Who here actually plays hockey?

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Never played organized, but a lot of pickup with everyone in numerous neighborhoods. There were three outdoor rinks not far from our house.

I was a goalie a lot, because i wasn't afraid of the puck. I would also be on defense quite a bit because I could skate backwards.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Double post:

The only thing I do that is related to hockey is goal judge every once and a while. I really ticked off the Elk River 14-15 girls team a year or two ago.

It was in, you silly broads.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Stopped playing as I am now on the ice 7 days a week coaching ... my wife thinks that is plenty of ice.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I've been trying to learn crossovers for 40 years.

No jokes.

Which might explain why you are always leaning left! :D :p

Yes. Very poorly but I did get to wear a Pro-Tec & Cooperalls in HS. You know you're jealous. :)

I've been playing for 50 years, and now play at least once a week with the "Wheezers and Geezers" here in SC.

I wore Cooperalls and a Northland "Stan Mikita" helmet back in the 80s.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Never played organized, but play pond hockey here and there...

I did try and get into refereeing when I moved back to Chicago a few weeks go, but missed out on the USA Hockey seminars in the area.... Maybe next year I'll play and ref...

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Sums me up, living in Virginia hockey was never that far up on the list. My friends and I decided to start an IM team sophomore year, and then realized that only half of us could skate. So I hauled myself to Lynah for open skate a bunch of times until I could get from point A to point B, not too prettily though. Then a few years of IM, but still not near nay level one could call "good".

edit: did not see that you moved away from VA. I recently moved here and can't really find any close hockey. Might have to suck it up and drive to roanoke to do stick and puck once a week. Unfortunately, once a week is barely maintenance let alone actually improving.

Here is a list of some folks from the UNH squad who played back in the day. Don't ask why I am posting this, mostly because I am bored and have no plans on Friday night :( ( hate moving to new places where I don't know anyone). One poster, Gozen, used to play steet hockey with us. He was friends with dave ( bigbadcow). He played juniors so it was unfair when he would dangle through three overweight frat boys. The only active poster who used to be on my team was unhrouge. I think we are going to reunite our line at the posters game in Detroit this April.

Long live Les Nordiques part DUEX!!!

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I played consistently from 3 until I started undergrad (Michigan cut IM hockey the year I started college), did drop-in a few times junior year (second time I did drop-in after not playing for two years involved Ian Cole, Eric Ehn, Teddy Ruth, and a few people from the US-under 18 team...not the best thing for one's confidence), and found a men's league team senior year. Now I'm in grad school in Minneapolis, and hopefully I can find somewhere to play drop-in/pond hockey (IM teams filled up before I got around to registering).

Yeah, really couldn't tell you anything, I never got around to trying to play at all when I was home so I couldn't really say what's in the area.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I'll challenge anyone in broomball!

Hockey...havent played since I was 6. I played with 9 and 10 yearolds and held my own speed wise. Never got to play a game. Got really sick the night before the first game and was hospitalized for 10 days with Juvenille Rheumatoid arthritis.

Never touched the ice again until last year when I tried to learn how to skate again. Did decently but fell my fair share as well. I've been doing a lot more roller blading instead.

Parents never let me play or get into hockey again after i missed that first season. Pretty disappointing now that I look back on it because I feel like I could have been decent given how much I watched the game and obssessed over it when I was young. Not guaranteeing any D-I scholarships but with how much I liked it I have a feeling I would have worked at it enough to make myself a semi decent player for my age. But ya never know...All i can now is wonder.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Played from 5 years of age through sophmore year, only house leagues though. Have thoughts about pulling the gear out every once in a while, but haven't had a chance to since I started school in NYC. I just referee during the winters now and picked up broomball a few years ago, luckilly there is a league in NYC to continue playing at too.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

Played the game since I was 5 years old...never really stopped. Attempted to walk on to UND in 2002...practice squad for a few weeks, then told not good enough. Played intramurals at UND and still play drop in every now and then at DU.

I will not be playing in the posters game this year; I'm saving up my talent for 2011 in Minny. :D

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I play, started seriously late in high school. I started playing goalie about four years ago, which I do mostly exclusively now. I also have my Level 3 Coaching Certification.

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I coach 2-3 nights a week, and play in a very casual, low-skill league once a week.

I think co-ed, no-check/no-slap should be mandatory for all screeching hockey parents.

I have coached and would prefer the full contact puck in the store version for some parents. :)

Re: Who here actually plays hockey?

I played High School hockey growing up in New England. RW and Center. Back then the school couldn't afford practice ice except once per week, so we practiced on a local pond.
After not making the Tech team as a walk-on I played intramural for 4 years and our team was pretty good. As I remember there were over 100 IM teams.

Once I started working for a living I played less and less. Especially because I lived in the south. Would like to start back up at some point, but can't really afford dental work. :)
