Why the Internet Will Fail!!

Frankenstein's Monster
Why the Internet Will Fail!! (from 1995)

Saw this elsewhere and thought it was a hoot at just how wrong this guy was about the Internet. Hell, you go back 15 years ago and I'm sure you would all be pretty **** amazed back then at what you can do on the internet now that you couldn't do back then.:D :D

Heck, back then, Pluto was a planet as well. Things have changed. :(

Re: Why the Internet Will Fail!!

Frink: Well, sure, the Frinkiac-7 looks impressive [to student] Don't touch it! [back to class] But I predict that within 100 years computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings in Europe will own them.
Apu: Could it be used for dating?
Frink: Well, technically, yes, but the computer matches would be so perfect as to eliminate the thrill of romantic conquest. Ha-ho-ha-hey-hoo.

The article wasn't ALL wrong though. Some of my favorite quotes from the article that hit very close to home...

"the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data." ~Sounds exactly like the world's largest repository of misinformation... Wikipedia.

"The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats." ~See any Internet message board.

"Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee." ~Just look at all the ignorant teenagers addicted to MySpace, Twitter, and texting. These kids spend ten times as much time with their pretend friends online then they do in actual human contact... and they love it.

While I think Wikipedia and the internet of 1995 are somewhat different, I can't argue with the rest of that. :D

Meh ... it's just a fad. ;)

Remember, there's a world market for five computers. ;)

Pretty much sums up 90% of USCHO right there :D

How could anything that Al Gore started fail?

I suppose if they're getting the same amount of satisfaction out of it, then it's... real.

Certainly more real than the relationships we affect during, say, a work day.

Even granting that all you youngins have the emotional maturity of field mice, I don't think the interwebs are at fault.

Re: Why the Internet Will Fail!!

For socializing, I think the internet is a good aid for that. But it shouldn't substitute it. I mean, to use USCHO as an example, it helps people far away keep in touch easier than a phone does. Would any of us be able to stay in touch as often as we do without the 'net? We COULD, but it'd be a lot of work, and chances are, none of us have the time we would like to maintain the interaction with the people we know on a consistent basis.

Furthermore, look how much we've learned from others based around the country (and the world) because of this. Sure, you can watch documentaries on tv, and such, but what about the real everyday stuff?

Finally, because of the net, I know I can travel to other cities, and have a common bond established (college hockey) with some of the locals, and make it a more enjoyable trip, and I know the same can be said by many others here.

IMO, without the internet I never would have pushed myself to get season tickets and wouldn't have met any of the UML regulars. I also wouldn't have eventually realized certain things about myself that I need to correct and work on and its likely that I would have remained isolated in life. I suspect I would have gone just as far academically though I don't doubt the path would be different because you have to go through your professors.

I think in a lot of ways we are better for it just for the bevy of useful information and how that influences and improves what we do with our lives.

What 90% of people "learn" is everybody who disagrees with them is ignorant and/or evil.

They could have learned that anywhere. ;)

Re: Why the Internet Will Fail!!

When was USCHO board 1 launched?
I know the smartarse answer, which is 10 before the first (BU v. BC or MN v. the rest of the WCHA) insult was launched. ;)

What I've learned is that people are stupid. I thought it was just the local yokels, but apparently it's a worldwide phenomenon.

I think I read in a book by Scott Adams (Dilbert creator) that he thinks that humanity is stupid, and its the occasional deviant genius that is propelling us forward, and it's only gotten worse since the printing press, since these geniuses now leave notes for each other.

Hard to argue.
