Why the negativity towards more TV coverage?

Re: Why the negativity towards more TV coverage?

It's a small market. It's behind Minneapolis in market size and no one considers this a large market.

They're both in the top 20; if everything except the top 10 is "small" you've defined the word out of usefulness.

Like Denver??

The following cities are small markets Omaha, Grand Forks, Oxford, Duluth-Superior, Colorado Springs. Granted for the most part they are bigger than the rest of the WCHA cities but they are still small.

Carl Pohlad the former Twins owner is the yahoo who kept saying the Twin Cities are a small market. IMO, it was an excuse not to pay the players and place a decent team on the ball field. From Pohlads's POV the Wild would be considered a team playing in a small market and last I looked the Wild have been spending all the way up to the cap.

I don't think it's even fair to call Oxford a market, accounting for students on campus without versus, and 15% of the city being at a home game, you are probably looking at 7,500 potential viewers :)

Could Miami be considered in the Cincinnati market, since it's only approximately 1 hour away?

For television purposes, Oxford, OH is part of the Cincinnati market. But I doubt you'll find much interest for Miami athletics on Cincy TV stations, or much coverage in Cincy newspapers. Especially for hockey.

Oxford draws from Dayton and Cincinnati markets for networks - but our alumni base is spread out, and I believe Chicago and Columbus have a larger number of Miami grads than either of those.

I wouldn't hedge your bets on Miami drawing numbers in any Ohio market, it's a very niche sport at a medium sized school that generally only has a passionate following of any size among those who have graduated in the last 10 years. A majority of students who go through Oxford couldn't care less about hockey, makes me sad.

This. Miami basketball ends up on STO and hockey on ONN, while it is statewide, both productions leave much to be desired. Notably the extreme difficulty one has trying to make out lines on the ice via an ONN broadcast. I doubt either draw any sort of ratings, though I'm sure someone could look into that if they are so inclined. As far as news coverage, a couple of the networks do have a Miami hockey beat writer, but I'm pretty sure that their work is limited to an online capacity - maybe getting some airtime for the CCHA's or when Michigan is in town. I was never really one for local news so thats more speculation than anything else.
