Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

As far as the topic goes. I was hoping Notre Dame would have joined the Big 10.

Somehow, the NBC contract (and perhaps a desire to be an "eastern" school) is enough to stop them from entering the B1G. As it is, there's no room for them, but I guess the ACC and SEC are breaking the mold for going larger than 12 schools...

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

You said you moved from Chicago in 1988? I was in attendance for the majority of the games between 85 and 95, it was pretty choppy.

Sure you were...

Hawks attendance:
82-83 17099
83-84 16821
84-85 16927
85-86 17169
86-87 16853
87-88 16813
89-90 17546
90-91 17920
91-92 17509
92-93 17776
93-94 17771

Looks really choppy.

As always, don't let those pesky facts get in the way.

PS I went away to college. Doesn't mean that I ceased following the team or going to games. I still went home and went to Hawks games as we had a share of season tickets.

As always? Are you confusing me with someone? Or are you saying the Badgers have always had a loyal fanbase above all others? Because those are the years I attended Badger games (not Hawks games). I wasn't in attendance rooting for another team, I was rooting for my nephews who played on the team(s), and regradless of those numbers I know by experience the place had an echo. Im confused tho, you said you lived in Chicago at the time, a born and raised Hawks fan who also supports the Packers and Badgers? I can understand a mixed fandom if your kids/family are playing on all these multiple teams, is it that way for your family as well? We've had kids in the family play for almost every WCHA team and 1 CCHA team, making for a confused yet interesting reunion once or twice during the season (putting it mildly).

And im not sure about your numbers, those look like single game attendance numbers, if they're totals on the season, need I say more?

EDIT: And whats with the attitude? Is it because im Minnesotan? What is it with WI folk having so many issues with Minnesotans? Until it benifits them? Sheesh, grow up kid, i've rooted on your Badgers probably longer than you've known of the sport. And lets not forget where many on the roster come from, would you catch that same attitude with my nephews who played for them? Of course not.

To add, you fired back in defense of the Hawks attendance record then edited it back after the numbers were posted. No need to take this conversation so defensively. My point is/was that all fanbases have gone thru this, including the Gophers (who I an NOT defending, so do not confuse me with a Gopher fan).

You said that both the Hawks and Badgers of that era were at less than 50% attendance, which is so far from the truth as to be an outright lie. During the span of Badger seasons that you claimed to be in attendance for, they (we) led the nation in attendance up until Minnesota built the new Mooch.

I can't find the stats online, but our attendance was just fine.

My original point was that a Minnesota (Gophers, Vikings, Twins etc) sports fan shouldn't criticize other fan bases for poor attendance as they have their own issues. I also stated that they aren't the only ones who have these issues and included the fan bases of the teams that I root for.

Read further back. I said NS fans and Hawks fans have leaned on the same excuses "poor management" and does that make the Wild fan base more loyal considering their argument. I've never attended a sngle Hawks game so I dont speak from experience.

I've seen many Packer fans and Bears fans do the same thing. Whats the difference? There is none. Just as the CHL fans mock college hockey. And the Canadians mock the US. Its all the same, a measuring stick, something to pound their chest about and most of em have never even laced up and whats even more laughable is the kids generally dont care where they play. My nephew was drafted into a Southern Market team and he couldn't have been happier. Immediately the entire family was sporting that sweater (until he was sent packing). The kids in the family that played for the CCHA team (wont name him and tip my hand), was given the most chit of all :) Not the Badgers, Gophers or UND kids. It was the CCHA kid. He still catches flack for that decision (as a joke)

I hate the ridiculous notion any US Hockey fanbase is untouchable, the inevitable drought will always prove that theory wrong. Look at UND this year, maybe the numbers haven't shown it but anyone watching it on tv could see empty seats.

I remember the days you're talking about with the Vikes and Twins, and I agree, those fans shouldn't talk. But it does go both ways.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I think Minnesota had pressure to do it. I'm not convinced they will make much more than they are on hockey right now (how much will BTN revenue really go up with added hockey games? Without Gophers?), but are carried by other schools in the conference in football and basketball.

I would be very interested in seeing the before and after financials to see exactly how they shake out.
BTN revenue will not go up with the addition of BTHC. The idea that it might seems to be as persistent as the desire for an NCAA Hockey video game...

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

If the North Stars were still here then Mariucci wouldn't have any empty seats during games.

Notre Dame's alumni cling to the independent status like a lifeline. Joining any conference, and probably especially the Big Ten would cause them to lose donations at a huge rate. As long as they have a path to a championship game and their money is reasonably comparable, they're going to stay independent.

Recent national politics with the Catholic Church also makes me think that the CIC would actually be a detriment to Notre Dame willingness to join, unlike almost any other school in America.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I was one of the people who mentioned Northwestern, but I don't have any real reason to have mentioned them other than that I wouldn't think that they would have to build an arena. Maybe in time if the sport is successful, but there certainly already exist mid-size arenas in Chicago that would be appropriate in terms of size for college hockey.

My guess would be that the Big Ten will be six for a while, but one never knows.

Please don't forget the city of Milwaukee saved your beloved Packers.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I thought I saw a spread sheet showing only 3 schools were making money. 1 of them barely. I think Minnesota is getting the short end of the stick.

If I remember correctly Minnesota makes more money than the rest of the 6 hockey schools combined.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

How about that University in Minnesota that has 7 titles. They're not currently in any conference, and when you count UW and UMich, that would be three big winners in the BTHC.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Aren't members of the Wirtz family Northwestern alums? Pretty sure that covers billionaire alum and drunks (Liquor distributorship) in one.

If they haven't added D1 hockey with the popularity of the Hawks and interest in hockey in Chicagoland, it ain't happening.

You are correct but the Wirtz family make most of their money from real estate.
