Re: Which Conference Will Claim the National Collegiate Champion in 6 Months?

Re: Which Conference Will Claim the National Collegiate Champion in 6 Months?

How crazily unexpected would it be if Cornell was the team the ended the WCHA stranglehold on the National Collegiate Championship

Now what if you had taken that bet 3 years ago, when Cornell finished 4-23-2. Is there anything close to a rise like that in NCAA history in any other sport?

I think you mean 500-to-1 and 3-to-1.

Cornell is actually winning 63-37% on the uscho.com/women poll now. I'm not sure if this reflects fans who think Cornell actually will win, vs. the actual quantity of fan support behind Cornell.

Time for yet another Timmy. :o

St. Kate will try to repeat it next year. 0-22-2 a few years back and was runner up in MIAC tourney this year.

Re: Which Conference Will Claim the NCAA Champion in 6 Months?

This isn't a list of cinderellas (there are two two-time defending NCAA champion, and another two-time defending NCAA runner-up!!) Just a list of teams that improved a ton as the season went along.

2001-02 Brown -- started 6-6-1 (and 4-5-1), then went 19-1-1 en route to the NCAA final game, including the ECAC title and the win over No. 1 seed Minnesota in the Frozen Four.
In the end, this season wound up being kind of similar to 2001-2002. Both UMD and Cornell resembled Brown in some way. UMD in their record over the second half, Cornell in that they played themselves into contention late and wound up being that underdog that one didn't want to have to face. Plus both times you had a field with UMD, UM, the ECAC champ, and a school that is now a member of the CHA.

The other thing that reminds me of 2002 is the teams that were contenders for much of the year that were clearly headed in the wrong direction at the end of the season (Northeastern, Dartmouth, and even Niagara in 2002; Northeastern, UNH, Clarkson, and Minnesota this year.) I do think Cornell is better positioned for the long haul than Brown was, but then I probably liked those Bears' chances better following their run that year than I now remember.

Another Frozen Four observation -- they are much more exciting when Wisconsin is not included. The Badgers have been involved in 8 FF games, and only one of them has been closely contested. And although that was a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence, it wasn't exactly an all-time classic. This year, we had a set of 3-2 games, and I'd say that both of the Cornell games rank right up their in terms of great action at the NCAA FF. The UMD/UM game was off that pace in that it was a 2-goal game for close to half the contest. So going forward, let's agree that for the good of the game we should have fields where the team wearing red and white comes from Ithaca, not Madison.;)

The sacrifices you ask us to make! Oh, well, OK, for the good of the game, I'll go along... ;)

True, though this season Northeastern was never as highly ranked as those other 3 teams you mentioned. They were a borderline top 10 team all year.

Brown certainly did worse than expected in 02-03, but Brown didn't have an Olympian and then another centralized player coming back either.

I can't argue with that. But will future Wisconsin Frozen Four games be as boring now that Vetter has graduated, and their opponents might actually have some chance of scoring?

Help me out...does Wisconsin get back anyone else next year other than Knight (and of course Johnston) that would make their FF reappearance highly likely ? (not that she's not very significant!)

The correct answer is "no."

Re: Which Conference Will Claim the NCAA Champion in 6 Months?

Would this be more probable in a year like this one with the Olympians missing. That seems to level the playing field somewhat.

Having said that, both teams teams will have the services of two next year.
( Cornell is missing two (Jenner/Johnston) who they get back next year and UMD added Larocque late and will get Irwin back next year ).

I realize I'm picking nits here, but UMD gets back Larocque and five Olympians: Irwin, Holmlov, Winberg, Asserholt and Martin.

How dare you call these girls nits!

Don't you know how successful they are? Or how many Olympic medals they've won! Why is everyone so jealous of UMD that they can't resist persecuting their players? Are you insinuating they have lice, or perhaps nitwits who are academically challenged? ;)

P.S. I remember going out to games specifically just to watch Irwin play when she was 16 years old. My daughter idolized her. She was one of a kind even then. She's also a whole lot more disciplined now than she used to be.

She made an incredible turnaround from her freshman year to her sophomore year. She didn't have much to her game besides a whole lot of offense. Scoring goals is good, but she had no defense, no special teams skils and her training regimen was non-existent. She's become a much more complete player now (and I won't mention who she credits with that.) Can't wait to see her in a Bulldog uniform against this fall!

Yeah, I know. It just gave the whole thing a certain symmetry to include them, especially because there really weren't much for years in between where one could.

The correct answer is "no."
"Correct" just doesn't mean what it used to.
