When I win the lottery....

Re: When I win the lottery....

Cook and raise koalas. Duh.

Hmmm. Had not considered the koala angle.

Seriously, though - think of all the things in life that you enjoy doing, or the people you enjoy seeing. Now tell yourself you can never do that again, because you had to move to an island. Even if you just do it for a year or two, after things settle down - what have you missed in life during that time? Not worth it.

I'm going to start scouting out strangers for my big jackpot win. Can't give the ticket to anyone I know, because I don't want them to feel indebted to me. Plus, if something horrible happened, I wouldn't be able to handle the guilt (even if it happened to a stranger, that might be tough, too).

Hi jen, this is Clown. We've never met and I would like your money.

Re: When I win the lottery....

because there would be so many safety concerns, both for me and my family. Some whackjob is likely to come after you or someone you love if you win that much - people get crazy around money, and there are a LOT of desperate people..

I'm figuring for that kind of money, you could probably "buy" yourself a new identity complete with proper ID and credit cards. Then, only your family needs to know where you live and traveling to.

Re: When I win the lottery....

But then how could he tell us he's better than all of us who donated a few bucks to our local schools?

You already give money to your local schools. It's called school taxes. For those that live in a flat, school taxes are calculated in your rent cost. For those that are homeless, not only am I shocked you're able to post on here, but your money should probably be going to something else.

Re: When I win the lottery....

Or you look at that dollar, maybe five, and think of it as a small bit of entertainment expense and not an investment, because you know the likelihood of an actual payout being quite small. Your advice is suitable for those habitual players who do things like play the lottery instead of actually investing and saving for their retirement.

If you want to use games of chance as a vehicle of entertainment, I don't see much of a problem with that. There are better house advantage games you could play than a lottery, though. ;)

And some of them give free cocktails delivered by scantily clad wait staff.

Re: When I win the lottery....

A girl can dream. And should, from time to time.

Flaggy's a grandstander, not a dreamer. And she's a woman, not a girl. (Only because he's acting like a big bi**h in this thread.)

Re: When I win the lottery....

I had purchased five tickets to Saturday's drawing, but never checked my ticket stub to see if any of them were winners. Briefly glancing at it while making breakfast this morning, I see that I did hit the Powerball on one of the tickets, but I don't know if any of the other numbers matched. I'll have to see if I won just $4 or if I hit it big and got $8.

You can parlay that into some tickets for Wednesday's drawing! I used the $2 I won on a scratch card I got for Christmas to pay for my one ticket on Saturday. I was thinking "Hmmm, if this wins, do I tell the person who bought the ticket for me?" Because then that person could say they paid for the winning ticket. Such a tangled web.

On that advice link Kepler posted - the last piece of advice was to hire a therapist. Not a bad idea.

I'm thinking that, like, 14 people will split the jackpot this week.

Pick higher numbers. In the event of actually hitting, fewer people will have picked them (based on anniversaries, birthdays, etc).

Concur, especially if you hit the jackpot on a Saturday drawing. You'll have 24 hours Sunday where everything is closed, you can't obtain immediate help, and you can't breathe a word to anybody. Just you and a piece of paper that nobody can know is in your possession. I'd probably be balled up on the floor living up to my username for the next day or three as it sets in how much weight just landed on me.

That's why I won't see my tickets until Sunday morning at the earliest. All hail Saturday night pickup hockey!

What is the range for Powerball? I think they increased it a few months ago.

Here's the info from wiki, because the actual MN State Lottery and Powerball sites are blocked at work:

2015 format change[edit]

On October 4, 2015, the Powerball format changed again. The white-ball pool increased from 59 to 69 while the Powerball pool decreased from 35 to 26. As with the most recent changes to Mega Millions (in 2013), the double matrix was designed to create more overall winners (odds 1:24) but allow more rollovers (jackpot odds 1:292,201,338). The 4+1 prize is now $50,000; the 10x PowerPlay is available in drawings with a jackpot of under $150 million.[17] Three months later, the new format produced a $1.3 billion jackpot, double the previous record.

Re: When I win the lottery....

With a US population of 300 million the current power ball could pay everyone in the US 4+ million dollars. Poverty would be over.
