What to do in Madison, WI

Re: What to do in Madison, WI

And I the only person who mentally added "... when you're dead" to this thread title?

I don't know if they still hold sand volleyball tournaments (doubles) or grass volleyball tournaments (triples) at a park on the shore of Lake Randall (or someplace close); the last time I was there was in the early 1980s....you might be able to see some really good quality play depending upon whether one of the major tournaments they used to hold are still taking place during the time you are there....and it was always a fun place to hang out, soak up some sun and some suds, "bird" watch so to speak, ;) etc.

Haven't been to Parfrey's, but will need to check it out. I fish Manley and Otter right in that general area and Parfrey looks really cool. Believe that the creek holds trout.

I'm really not a trout fisher, but when we lived in LaCrosse I would fish Coon Creek once in a while. A beautiful, peaceful stream to walk back then--and a lot of fish, if that was what you were there for.

Yeah, I fished Coon Creek and some of the surrounding streams when I was in college at UWL. Beautiful part of the state.

Wanna go back and fish it again some day.

Doing Viroqua for a couple days this fall. Maybe I'll do Coon Valley next year.

No offense, but there are far better breweries than New Glarus. It wouldn't even make my top five or six. Ale Asylum, Karben4, One Barrel. All of the top of my head are better bets for good beer.

Oh yeah... if you like thin crust pizza from 900 degree ovens, don't miss Greenbush Bar. It's essentially downtown-ish and has our favorite local pizza and a kick-*** old time Italian restaurant hole in the wall atmosphere.

Get the house specialty pizza on thin crust - olive oil, gorgonzola, bacon and arugula. Even has the corn meal on the bottom of the crust.

drool...
This. Plus, they just MAY have some decent bourbon for sale. Maybe.

Karben4 is a decent taproom. There's always the Great Dane, too, which is similar to a Granite City/etc. There is a German beirhuis also, but cannot remember it for the life of me. IIRC, it has patron's steins hanging from the ceiling (you can rent a spot, from what I was told, so your stein is always there).

My places that I like to visit when I'm in town (albeit mostly for sentimental reasons):

- Paul's Pelmeni
- Paisan's
- Dotty Dumpling's Dowry

Probably the Essen Haus.

Re: What to do in Madison, WI

Dotty's has good food.

Also, when you go to One Barrel, ask them for a bottle of their chipotle mustard. It might be good enough to eat out of the bottle.

I find this statement very funny. :D

Bierhaus. What you wrote might be some freaky-dekie Dutsch thing, but it ain't German. :p

I don't speak German, and they spell their words really funny. ;)

Anyway, what Gurt said the name was, that sounds familiar.

Re: What to do in Madison, WI

Got back yesterday. Long week.

Went to a few breweries. Best stuff came from Ale Asylum, Karben 4, One Barrel (did not actually go to Karben or One Barrel). I had some other beers that were OK but I honestly don't remember them (only because they really didn't stand out to me). Did get a private tour of Ale Asylum because we knew an employee there. That was cool. Favorite thing all week was seeing Dr. Evermor's Forevertron. I took a good 80 pictures there but could have done more and wanted to stay longer. Wish my friend who is a metal sculptor would have been with me. Went to the Grumpy Troll over in Mt. Horeb. That wasn't bad. The zoo was good too and I did get dinner at a place called Merchant Madison one night. Good farm-to-table type place. I enjoyed that. Did a few museums. Chazen was my favorite. Spent a little time on State Street but not a ton. A few neat shops there. I did spend an afternoon hanging out in a little Irish Pub on State. For a while it was just me and the bartender. And then like 3 locals. And that was it. Nice, very chill atmosphere. Felt like a hometown bar rather than something the college kids would be at. While I was there the bartender was trying to come up with ideas to draw on the dry erase boards. I suggested Mr. Meeseeks from Rick and Morty. Showed her the episode and she loved it. Did a REALLY good job drawing them.

New Glarus was overrated in my opinion. Beer is just ok and I was not a fan of the atmosphere at the brewery (just felt so...it felt like someone who lives in a McMansion designed it). Was also disappointed in the "self-guided" tour. No information placards on anything. I mean I know how beer is made, but come on. At least give a little info about what we are seeing in each room. I also am not a fan of the fake hype they created by pulling back to just Wisconsin only. They may claim it was so they could put better focus on their beer but I'm not buying it.

I didn't get much of a chance to do much of the stuff I wanted to. My friend was being a pain and anytime I suggested that I just go out on my own it just made it worse. Not doing another vacation where I visit a friend who I haven't seen in a while, especially when it is someone who I wasn't super close with anyway.

Re: What to do in Madison, WI

The New Glarus/WI only thing was due to a Chicago distributor trying to jack up the fees years ago, so NG gave 'em the finger and decided to remain in-state only. I actually admire them for that. NG could EASILY distro to the midwest and be successful, and they don't. Pro-tip: their fruit beers are their best beers, IMO: Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart, and Serendipity.
