Who has seen the Hobbit?

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

Have you seen it? What's the verdict?

Critics have been panning it. So I figured perhaps they also panned LOTR which IMO was a great cimematic work. But the critics raved about each of the LOTR movies...which makes me wonder about the Hobbit.

I've been watching IMDB ratings over the last 24 hrs. It came out at 8.8 (top 10 ranking). But has slipped to 8.7, which is comparable to Two Towers...the worst of the three LOTR. Rotten Tom's has its critic rating at 65% (which is low) and audience at 81% (which is decent). A friend of mine called it horrible.

With all that my expectations are much lower than I expected a month ago. Will know much more later tonight when I go see it.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

Will see it tomorrow. Have not read the book in decades, so don't remember much about it. Any review from me will only be on its merits as a movie.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

I hope to see it Sunday night. Been tied up all weekend with youth hockey - and losing youth hockey at that.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

I saw it yesterday. I'm a lotr fan but this was not that great. I'd give it a C+. some good scenes especially the one at bag end, but it dragged, and if you like violence, it's great. Otherwise, well not so much. the NY times review though long, had it right.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

I saw it on Saturday, and I agree with manurespreader. Considering that the book is essentially a children's book, the film is quite violent. I haven't read the book in many years, and although there is violence in it, the gore was not included (similar to many fairy tales). It was not up to the standard set by the LotR trilogy.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

If you havent seen the movie...you may not want to read this and go see it yourself first...

Saw it. I agree with the assessment of medeocre. IMO it was weak due to several factors. It was slow and padded. There was not 2 hours and 40 mn worth of content there. And many times it slowed down. Its the same as was happened in Two Towers. Second, Hobbit content just isn't as solid as LOTR. Its fine...but its just lighter and less dramatic. Remember its very likely that if LOTR was never written that the Hobbit would have been an obscure novel that few would know of. Lastly, even though the Hobbit is in general lighter and more aimed at a kid market..this version pushed it much further in that direction. There was a bit too much slapstick humor. It was done sparingly and effectively in the LOTR. But here its continued to the point that its much of the movie. Also the action scenes were one after another of amazing high wire acts. So the movie went to far in terms of wackiness.

Having said all that the trilogy can still be salvaged. This could be a rough patch in a long wind up for two dramatic finale movies. The scenes of the dragon and esp Dol Guildor indicates that this is possible.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

What is it with the allure of adding slapstick humor to the 4th movie of what had been a fantastic trilogy? #jarjarbinksmustdie

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

I thought it was amazing, but did have a few reservations. Perhaps if we'd never had the LOTR, then this would feel more spectacular to some. Never felt padded to me, nor was I ever sitting there conscious of how long it had been, and wondering when the three hours would be up. Just immersed in the world I was seeing. The whole opening bit in Bag End was terrific, even down to using the same theme music as opened Fellowship. Dwarves at meal time was fun.

However, it did seem reminiscent of the earlier movies in too many places, and that gave me that sort of "been there, done that" feeling. I'll spoiler for those who haven't seen it yet:

Just the general layout of the plot: Leave Hobbiton, adventure a bit, get to Rivendell, then continue on. Attacked by nature going over the mountain pass, then the entire chase/battle scene in the goblin caverns. The shots of the group running over hillside and plain. Finally, Thorin pulling a Boromir towards the end of the movie. And just a bit too much of the pursued by orcs arc.

Again, it's been forever since I've read the book, and much of this may just be due to the source material. I just felt like it could have been depicted a bit differently, so as not to seem so derivative, or familiar.

However, the landscapes and scenery in general is just dreamy, You feel in the midst of something huge and spectacular.

And Gloin is Gimli's father, correct?

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

I felt like in the Hobbitt story, there was enough for one movie not three.

I also thought that, yes there were some great scenes and the cinematography was wonderful, but in the lotr, you had time between battle scenes where there was good character development, in Hobbitt it just went from one battle scene to the next one. I got tired of constant fighting. Plus a couple of the scenes later in the movie I found not to be believable even though I was immersed in the story and the fantasy world.

I'll go to the next one, but if it's more of the same, i'll skip the third.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

Thanks for the feedback all. I will see it next week hopefully. I am a huge fan of the LOTR movies and am looking forward to seeing the Hobbit. There has been a lot of talk about filming the movie at 48 frames/second instead of the standard 24 - did anyone notice any difference? Was it distracting?

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

Rough crowd. I liked it for the most part. Certainly a much better film than any of the Star Wars prequels. If you like action it was action packed. If you've longed since seeing Gollum depicted in the Lord of the Rings for the Riddle Game to be depicted on film you got it. If you wanted more background on Middle Earth, you got it.

It was a children's book after all. And, you thought it was too violent? Very cartoonish in that regard. Liberties were certainly taken but I think folks expectations were a might high. The source material for Lord of the Rings was never going to be topped whatever they did with The Hobbit. There was one reference that Gandalf makes to the Istari, and there was one line in that reference that was priceless. I'm not stating it yet as some who will appreciate it as much as I did will want to hear it first on film.

I didn't notice it. Was the standard version of the film, which is the one that I saw, at 48 frames/sec or only the 3D version?

BTW, is there anything to be gained by seeing the 3D version?

Only 3D is in 48fps, and even then relativley few theatres are screening it.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

As I watched, I kept thinking that I can't believe what I'm seeing.

Stunningly bad - both as an adaptation and as a movie.

Re: Who has seen the Hobbit?

Three movies is simply too much for the amount of story contained in The Hobbit. I was ok when they stretched it to two movies, but going to three is just milking the thing to death.
