made on bouncing pucks that he covered for whistles I think. Notre Dame did take plenty of shots, enough to win if more were of the quality shot variety, but too many were hardly that. I did think the Northern total was just about right at 18. Did your folks think theirs was off, or the Notre Dame total? Notre Dame slowed them up enough to limit chances somewhat, or perhaps that's where the Wildcats' game is right now, but did give up enough good looks for Northern to capitalize. To me Northern looked quicker than I expected. The rep is usually that of a hard working team that positions itself wee, but I thought they showed some speed I didn't see as much of last year.
